Throughout my life, reading and writing were a positive thing because of the support from the people around. I was never really the confident or extroverted type of person back in the day. This then caused me to be anxious when I read or be doubtful of what I wrote. I can still remember breaking balls of sweats and tensing up whenever I had to read something aloud in elementary. It was a pretty big social problem for me but I can also recall many times where I was laughing and having fun while doing something with reading or writing with my mother. Although there have been many things that affected me so far in my literary journey, my mother has been the most supportive and impactful person to me by reading short stories, going to the library, and giving me writing prompts. We made writing stories into a game. The rules were that I would have to write at least a full sheet of paper about a topic that was given by my mother and I would only have 30 minutes. We would laugh and just have a good time after making these. These timed writes were also a base that I keep building on today. The timed writes were the foundation for my literacy skills at school. It helped me become more open-minded and creative in my writings even in a short amount of time. Another fun thing my mother and I did was making mad libs together. Mad libs are a type of writing where you make up a story and leave out some words so others can fill them in. These were all activities that were helped make my base on my literacy journey. My relationship with writing has been much like roller coaster.Some experiences I had no control over. Other experiences were more influential. Ultimately it wasn’t until I started reading not because I had to read but because I wanted to, that's when my relationship reached change. I would have probably never cared about writing as I do today if it weren't for the critics in my family. When I was a child, my aunts and uncles always been in competition with who's child is better in school. I have always hated reading and writing because of the pressure to prove my family wrong was overwhelming for me. I had to prove them wrong and show them that I was capable of being "smart" which according to them was getting straight A's in all your classes.
My whole life I have never been the greatest at reading, but I have always tried to improve and push myself to do better. Reading and writing areis twoone of the needs of daily life. With that being said, you can conclude that I have always struggled. My problem was I always read too fast through the books or writing prompts, and I never remembered what I had read. But, with help I overcame my problems and started getting better at reading and writing.
My literacy journey began long before I had actually learned how to read or write. While recently going through baby pictures with my mother, we came across a photo of my father and I book shopping on the Logos boat, a boat that would come to my island every year that was filled with books for our purchasing. Upon looking at this picture, my mother was quite nostalgic and explained how they began my journey to literacy through experiences like this. My earliest memory of experiencing literature was as a small child. My parents would read bedtime stories to me each night before I went to bed. I vividly remember us sitting on the bed together with this big book of “365 bedtime stories for 365 days” and we read one story each day until we had
As a child, I have always been fond of reading books. My mother would read to me every single night before I went to bed and sometimes throughout the day. It was the most exciting time of the day when she would open the cabinet, with what seemed to be hundreds of feet tall, of endless books to choose from. When she read to me, I wanted nothing more than to read just like her. Together, we worked on reading every chance we had. Eventually I got better at reading alone and could not put a book down. Instead of playing outside with my brothers during the Summer, I would stay inside in complete silence and just read. I remember going to the library with my mom on Saturdays, and staying the entire day. I looked forward to it each and every week.
Everyone is supposed to have a story about how he/she became the reader and writer he/she is today. For me, my story is not just about how I became an exceptional reader and writer; it is about how I became the person I am. I do not have some dark childhood story filled with depressed memories. I had a delightful childhood and cannot complain about anything that I have been through. However, I feel as if I live a life much different from all the children I knew.
For the first six years of my life, I was a boy who savored going to school and seeing all of my friends. Then one day in first grade, during English class, that all changed thanks to a time were we had to read out loud. This day scared me for a while, and caused a fear in me that I wouldn’t let go of for about another eight years. Let me tell you first off, I was not at all the same person in first grade as I am today. For one thing, I was totally inconsiderate to any understanding of the reading system. I am writing about this event for the sole reason that it has changed the way I have live my life up to these recent years. Now that all of that is out of the way, I will continue with a story about a boy who overcame a reading and writing disability and turned it into motivation.
One of my favorite childhood books is by Dr. Seuss; it is called “Are You my Mother?” Even before I learned to read myself, this book was being read to me. Thinking back to the early years of my life, I always remember someone reading to me. Every night in my house I would have one, if not both, of my parents read to me and I always looked forward to that. That is where my passion for reading began.
I used to have to take these tests about all the books I would read in school and I would always ace them all. I knew that reading was something I liked because I was always very intrigued by it. Also in middle school I found my true writing voice. I remember taking a creative writing class in six grade and I was always the student who wrote more than what was expected for my writing assignments. I would write stories about things such as my friends and the experiences that I had in school. Sometimes I would even write my own plays and in my plays the characters would be people in family and people from school. I would always try to make the plot super interesting in my plays. One time I wrote a play about my brothers and me traveling to space and finding aliens. Overall, I really fell in love with literacy throughout my middle school years because I was able to read books more at an advance level and I also was able to write more intense stories. The earliest point I can recall in my literacy journey is the day that I learned to write. I sat in a small room adjacent to my mother as she spoke to an old friend. Struggling to situate a pencil in my hand, I listened intently to the son of my mother’s friend, Keegan. He stood, peering over my shoulder annunciating foreign sounds he referred to as letters. I tried my best to hold the pencil correctly and copy the sequence of lines that he wrote onto my piece of paper.
We focused or reading and writing in my house because my mom always thought it was most important in education. My family has influenced me to want to perfect my writing as well as my reading skills. The first book series I have read was the Flowers In The Attic series; it was given to me by my mom and it made me look forward to reading more. They have opened my mind and opened opportunities for me; I have been more interested in reading, and reading has helped me extend my vocabulary, which has influenced me as a writer.
As a voracious reader, she gave me the example I emulate to this day. Then, I couldn't understand how she could stand reading so much nonfiction; I preferred novels. Now I see that her reading provided the necessary tonic to life among the Orr tribe. She was also my English coach: Any time I had a paper to work on, I sketched out my draft and then she would show me how to make it coherent. All her efforts finally paid off when I received the writing award at school-she had finally taught her daughter to write!
My parents read to me every day when I came home from school. Two of my favorite books were the Baranstein Bears and Clifford. Television shows such as Sesame Street were a valuable supplement to my reading material. I had a tendency to pay more attention to Sesame Street than to my parents, but they did not discourage television; they were satisfied to see that I was learning.
Reading was never something I fussed about growing up. As a child, I loved genres of realistic fiction. I was hooked on The New Adventures of Mary Kate and Ashley, Goosebumps, The Amazing Days of Abby Hayes, Judy Moody, and especially, Zoobooks and Highlights magazines. My mother was always ready to help build my reading and writing skills. She took me to the library constantly to feed my passion for books and knowledge. I loved exploring the shelfs, organizing the books, and filling up my library cart. I tried keeping a diary in elementary school to keep track of my outings with my parents and grandparents to museums, zoos, movies, and libraries. There are many different types of events that shape who we are as writers and how we view literacy. Reading and writing is viewed as a chore among a number of people because of bad experiences they had when they were first starting to read and write. In my experience reading and writing has always been something to rejoice, not renounce, and that is because I have had positive memories about them.
George R.R. Martin once said, “A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies… The man who never reads lives only one.” For centuries, books have transformed readers into someone else and transported them to different worlds. In my fourteen years, I have fought dragons, saved the world, and survived World War II. I have become others who were anywhere from a toddler to an adult. I have gone to wizarding school and a summer camp for demigods all because of books. Something magical happens when I open bound pages of words and begin to read. Books inspire me because they each open up a new world of experiences and feelings that will last with me forever.
