My grandmother, Ellen “Eileen” Mary Mulleady was born December 8th 1934 in Cloonkeen, Co Roscommon, Ireland as the 3rd oldest of a family of 8 children. She lived with her 7 siblings, mother, father, and grandmother. Her father was a farmer and raised cattle, and her mother worked outside a lot, so her grandmother took care of her and her siblings most of the time. Her grandmother would hum tunes for them to dance to and make 7 loaves of bread a day. Eileen had to do daily chores, such as bringing in turf from the bog, picking vegetables, and milking the cows. Her family had a fire going at all the time and used it to cook on. Every Sunday they would cook a big fry before going to church on her family’s pony and trap. She started going to primary school when she was 4 years old and walked 2 miles everyday to get to school. At school she wrote lots of essays and practice handwriting on stone slates. For secondary school she went to a boarding school in Loughrea that was run by the nuns and while there she said she was very lonely but got through it and move to Dublin for 2 years to work as a telephone operator for the civil service. The trip took 6 days and she had lots of fun on the boat dancing and singing. She arrived to New York on Veterans Day and went to live with her Aunt and 7 cousins that she had never met before in Hartford, Connecticut. The day after she arrived in Connecticut her Aunt brought her into town and got a job at a traveler’s insurance company. Among one of the reasons she came to America was to follow her boyfriend who had settled in Boston. She visited him a few times but eventually broke up with him and started going to the dances at the Irish Club where she met Richard Maloney, my grandfather.
