A social structure is an established social pattern in a society that is emerged from and determined by the individuals within that society. Within a society, there is family as a social structure. A family is a group of people came together through marriage and is related by blood. When reflecting on family as a social structure, we benefits from being able to see how family as a social system establishes social identities, gender equality, gender roles, the interaction and connections between each individual of a family, and how it generates structure and cultural changes in its system and the society as a whole. Referring to my previous paragraph, if we were still living in Vietnam, our family would be considered as a traditional family. We are a nontraditional family since our family contrast with the traditional family image Coontz stated – each individual in my family share the responsibility of my parent’s roles, and my parents don’t really have their specific role responsibility. Coontz implies that the reasons why most families become nontraditional families mainly are due to the decreased in wages. She states in the article “the median income of men aged 25 to 34 fell by 26%” (Coontz 4). It is very reasonable to say that this is the main reason why our family drifted from the traditional image; because the wages decreased but the prices of necessities is presumed to remain the same (if not increased), then another person, or all, within that family would also have to work in order to maintain the family. Two years after living in the U.S., my father was laid off with little to nothing benefits; my mother had to start working full time. After my father was able to find a job, the pay amount was half of what he previously got. But because my mother was also working our family did not run into any big
