During my freshman year of high school, I was sitting in my Vocal I class when two upperclassmen came into the room wearing what I thought were nurses’ uniforms, or rather, scrubs. They introduced themselves as being with the Sparkman High School Medical Program. The students continued to tell us about a unique opportunity we could participate in during our later years of high school. For instance, they informed us that by taking the Health Foundations class and receiving an A in the class, we would be able to shadow nurses two days a week. Not only did I like the idea of experiencing something different, but I also liked the idea of being able to leave school two hours a day for two days a week. Therefore, I signed up for the class, met all the requirements, and gained myself the opportunity to intern with …show more content…
For two semesters of my junior year, I interned at Huntsville Hospital, shadowing nurses and technicians in many different areas of the hospital, including the E.R. and cardiovascular units. Although many of my classmates disliked going to the hospital, I found it to be the highlight of my week. Oddly enough, I liked giving obese, old patients bed baths, helping them to the bathroom, and cleaning their bed pans after they used them. But, don’t get me wrong. It wasn’t exactly what I loved doing, but I knew it was part of the job, and I always willingly did the dirty work. By the end of my junior year, I knew I loved the hospital environment and wanted to eventually work there; however, I just didn’t know in what capacity. Fortunately, during a slow day in my last semester of shadowing, a nurse asked me if I would like to see a surgery being performed. I quickly accepted the offer, and I got to witness a surgeon perform an eye lift procedure. This is when I realized the area of the hospital that interested me most, the operating room. More specifically, I wanted to be an

The patient, LL, is a twenty four year old female who was diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder five years ago. Around the ago of eighteen, LL started to experience many symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder. She had just started her freshman year at a local college and moved into the dorms with a random roommate. LL was constantly washing her hands and grossed out by the germs, so she came to realize she had a phobia of germs. She would begin sweating and having major anxiety when people went to shake her hand or her roommate would touch her food or any of her things. LL started skipping class and isolating herself in her room in order to avoid contact with other people. When her grades dramatically declined,
Look back: During my third week clinical experience, I did both computer charting and paper charting (for maternal assessment) with nursing care plan. Besides charting, I reported my significant findings of the mother verbally to the primary nurse.
My first experience, as a younger child, happened when I was decidedly an active troop member in girl’s scouts and at the time that was enough for me to feel helpful. However, in a turn of events, I quickly remember rushing to the hospital because of a vast gash that ran across my knee. After being pulled back to a room, crying, I remember being assured by the female nurse that I was going to be fine, and despite the short stabbing pain of the stitching procedure, I believed her. The fact the women’s remake about me being well were true, was perhaps the night I remember being swayed with thoughts and dreams of being a nurse. Ever since, It just so seems that the older I get, the more challenges I face, the more I desire
I was amazed at my first visit to Life University’s CCHOP. My physical was scheduled for one of the busiest times for the clinics, and there were a lot of people checking in. I was amazed because the two front desk workers were very friendly, and they worked fast to get everyone checked in even though it wasn’t but two of them. Once I got checked in, I met my intern. This was the first time I had any physical experience with Chiropractic; so, at first, I was nervous, but my intern made me feel welcomed and at ease. Everything my intern did to me, she explained it to me first and asked for my permission before she did anything. This was very shocking to me because I was not used to this type of special treatment. My intern completed my physical on the first visit, and I must say that I was
My wife & I have been together for 12 years and we were making plans for marriage when I met with a cycling accident in December 2013. I passed out from the accident and was admitted to hospital. Brain scans picked up a mass in my brain. The MRI confirmed the tumour and I was diagnosed with Trigeminal Schwannoma. As I was not experiencing any symptom, I could not accept my condition, I was in denial. Over the next nine months, I sought medical advice from various doctors; the consensus was to have surgery. It took me some time for me to accept that I had to take this step, through a combination of support from my fiancé and my parents, my new found faith in God, friends in church, and finding out more from others who had been through the journey such as Melissa Lim, founder of BTSS.
When I first decided to come to college for nursing after staying in university for three years, I had an argument with my parents because they were not happy with my decision. My parents just wanted me to finish rest of my degree and they thought that it did not make sense to go to college for diploma, and not complete the university degree. However, I just wanted to complete my nursing diploma in the same amount of time that I can finish my degree in the university because I always wanted to be a nurse.
Being a nurse practitioner will give me the ability to enhance my nursing skills of helping patients manage acute and chronic illnesses by providing quality patient care and increasing their quality of life. I will provide an array of education and preventative care as I find those to be crucial proactive measures to avoid acute illness. By the year 2030, the baby boomer population will be approaching their elderly years and with that comes several challenges to the health care system. The elderly population is expected to be twice what it is today and they are also expected to live longer thanks to medical advances and lifestyle changes. Community resources such as long-term care or home health care will be at a higher demand because of the
Original Research Topic: “Patient Experience” The main Argument The patient’s experience is an important factor in determining the quality of health care. Literature review has shown studies mentioned many factors and aspects that influence the patient experience and make it either positive or negative experience. Each experience has different evaluation than the others, depending on patient perception of different aspects and factors.
Clinical social workers in the community strive to enhance and maintain psychosocial functioning of individuals, families, and small groups. They also focus on prevention of psychosocial dysfunction or impairment, including emotional and mental disorders. The perspective of person-in-situation (psychosocial context) is fundamental to clinical social work practice (Austin, Barr, & Coombs, 2006).
Throughout my final ten weeks at my placement, I have grown and overcome so many obstacles. I have accomplished a wide range of skills since the beginning and have been improving on them as I gained experience. At my placement as a student nurse, I have gained a lot of confidence, skills, knowledge and experiences that have helped me act and work in a professional way. All the experiences I have had during the ten weeks of my student years have helped me in shaping me into a professional.
I believe placing student nurses in the clinical setting is vital in becoming competent nurses. Every experience the student experiences during their placement has an educative nature therefore, it is important for the students to take some time to reflect on these experiences. A specific situation that stood out to me from my clinical experience was that; I didn’t realize I had ignored the patient’s pain until I was later asked by the nurse if the patient was in any pain.
Same-sex marriage inequality is an issue that has been troubling American society since the birth of our country. More recently, the United States Supreme Court has tackled some frequently raised arguments that deal with same-sex marriage and our constitutional rights. In the case US vs. Windsor, the legal question: “Does the Defense of Marriage Act [...] deprive same-sex couples who are legally married under state laws of their Fifth Amendment rights to equal protection under federal law?” The Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) defines the term “marriage” under federal law as a “legal union between one man and one woman”. The ultimate ruling of the case US v. Windsor declared that Section Three of the Defense of Marriage Act was unconstitutional. The social and economic effects of the decision was not universal in effect, and unfortunately, since states retain power to allow or deny same-sex marriages, over nine-million Americans are still being stripped of their rights.
This week’s clinical experience has been unlike any other. I went onto the unit knowing that I needed to be more independent and found myself to be both scared and intimidated. However, having the patients I did made my first mother baby clinical an exciting experience. I was able to create connections between what I saw on the unit and the theory we learned in lectures. In addition, I was able to see tricks other nurses on the unit have when providing care, and where others went wrong. Being aware of this enabled me to see the areas of mother baby nursing I understood and areas I need to further research to become a better nurse.
In this clinical practicum, I had been learnt a lot of extensive knowledge, not only for the medical information, but also my personal growth from working in the hospital. In the past, because my defective practical experience, I only knew the abnormal readings in the vital sign, but not to consider further solution against the patient’s physical conditions. In the first few weeks of my clinical practicum, I just simply reported the abnormal findings to my teacher after took observations. However, as a nurse, we were meant to solve problems but not just report, I could not execute my role in ward at first. As a result, after doing some research and the accumulation of experience, I found out some basic actions contrary to different abnormal situations.
