I was amazed at my first visit to Life University’s CCHOP. My physical was scheduled for one of the busiest times for the clinics, and there were a lot of people checking in. I was amazed because the two front desk workers were very friendly, and they worked fast to get everyone checked in even though it wasn’t but two of them. Once I got checked in, I met my intern. This was the first time I had any physical experience with Chiropractic; so, at first, I was nervous, but my intern made me feel welcomed and at ease. Everything my intern did to me, she explained it to me first and asked for my permission before she did anything. There was really no check-in procedure, which was nice. My intern was already there; I like the fact that I didn’t have to wait for hours to be seen. My x-rays took about an hour to complete, but I understood that this was my intern’s first time doing x-rays, so I was patient with her. The doctor helping my intern with the x-rays was nice. Everyone made sure I was comfortable, and I was aware of everything that was happening. On my third visit, I had my first chiropractic adjustment. Check-in was smooth and fast, but I felt as though I waited a while for the doctor to come so that my intern could adjust me. When I first laid on the table, I was extremely nervous. My intern was telling me to relax; I thought I was relaxing, but I could feel my body resisting when my intern touched me. Eventually, I calmed down enough for my intern to start adjusting me. I initially thought that the adjustments would be painful; this was not the case. After I got adjusted, I didn’t feel any pain. I felt my body kind of release, and it felt good. Individuals who go through the process of becoming a chiropractor are dedicating their lives to improve others through their own hands. Giving a patient relief and satisfaction without harming their body with drugs that can have horrible side effects is a feeling that is unlike anything else. Facilitating an individual to heal and strengthening their life entirely is what chiropractors strive for and many accomplish that ambition. Additionally, studies and surveys have shown why students of chiropractic chose this profession. The top reasons were that they truly want to help people and heal them, the increase in financial status, and the ambition of having the title “Doctor.” (Wardwell 154). In 2002, going to a chiropractor was found to be the most commonly used program for therapy. Seventy-four percent, about 4 million, of people that had back pain went to a chiropractor to get treated. Even before starting medical school, when people asked what I wanted to specialize in after graduating, I told them internal medicine. During medical school I really enjoyed learning about the various disease, how to treat this, how to manage that. When people asked if I would ever consider surgery, I would reply with “never” and “it’s not for me”.
“Whoa-oa-oa! I feel good, I knew that I would now. I feel good….”. My “I feel good” ringtone woke me up from the depths of slumber during my first night call in internal medicine rotation. My supervising intern instructed me to come to the 4th floor for a patient in distress. Within moments, I scuttled through the hospital hallways and on to the stairs finally arriving short of breath at the nurses’ station. Mr. “Smith”, a 60 year old male with a past medical history of COPD was in respiratory distress. He had been bed bound for the past week due to his severe arthritis and had undergone a right knee replacement surgery the day before. During evening rounds earlier, he had no signs of distress. However, now at 2 AM in the morning, only hours later since rounds, he was minimally responsive. My intern and I quickly obtained the patient’s ABG measurements and subsequently initiated a trial of BIPAP. This resolved Mr. Smith’s respiratory distress and abnormal ABG values. To rule out serious causes of dyspnea, a stat chest x-ray and CT were obtained. Thankfully, both studies came back normal.
When I first decided to come to college for nursing after staying in university for three years, I had an argument with my parents because they were not happy with my decision. My parents just wanted me to finish rest of my degree and they thought that it did not make sense to go to college for diploma, and not complete the university degree. However, I just wanted to complete my nursing diploma in the same amount of time that I can finish my degree in the university because I always wanted to be a nurse.
It was an exciting opportunity to watch them set up the vac, and have an opportunity to interact with the doctors. I felt good during this situation, the doctors made me feel comfortable while in the room with them, that I was able to even move in and get a better look at the wound, as well as confident to ask questions. Throughout the situation I kind of felt bad for the patient, he was definitely in some pain during the dressing change, and the doctors didn’t really address it. However they did include the patient and did not treat the patient like he wasn’t even there. Overall I felt good about this learning experience, it was a great opportunity I was glad to be a part of especially to be able to watch the doctors work. I also enjoy watching dressing changes like these to compare them to what I have been taught in my clinical lab. While I had little knowledge about the vac dressing, I did watch to see if the doctors follow all of the sterile field and sterility rules I had been
After meeting with our patient twice, I believe we have set into place a relationship where the patient is very open to us about her health. This is helpful for my partner and I as an open and honest patient is beneficial as we assist them in their health. Goals for next semester include reducing our patient’s blood sugar as well as reducing our patient’s fibromyalgia pain. Our patient has expressed to us that her glucose is high but she is ok with the high number as long as she is feeling relatively healthy. We hope to give practical ways to reduce blood sugar throughout next semester so hopefully we can reduce that number by semester’s end. Our patient is going to see her physician soon, so we hope to get an update on the patient’s fibromyalgia

Mrs. Lambrecht’s overall opinion on the subject was positive. She thought that this was an excitingly unique idea and could prove to be highly beneficial. Her main concern was whether or not students would be interested in and actually use a chiropractor if one were to be provided. To find out this information, I recommend sending out a survey to students and faculty to determine if demand is present. When I was just 11 years old, I fractured my ankle playing basketball at the local park. The pain was white-hot and excruciating. I was reduced to a sobbing, blubbering, mess and unrecognizable upon my arrival the doctor’s office. After the diagnosis and subsequent surgery, I was placed on crutches and barred from participating in physical activity for at least six weeks. This was paramount to torture for my 11 year-old energetic and hyper-active self. Seeing my friends run around short of breath because of their own intoxicating laughter was bittersweet at best. One evening at the local park, I was just about ready to go insane until I surveyed my immediate surroundings and noticed a couple of kids my age sitting at a wooden table a couple of feet
Throughout my final ten weeks at my placement, I have grown and overcome so many obstacles. I have accomplished a wide range of skills since the beginning and have been improving on them as I gained experience. At my placement as a student nurse, I have gained a lot of confidence, skills, knowledge and experiences that have helped me act and work in a professional way. All the experiences I have had during the ten weeks of my student years have helped me in shaping me into a professional.
I believe placing student nurses in the clinical setting is vital in becoming competent nurses. Every experience the student experiences during their placement has an educative nature therefore, it is important for the students to take some time to reflect on these experiences. A specific situation that stood out to me from my clinical experience was that; I didn’t realize I had ignored the patient’s pain until I was later asked by the nurse if the patient was in any pain.
This week’s clinical experience has been unlike any other. I went onto the unit knowing that I needed to be more independent and found myself to be both scared and intimidated. However, having the patients I did made my first mother baby clinical an exciting experience. I was able to create connections between what I saw on the unit and the theory we learned in lectures. In addition, I was able to see tricks other nurses on the unit have when providing care, and where others went wrong. Being aware of this enabled me to see the areas of mother baby nursing I understood and areas I need to further research to become a better nurse.
I began taking advanced placement classes to challenge myself, to be the best I can be. Although it was difficult to maintain good grades, practice 10 hours a week for the swim team, and working a part-time job, I enjoyed the push and the outcome I received at the end. Due to wanting to be in the Medical field, I took Honors Anatomy and Physiology in order to learn more about the human body; prepare myself for the memorization and the use of note cards. All the information felt like my head was bottled up, I wanted to enjoy my high school years, because “they pass by so fast, make the best of them” my brother would constantly say to me but failed to mention if I really wanted to do what I loved, I had to let all that go and focus on school; which became my biggest responsibility. There were times where I just wanted to take the easy way out and drop the class, but I knew no good would come from that; instead I balanced out my schedule by prioritizing my time between school, practice and work.
I do not think that everyone fits in one hundred percent of the time. I think there are times that we all feel out of the loop, and there are times when we feel like we do not belong. Whether we like it or not, those moments can change us and shape us. I have had times like this in my life too. One of these instances that is still affecting me to this very day has become even more prevalent in the past few months. This experience I am having has changed the way I think, act, and feel about the world surrounding me.
