Songs help people in countless ways, whether it’s a favorite song that lifts their spirits or a song that motivates them and get them ready to go. Most people probably don’t realize that music can help people study and work harder. Tons of people adore it and others despise it, but most students would concur that music helps and people love listening to it. I have just started listening to music while I’m studying, and while a few songs distract me, others help me study and stay focused. I know several of my classmates bring headphones everyday so that they can tune out everything around them and push forward with their work. For many it works and it works well, but for others, I see them dancing and singing instead of working. I can see how there can be a love hate relationship with music. This makes people confident and willing to do their work. The best type of music for working is classical music with minimal lyrics as it provides the least amount of distractions. Classical music also helps with giving students higher quality sleep so they are rested for work and study. “...classical music, showing that listening benefits the brain, sleep patterns, the immune system and stress levels…” (Engel, 2014.) When students become calm and are well rested they perform their best. Listening to music helps students relax, sleep, and blocking out distractions. It also makes students want to learn. “...test with their liked music was ‘more pleasant’,...” (Doraiswamy, 2012.) With music in the background it makes studying less of a chore enhancing the fun. If studying and working is suddenly fun then new students will be open to it and actually study without complaining. This would make students have superior grades and be smarter.
