Music is one of the most popular ways of expression and has been for generations. It makes us want to dance, inspires, soothes, relaxes, and sometimes tells us a story. Music is something the whole world shares and has brought together different kinds of people. However, there has been a question on whether some music has affected society negatively and crossed the line with some of its lyrics, content, and the persona of the artists. Certain music has been boycotted and even banned in the U.S. Pro-censorship supporters say that music is something that can deeply affect our society especially children who should not have to be subjected to things like violence, sex, drugs, or hate. However, being that music is a form of expression, censoring it would just be violating everyone's right to freedom of speech and expression.
Many people say yes, that there should be censorship because lyrics from songs are telling our youth it is acceptable to participate in illegal actions such as murder, rape or drugs. These people believe that the lyrics actually drive people to become social deviants. In one case, the parents of John McCullom sued Ozzy Osbourne, because his song "Suicide Solution", "aided, advised and encouraged" McCullom's suicide (Nuzum 1).
Often times throughout history and in today’s world, music along with lyrics of songs and musical artists are blamed for deviant behavior in adolescents and teenagers. Some argue that subcultures are created because of artists and their music which leads to groups of young adults taking part in deviant behavior, while others argue the opposite; that the behavior leads the person to listen to the music. There is also concern about the effect that music videos have on the behaviors of the listeners of music throughout all genres. Although there is not much extended research on music and the effect it has on its listeners there is plenty of speculation, theories, and minor studies.
Music in this century is beginning to have more of an effect to people than ever before. It has evolved into calming and something that anyone can dance to. However, some music genres are becoming too provocative due to the lyrics being hateful to many things. But for some
It is surprising that music can have such an impact on American society today. The truth is that rap and hip-hop music not only affects teenagers and children that commit violence, but also affects those victims who suffer from the violent acts, Violence and Misogyny is a very serious problem that Americans face today and in order to create peace in our city streets, we must set guidelines to what our children should or should not hear.

There is a substantial amount of evidence that this is relatively true. According to research Hip-Hop’s poor messages and violent lyrics are damaging our culture beyond just a few ‘kids’ using poor grammar. In fact according to the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation, avid Hip-Hop listeners are more likely to use alcohol and drugs and behave in an aggressive manner. The results showed that almost 70 precent of students who listened to music regularly listen to rap or hip-hop. When this data was compared to the students’ answers on their aggressive behaviour the survey found that “substance use and aggressive behaviours among young people were significantly associated to certain genres of popular music,” With rap winning as the biggest influence on the youths abuse of alcohol and psychiatric
Many things in this world shape our attitudes; it can be the people we associate ourselves with, the television we watch and the music we hear. The music we listen to can have a great effect on how we come to grow as a person and how we treat others. Music has both positive and negative inflictions on people, it just depends on what music you like to listen to. For instance, according to the American Psychological Association, people who listened to violent lyrics had an increase in aggressive behavior. The article states that “repeated exposure to violent lyrics may contribute to the development of an aggressive personality and could indirectly create a more hostile social environment” INCLUDE SOME BOOK INFORMATION HERE
Music, a popular outlet amongst the teen community for exploring emotions and blowing off steam. Times have changed, and the way music and lyrics are perceived has developed in a violent fashion. According to new studies, that have occurred, violent music lyrics increase aggressive thoughts and feelings. I chose this topic because music is such an influential part of our lives that it often dictates the mood we seize to exist in. If violent thoughts occur, what can come of it?
Music is an essential part of life in America today. Millions of Americans listen to recordings from a plethora of artists every day. Since the advent of Rock N' Roll, politicians, law enforcement, and several independent organizations have tried to convince America that music causes negative social impacts on youth. Of the social impacts that music is blamed for, violence is the most shocking. The assumption by the afore mentioned groups, that music causes violence in American youth, is very debatable. I firmly believe that music doesn't at all cause violence. I on the other hand, argue that music reinforces certain feelings and incites emotion in the listener as it is intended to do. Music can't be blamed for acts of violence, because it isn't music or the music industry that shoots up a school. It is the children who are committing acts of violence. Music is meant to incite emotion and convey meaning not to cause violence.
Adolescents listen to music between three and four hours a day, and consider musicians their heroes. Teens are able to identify 20-30 music genres, the most controversial genres being heavy metal and rap. The question that this prompts is whether music lyrics affect teens negatively or not. Music lyrics that are about violence and drug use do not necessarily affect teenagers negatively, and it is more likely that they are choosing music to reflect their personality, and listening to different music genres is them searching for independence and an escape from everyday life, also teens are usually aware of the negative subjects in music.
We rely heavily on music to get us through a work out, cleaning, and we even rely on it when going through rough patches in our lives. One can say music is where we turn to too get in a certain mindset. For instance, boxers before a fight listens to music that will get them energized and pumped up. This doesn 't seem so bad, but unfortunately the most popular music today has the most negative effects on its audience. Specifically, Hip hop Music, today it is more provocative than ever and one can only assume it will only get worse from here. The lyrics to these harmful but catchy tunes are to blame for distorting the image of what success looks like in the mind of our youth. Not only are the lyrics poisonous but the music videos and graphics that go along with the songs are even more negatively influential. Furthermore, It is a combination of damaging lyrical messages and visual representations that are adversely contributing to the racial profiling of African Americans. The evolution of rap culture could be more dangerous than we realize. On the image to the left is 50 cent on a cover to his album. This is what is selling in today’s society. If this is not African Americans contributing to their own racial profile I don’t know what
In conclusion, music can affect human behavior negatively and positively. Not everyone reacts the same way to negative or positive music. In most cases, rap and hip hop can have a negative effect on anyone’s behavior because of the provocative lyrics it may entail. Many different messages, that aren’t always positive, can be presented in hip hop and rap. Moreover, Soundscape music can have very positive effects on human behavior. It is very relaxing and soothing. It is a good way to calm someone or bring back positive memories of nature. In any case everyone should monitor what they listen to because in the end it can affect your behavior. We can’t change the age we’re living in but we can change what we listen to.
