In Baltimore at Hopkins University, Karl Alexander and his fellow researchers conducted a 30 year research on first grade students to understand the contribution of one 's home life to their potential success. The results of the study were shocking. It was recorded that just 33 children out of nearly 800 moved from the low-income to high-income bracket. And a similarly small number born into low-income families had college degrees by the time they turned 28. In his book, The Long Shadow: Family Background, Disadvantaged Urban Youth, and the Transition to Adulthood Alexander goes on to say, White and black women from low-income households also had similar teen birth rates, but white women more often had a spouse or partner. We rely heavily on music to get us through a work out, cleaning, and we even rely on it when going through rough patches in our lives. One can say music is where we turn to too get in a certain mindset. For instance, boxers before a fight listens to music that will get them energized and pumped up. This doesn 't seem so bad, but unfortunately the most popular music today has the most negative effects on its audience. Specifically, Hip hop Music, today it is more provocative than ever and one can only assume it will only get worse from here. The lyrics to these harmful but catchy tunes are to blame for distorting the image of what success looks like in the mind of our youth. Not only are the lyrics poisonous but the music videos and graphics that go along with the songs are even more negatively influential. Furthermore, It is a combination of damaging lyrical messages and visual representations that are adversely contributing to the racial profiling of African Americans. The evolution of rap culture could be more dangerous than we realize. On the image to the left is 50 cent on a cover to his album. This is what is selling in today’s society.     It was the first time I had ever been to a party. I had just graduated high school, and did not have nor ever did have any sort of interest in going to a party. One of my fellow classmates had invited me to her party on the night of graduation, and I decided why not? I was told growing up that I would never have contact with most of my classmates after graduation ever again, so I wanted to have one last fun moment with the graduating class of 2013. I arrived at my classmate’s house around nine, and immediately was overwhelmed by the makeshift dance floor in the backyard, the loud, unfamiliar music, and the disco lights. Growing up, I had never been introduced to rap music, so I did not enjoy it as much as my fellow classmates did. It did not take long for the party to get started. Boys and girls alike started to make their way to the makeshift dance floor, immediately dancing on one another. I was absolutely taken away as girls that I had known for four years bent over and began to press their backsides up against boys, grinding on the boys as if it were an everyday activity as degrading music blared out of the speakers, as if they were not aware of the actual lyrics of the song. I was not sure what made me feel sicker to my stomach: the way the girls moved their behinds in ways that I found impossible, which I later learned was called ‘twerking’, or the misogynistic rap music that my classmates danced to.
