In an article entitled “Multiple Sclerosis: Why Exercise,” Connie Brichford brings out the importance of regular physical activity and exercise for people with multiple sclerosis (MS). Originally, exercise for people with MS was not recommended due to the risk of exacerbating their conditions, however recent studies have revealed that physical activity and exercise can help limit the effects of this devastating disease. Brichford also emphasized the importance to designing specialized exercise plans with the guidance of a physical therapist and doctor for each individual case. Secondly, it is a well-known belief that moderate exercise helps to ward off depression and improve mood. During periods of moderate exercise, endorphins are produced by an individual’s pituitary gland and central nervous system. Endorphins, when secreted into the body trigger a reduction in an individual’s perception of pain and produce positive feelings. Adults suffering from MS who exercise on a regular basis, as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, were found to have fewer depressive symptoms in a study of forty-three research articles which was published in The Journal of Sports Medicine and Physical Fitness in 2015. Thirdly, specially designed yoga programs have been found to enhance bladder control. Bowel and bladder control also improved in individuals with MS who participated in a 15-week regime of of aerobic exercises conducted by Dr. Jack Petajan. Additionally, individuals with MS benefit from weight-bearing exercise routines which strengthen bones. Bone strength is essential because they are susceptible to falls when experiencing balance issues. They also have a greater likelihood of developing osteoporosis

Both of these writings are on a terrible chronic disease affecting millions of people worldwide. What’s worse is that millions and millions more do not even know that this disease exists. I remember when I sprained my ankle while playing baseball, it was so bad that I needed crutches for two weeks and had to keep my foot wrapped for multiple weeks after. The incident took me out for the rest of the season, where my little league team got very close to going into the postseason but fell short. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis is better known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis was not brought to International or national attention until Famous New York Yankees baseball player, Lou Gehrig, was diagnosed with it in 1939. Jon Stone, the writer and creator of Sesame Street, was also diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis is very deadly and it physically handicaps a person as it progresses. There are two types of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Sporadic and Familial. Sporadic is the most common cause in some cases and Familial is inherited, which is rare. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis is one of the most aggressive muscular atrophy disorders, it has many signs and symptoms, and it can be treated but cannot be cured.

Multiple sclerosis is best described as a pathological “inflammatory-mediated demyelinating disease of the human central nervous system,” and affects more than 2.5 million people globally (Trapp & Nave, 2008).
According to National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system (CNS) that disrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. The central nervous system (CNS) comprises of the brain and the spinal cord. CNS is coated and protected by myelin sheath that is made of fatty tissues (Slomski, 2005). The inflammation and damage of the myelin sheath causing it to form a scar (sclerosis). This results in a number of physical and mental symptoms, including weakness, loss of coordination, and loss of speech and vision. The way the disease affect people is always different; some people experience only a single attack and recover quickly, while others condition degenerate over time (Wexler, 2013). Hence, the diagnosis of MS is mostly done by eliminating the symptoms of other diseases. Multiple sclerosis (MS) affects both men and women, but generally, it is more common in women more than men. The disease is most usually diagnosed between ages 20 and 40, however, it can occur at any age. Someone with a family history of the disease is more likely to suffer from it. Although MS is not

Developing a greater understanding of the effect of exercise on individuals with MS requires attention to two specific gaps. First, there is limited knowledge on what type of exercise (balance, aerobic or strength training) is most effective. Because exercise is beneficial to improve fatigue and quality of life, it is vital to examine which mode of exercise offers the best results (Motl, 2008). Second, there is limited knowledge on the effectiveness of exercise programs that can be completed at a non-clinical setting (i.e. community or recreation center). It is important to examine non-clinical settings because of realistic application for MS patients.
Patients are presented with Multiple Sclerosis in various different forms and experience symptoms to different degrees – mild, moderate or severe. While some patients’ predominately experience emotional or cognitive dysfunction, others may be presented with loss of muscle control, and/or visual, balance and sensation symptoms. Other symptoms include fatigue, bladder and bowel problems.
Physical and occupational therapy may also help. Multiple sclerosis is not a fatal disease. Most people with MS have a normal or near-normal life span and usually die from the same conditions that affect general population (heart disease, cancer). Multiple Sclerosis symptoms can negatively affect the quality of life. Suicide rates among patients with multiple sclerosis are higher than average. The majority of patients with MS do not become severely disabled. Women tend to have a better outlook than men. MS has long been known, yet diagnosis remains difficult due to the complexity of the disease and its wide array of signs and symptoms. Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a complicated chronic deteriorating disease that has an effect on the central nervous system (CNS). This disease causes destruction of the myelin around the nerve fibers. “The exact etiology of Multiple Sclerosis is unknown; however, it is thought to be an immune mediated disease. MS is characterized by CNS inflammation, demyelination, and axonal loss” (Compston & Coles, 2008). Typically, it is described by early relapses and remissions of neurological signs of the CNS. This is known as relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS). MS can be identified by a variety of known risk factors. Multiple Sclerosis can be brought on by a mixture of inherited and environmental risk factors such as smoking or an exposure to a virus like Epstein Barr. The inflammatory process has an interesting role on the central nervous system.
