Ana-Mauríne Lara’s Erzulie’s Skirt positions the female body as the scene where lives are interconnected across history and as a dissertation of the human condition. Her protagonists, Micaela and Miriam, tell a story of love, struggle, and survival that echoes the historical significance of slavery and the Caribbean middle passage across time and space. Divided into several sections based on time and location, one particular period in Lara’s novel connects Micaela and Miriam’s experiences most closely with slavery as a whole. After a voyage across the Mona Strait as an attempt to escape from the conditions in the Dominican Republic, they find themselves captured, trapped in a brothel, and forced into prostitution. Many parallels can be drawn to interpret Lara’s use of the brothel as a metaphor for the slave ships used to travel across the original Middle Passage, including the comparable use of people as commodities, the specific imagery and language Lara uses, the historical narrative presented at the beginning of each section, and the larger themes in which identities were simultaneously stripped by oppression and also preserved within the context of community and spirituality.

This introductory year in English has resulted in various mindsets; some may interpret the curriculum as demanding and highly unpleasant while others relished this year as optimal. Based on my experiences in Mrs. Cefalu’s class, this has been the crème de la crème of the entire English curriculum. Essentially, my freshman year has vastly outcompeted all my former English classes by interminable miles. I would foremost endeavor to greatly thank Mrs. Cefalu for innovating an unorthodox, amusing experience for me and every soul fortunate to experience this class. At the beginning of each unit a vocabulary list is given out, and as the vocabulary is gone over within the lessons emphasis will be placed as to where the students may find the terms on the vocabulary list.

Mrs Brauckmann syllabus and rules are highly recommended to be followed and she has three main important aspects for her class , such as attendance , being on time and late work. Students are to attend school every day and to be participating with the class. When you are absent the student parents must clear the absence with the attendance director.She has more aspects as to not turn in late work. Late work is to only be accepted if absence is extended but you are to come to school that morning to get make up work , you have them remaining three days for make up work to be completed and turned in.Our third aspect is making up quizzes and when a student is absent it is their responsibility to come to school on that remainder day. [The students may not be familiar with some words like buoy and parasailing in the exploratory activity on day one. To support these students, a picture of these words will be provided for the students so they can understand where to place them on the number line. Also on the first day, the second part of the exploratory activity tells the students to write an equation to find the distance between two people in the activity. The provide support for the students who do not know what it means to write an equation, I will ask the students what they think an equation is. I will then tell them than an equation is something with an equal sign in it. The main support for learning on the second day of the segment is for the students to notice the position
