Born to a German dad and Danish mom, nobody had predicted that this shoemaker’s son would be a star, who will be loved by millions worldwide! Horst was born in Berlin, Germany, in the year 1933. Soon after his birth, little Horst was sent to a foster home in Czecheslovakia due to the havoc created by World War II. Fortune smiled on him and he was fortunate enough to escape from the foster home and return back to his own home. Horst was never really into academics. He left school the moment he realized that he was made for Acting. Slowly after polishing his acting skills, Horst moved from East Berlin to West Berlin. He kick started his career by taking part in theatre plays and dramas.

Yes, both personally and professionally, lady luck was smiling at him. He found his life partner Myriam Bru. After spreading magic in German movies, Horst now wanted to pursue foreign films. As expected, he rose to new heights in that too.
His first non-German film was Tiger Bay in the year 1959, which was a British film. Tiger Bay was about a girl who witnesses a seaman named Korchinsky , which was played by Buchholz who murders his girlfriend. The film won praise in both Germany and Britain, but it was Buchholz' next foreign film that secured his name in the classic films. This film was the epic western The Magnificent Seven (1960) directed by John Sturges.
His contribution to cinema and his work was recognized by Oscars too. His film fanny added a new feather to the actor’s hat. Fanny got nominated for 5 categories in the Oscars.
It is rightly said that a man cannot always taste success. It is actually the failures he faces that makes him appreciate his good times. Horst too, had failures, though not in his early days, but yes, had failures in the 1960’s.

On the other side, he has received other awards not so satisfying like the Golden Raspberry Award of the Worst Actor, in movies like “Happy Gilmore” and “Jack and Jill”. Because of that last film, he received even the award for Worst Actress, because, like I said before, he did the paper of a twin sister as well.
