In order to understand an organization’s reputation and representation, one can look towards its mission statement. A mission statement communicates the organization’s purpose, identifies organizational values, and sets goals. Mission statements tend to be expressed to both internal and external stakeholders, and are the corporate version of the organization’s ideals (Fairhurst, Jordan, Neuwirth, 1997). An organization can strategically manage their communication and can produce a mission statement that shows how the company wants to be represented. There are sections on the website dedicated to Miss America Scholarship Awards and Donations. These sections bring you to separate pages where you can actually see what women have won what and how you can donate. The MAO website does discuss how they help accomplish the mission. Again, you can directly see who wins the scholarships, where they are from, and how much money they were awarded. They can provide scholarship assistance due to the donations they receive. The MAO website does not mention how their current mission is different from past missions they have had, or even how they are different from competitors’ missions, such as Miss USA. In order to find out this information, one would have to go out of their way to find it elsewhere. The MAO website discusses activities using the same words that are directly in their mission. Scholarship and women’s education are the most important aspects of the mission statement. The website frequently mentions scholarships, education, and how you can donate. The MAO website explains the advantages of working to achieve the mission. They mention where exactly the money is coming from and shows stakeholders the advantages to donating (supporting women’s education). The MAO website does not try to identify parts of the mission that are not being accomplished.
