According to the information in the Article “The Misrepresentation of Africa” many commercials, T.V shows, and magazines associate African culture with poverty, violence and HIV/AIDS. I initially believed that was accurate due to that being the only thing advertised in the media. Many people now believe the way I did before I started this research project. For someone who has never visited Africa a day in my life, could I really be the blame for my misinterpretation of the continent? Therefore, I thought this would be a different but yet stimulating topic for my research project. (Araya)
Numerous things lead individuals to stereotype Africa. For instance, What do you see when a commercial on Africa is displayed? Young, skinny, and starving kids begging you to either adopt or donate. While that is a great gesture if you choose to do that it is not what Africa is predominantly about, Yes, it is true that many parts of Africa are poverty stricken there is no denying that but did you know that South Africa has one of the biggest malls. Which is false, although they do work harder. However, they do attend private or public schools. They have youth centers and theatre camps for children to express themselves and for them to come out of their shells. In the article I read, Zandile Mazaleni explains how she brushes her teeth, washes her face, gets dressed and goes to school, which is the normal life of an American child. She goes to the theatre camp then goes home. She helps her parents with dinner, which seems like a normal child’s routine. So why isn’t normal daily task like these depicted about Africa? (Time for
