Early Life
Milton Snavely Hershey was the son of a Christian family. His family were members of Pennsylvania's Mennonite community. His younger sister Serena, died at the age of four due to Scarlet Fever. He could then acquire supplies of fresh milk he needed to perfect fine milk chocolate, which at that time was a luxury product. Hershey then developed a formula for milk chocolate and aimed to sell it to the American public. Through many attempts, he created his own formula for milk chocolate. The first Hershey bar was produced in 1900, then followed by Hershey's Kisses in 1907, and finally the Hershey's Bar with almonds made an introduction in 1908.
On March 2, 1903, he began planning on what was to become the world’s largest chocolate manufacturing company, unfortunately he did not know and expect it would become such a large company. The facility was completed 2 year later in 1905. Hershey’s milk chocolate became the first nationwide marketed product of its kind. Because the land was in the center of many dairy farms, He was able to use fresh milk to produce quality milk chocolate. He still experimented and tried to perfect his process of making milk chocolate using the techniques he had learned to make caramel by adding milk.

Milton Snavely Hershey was born on September 13, 1857. He was born near Derry Church, Pennsylvania. Derry Church is in southern Pennsylvania near the chocolate factory town of Hershey, Pennsylvania. Milton was born into a mennonite family. He spoke a german dialect of original Pennsylvania dutch. His mother followed the teachings of the Mennonites. Their simple faith was something she practiced all her life. His father on the other hand was a farmer. His father Henry Hershey, did not make much money as a farmer so he moved his family all around southern Pennsylvania. He did this in pursuit of a way to make money. Milton attended seven different schools in eight years. Going to all those different schools seemed like it was for nothing because Milton did not attend school after fourth grade. His dad pulled him out to work with as an apprentice to a printer. This did not seem to suit Milton because he later became an
Before Milton Hershey had a world wide known chocolate business, he had a small, not so well known caramel business. Milton Hershey began his chocolate making business in 1893, when his father and him traveled to Chicago to attend a big job fair (Tarshis 14), but it wasn’t until 1900 when Hershey succeed in making the first milk chocolate candy bar (The Hershey Company). Hershey attended an exhibit hall of new and amazing inventions around the world at the fair in Chicago. As Hershey walked into the exhibit hall, he was struck by a delectable smell (Tarshis 14). “Hershey was already a leading candy maker. He had created the largest caramel factory in the country, but he became convinced that the future of his business would be chocolate. At the fair in Chicago, Hershey Bought chocolate-making equipment. He had it shipped back to his caramel factory in Pennsylvania. Then he hired two chocolate makers. Soon the company was churning out chocolate candies in more than 100 shapes” (Tarshis 15).
Milton S. Hershey was born in a small Pennsylvania town named Derry Township on September 13, 18571. He was the only child of Fannie and Henry Hershey. His mother was a Mennonite2 and moved often, which disrupted his education and could only finish 4th grade3. Hershey became an apprentice of a Lancaster candy maker for four years and started to get into the candy business. Milton opened his first candy store in Philadelphia on 1876 at the age of 184which failed after 6 years and went bankrupt on 1882.5 Milton then tried his luck at opening candy stores at Chicago and New York, both resulting in failure and went bankrupt again on 1886.6 When Milton visited Denver, he discovered how to mix fresh milk with caramel and returned to Lancaster to start a caramel business on 1883. 7his business proved to be a huge success and was named the Lancaster Caramel Company8. The success of this caramel company was the thing that set Milton as a candy maker and provided him with financial stability to start on his next interest, chocolate. Milton purchased his first chocolate-making equipment from a German company called J.M.Lehmamm Company on 1893 that was displayed in the World’s Columbian Expedition9. He started a sub-company called Hershey Chocolate Company under the Lancaster Caramel Company and began to produce chocolates. On 1900, Hershey sold his successful caramel company for $1,000, 0010and in order to set his sights to begin mass-producing chocolate. Hershey needed a place to produce that much chocolate and returned to Derry Township, PA to build his new factory on 1903. The Derry Township was an ideal location for producing chocolate because of its source of water, fresh milk, and workers. The factory, later named The Chocolate Factory was built on 1905 and used latest mass production techniques that produced the first milk chocolate that was made in America 11.
Milton Hershey is best known for being the creator of Hershey’s chocolate. However, he has accomplished more than concocting caramels and candies. Mr. Hershey was a philanthropist, someone who has an aspiration to aid people and end social problems. They do so by donating large amounts of their personal fortune to help people or things, somewhat like a charity, but the purpose is for it to last a long time rather than just for a while. Likewise, Milton Hershey was a caring man who sought to make life better for people, whether they be man, woman, or child.
Milton Hershey was not the type of person that anyone would have viewed as a leader, or shrewd businessman. Being born into a rather poor lower class family, he was not very well educated. The one thing that we do know for sure though, is that leaders are not born, they are made. This is exactly the case of Milton Hershey, and because of his undying determination to succeed, he became one of the greatest success stories of all time.
What do you think of when you hear the word kiss? Milton Hershey did not want you to think of the romantic gesture of lips smacking together. Instead he invented the Hershey Kiss. This great invention is mouthwatering, milk chocolate that millions of people consume every year. The famous Kiss was invented in 1907 by Milton S. Hershey. Hershey wanted to intertwine romance and his passion of making chocolate. This chocolate sensation became popular for its odd tear-shaped piece of chocolate. Hershey Kisses have evolved into the fascinating chocolates people continue eating today. The multimillion dollar company continues to expand its candy making. The Hershey’s Chocolate Company took time to develop, but once they came
Chocolate is made from the seeds of the tropical tree, Theobroma cacao. Theobroma is the Greek term for 'food of the gods.' In Aztec society chocolate was a food of the gods, reserved for priests, warriors and nobility. The Aztecs used cacao beans to make a hot, frothy and bitter beverage called chocolatl. Chocolatl was a sacred concoction that was associated with fertility and wisdom. It was also thought to have stimulating and restorative properties. The bitter drink was first introduced to Europe in 1528. However, it was not until 1876 that milk, cocoa powder and cocoa butter were combined to form what we now know as chocolate (1).

...terized as the “Henry Ford of Chocolate Makers.” With the help from his aunt, he established his own candy business in Philadelphia in 1876, he was merely 19. He mainly produced caramel confections, which he ended up selling for one million dollars after a trip to the chocolate centers of Europe. With the money, Hershey bought a farm in Derry Township, Pennsylvania, and built his chocolate factory. This became the nucleus of “Hershey, the Chocolate Town.”
Mr. Hershey treated his employees exceptionally well, ever since he first opened his business. His personal philosophy revolved around sharing wealth with others and helping who he could. Even in the Great Depression he employed as many people as he could. His business helped support an entire town, built around his factory.
During a "chocolate scare" in the early 1970's when the supply of chocolate went way down and the price went way up Hershey's who uses chocolate as a main ingredient more than Mars does had to cut down on spending in some area of business, so they chose to cut down spending on advertising. Mars saw this as an opportunity to spend more money on advertising and even more importantly M&M/Mars saw an opportunity to knock Hershey's out of the #1 spot. M&M's plan was successful, they used very aggressive marketing and they become the #1 chocolate/candy company in America.

The production of chocolate takes place in several stages. First, the bitter cacao seeds have to be fermented so that their intense bitter taste becomes milder. After fermentation, the beans are dried, cleaned and roasted. The cocoa mass is then obtained, which represents pure chocolate in rough form. When this mass is liquefied, it is transformed into chocolate liquor, which, on the other hand, may be further processed into cocoa solids or cocoa butter. Various chocolate products are produced as a result from different combinations of cocoa solids and cocoa butter as well as from adding other ingredients such as milk, sugar, all sorts of flavors, etc.

Healthcare in the rural population faces challenges not as present in the urban population. Physicians and specialties are not as widespread as in urban settings. Public transportation is not as available and travel distance is greater. These barriers also affect mental health care. 30% of the US population live in a county designated as a Mental Health Professional Shortage Area (County Health Rankings & Road Maps, 2017).
