On September 13, 1857, Milton Hershey was born on a farm near Derry Church, a quaint Pennsylvania community. He was the only surviving child of Fannie and Henry Hershey. The Hershey family moved frequently and interrupted Milton’s education and left him with only completing the fourth grade. After a four-year apprenticeship with a Lancaster candy maker, Hershey created his first candy making business in Philadelphia. His first three attempts were fails. He then established the Lancaster Caramel Company which immediately came to be a success. That business is what set him up for his future accomplishments. Hershey’s attempts to link the consumer with the product in order to gain the consumer’s attention. When the consumer witnesses a commercial or advertisement that will fulfill their wants and needs, it is more likely for them to be interested in purchasing that product. According to Brian Martin, there are ten basic desires that a brand wants to fulfill for their consumers. The ten wants that consumers desire are to feel safe and secure, to feel comfortable, to be cared for and connected to others, to be desired by others, to be free to do what we want, to grow and become more, to serve others and give back, to be surprised and excited and to believe there is a higher purpose (Martin). The more wants that are met, the more success the brand will have. Hershey’s seeks to meet as many desires as possible by in their commercials and advertisements. “Fortunately for brands, when it comes to identifying what people want, we aren’t particular complex. The human mind seeks to satisfy ten primary wants. Direct your actions toward meeting as many as possible, and your brand will grow exponentially” (Martin). The similar goal for each advertising strategy is to ultimately maintain or increase profit, create brand trust with the consumers and to sustain a well-liked perception of the brand. The Hershey’s brand is very stable and successful when marketing to consumers. The sources include that appealing to emotional and physical wants and desires are what best increases consumer interest. Each thread appeals to the audience’s emotions, wants and needs. The threads all have commonalities that relate to satisfying the consumer. Hershey’s maintains consumers enthusiasm by being all around family-friendly, trustworthy and sensible. The techniques used by Hershey’s is particularly to attract consumers and use persuasion to sell the product. The sources that are used to explain the marketing strategies of the Hershey’s company are able to provide explanations of what makes a successful brand. In this literature review, I have learned the similarities and differences between each one of the primary, scholarly secondary and secondary sources I used throughout this research portion. After assembling these outside sources, it is now easier to evaluate and interpret the relevance of the research and how it can be beneficial for the argumentative paper.
