Nursing and midwifery board of Australia or NMBA is the national board which keep the people safe by shielding them with qualified and skilful nurses and midwives to provide nursing and midwifery care. NMBA works together for the smooth functioning with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). This board is legally constituted body which is accountable for registering the students, midwifery practitioners and nurses only to them who will fulfil the conditions of the board in the proper manner. The guidelines, codes and the developing standards comes under this board which look on the standards for the nurses. Continuing professional development is the registration standard in which the nurses, midwives enhance their knowledge improve their skills and their experience. Criminal history ensures that the nurse and the midwives which are going to be registered should be fare with criminal background and they should not be involved in the crime and if a nurse or midwife was involved in a crime they must inform the NMBA. The word family cannot be described or translated by one single universal definition. Different people have different views and meanings as to what a family means to them, but however different all families share similar characteristics. The Oxford Dictionary describes a family as a group consisting of parents and children living together in a household of common descent (2014). However, in today's society, families are evolving and changing in the way that is much different than the traditional nuclear family. As noted by NY Times, in today's society a family can be comprised of a single mother or father, gay/lesbian couple, couples that are unmarried and living together with their children, inter-racial marriages and couples, raising kids from behind bars (incarcerated) and even going from friends to caretakers (Angier, 2013). The term family in today's society is so dynamic, and it is the responsibility of all obstetric nurses to understand the changing family dynamic to be able to assess and determine if the proper care can be given to a newborn based on the education level, psychosocial status, welfare and support of the patient so that the newborn can grow up in an optimal environment with their new family.

A criminal record is required by any site providing clinical practice, the clinical practice site will determine the acceptance or denial of a placement. If the student has a criminal history, it may result in limited placement facilities as some work settings, such as elder or paediatric care (Ohio, 2012). Students who believe they are unable to satisfy the criminal record should contact the education provider before the commencement date of their placement. It is said that professional nursing practice should be impacted by patient outcome and not for the nurses’ history (Duffield, 2011). The student should be honest and notify the education provider that they have a criminal record and from this some their eligibility to placement is determined by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia Criminal history registration standard. Competence in nursing is having the knowledge, judgement, skills and experience to carry out professional duties correctly and effectively (RCN, 2009). All nurses must prove their level of competence before they can become registered as a nurse. They must do this by showing their competencies in all fields of nursing, and by proving their specific competencies in their own field of nursing, without doing this, they will not be allowed to practice. This ensures that all practicing nurses have a high level of competency. The nursing and midwifery council also states that to protect the public they ensure that they set standards for education, training and conduct, and by ensuring registered nurses keep their skills and knowledge up to date.
Standards are important aspects of nursing that a nurse must learn and implement every day for the rest of their nursing career. These standards provide for a nurse’s competence in the quality of care they deliver to the public. Standards offer a necessary guidance to nurses everywhere in an effort to ensure that people are treated correctly and ethically. Patients expect nurses to have a general knowledge of the medical realm and to know exactly what it is they –as nurses- are responsible for. Nurses need to have a sense of professionalism that enable the patient to feel safe and secure, knowing that a competent person is caring for him. A lack of professionalism does the opposite, making it impossible for a patient to trust or respect the nurse caring for him. Standards of nursing, if utilized correctly, give the nurse that sense of professionalism the patient is expecting. It insures for the safety of the patient and allows the nurse to provide quality health care that is expected of a medical professional.
