When they stepped into the bright light Karina said “oh, no” and started to get mad. Karina’s face began to turn red as she took a clean tissue and stroked it against Vincent’s face then showed it to Vincent. Vincent stared at the smear of dark purple on the tissue and she started to yell that Delia was here. He made up an excuse that she just showed up at his door and when she left she kissed him on the cheek. Karina got mad and ran to her car and speeded around the corner and left. The next day in school Delia was with her two friends when Karina came in and started to push her around, she ripped up Delia’s clothes and pulled her earring ripping her earlobe, Blood was then smeared all over the floor. They called the police and they came and did investigations they also asked many questions. They took Delia down to their office and began to question her if she killed him. They said they found a lip print of Midnight Wine lipstick on the body and that Delia is the only one who wears that color. Delia examined the picture and a picture that she kissed in the office. She saw that the one she kissed and the one on the body looks different. She said that someone set her up by taking the print from a tissue that she blots her lips with and stamped it on him. The officers were enticed towards their imminent deaths with a car chase which was set up by the Latino gang members. This chase led them towards an apartment complex which was rigged with many gang members and artillery to ensure that neither Taylor nor Zavala would survive. The excitement of New Years Eve comes from the lighting of the fireworks, as Elena describes, people “shouted with joy and hugged each other” (174), and the children were filled with “a fearful wonder” (174). In this moment the people, so full of anger, seem to reconcile, and the neighbourhood changes from dangerous to “a celebratory atmosphere of growing excitement” (174). This joy illuminates the childhood Elena could have had; one in which neighbours are friends, and past grudges fall away like they are nothing. However, the competitive and violent nature of the neighbourhood, emerges as the night progresses. When Rino and his friends fail to surpass the firework show put on by the Solara family, they turn to hurling insults at them from the street. This is not received kindly by the Solara brothers, who return with gunfire, as Elena describes “in order to win, [they] were shooting at us” (178). It is here, enclosed within the joy of fireworks and the threat of gunfire, that Lila experiences her first episode of “dissolving margins” (89). This episode represents the loss of innocence in both girls, and adds a new layer of complexity to their relationship. Elena begins to yearn for a deeper understanding of her best friend, emphasizing the secretive nature of Lila and her ultimate desire to

Love seems to be complicated. There are different parts of a person that you undoubtedly love. Those are the pieces of memories that tend to stick around if the person doesn't. In Pablo Neruda's poem "Tonight I Can Write", he goes moment by moment of the flashbacks he had with his loved one. Although his heart is broken, he's trying his best to move on from the anonymous women who left him. With the author's specific use of personification, repetition, imagery, irony and symbolism, the poem shows the true pain of a heart ache.
