Microwaves are an important part of our society. We use them in everyday life and its a commonly held in households, but there are negative effects to them. Microwave Radiation is lethal and you can get it from microwaves and other things in your everyday life. Over time things have been altered in order to keep people safe. Modifications have been made to microwaves in order to reduce the risk of microwave radiation.
Microwave Ovens were discovered accidentally by, Percy Spencer in 1945. He was working on an active radar set and he realized that his Mr. Goodbar was melting in his pocket. Spencer constructed a high density electromagnetic field by transferring microwave energy to a metal box using an electron tube. The first foods to be cooked in the microwave were popcorn and eggs. Once the food was placed in the box that was heated with microwave energy then the temperature of the food rose rapidly.
The idea of the microwave cooking process was patented by Raytheon in October 1945. The microwave oven was first tested in a Boston restaurant. 1947 was the first time the public were able to use the microwave oven. The first commercially available oven was also in 1947, it was built by Raytheon and it was called the Radarange. It was 5 feet and 11 inches and it weighed 750 pounds. The price of it was $5,000 and it held three kilowatts and was water cooled. The wattage is about three times more than household microwaves now.
Over time the microwave has developed in different ways. It is smaller, less wattage, and less expensive. In 1954 Raytheon produced a microwave that contained only 1.6 kilowatts. Microwave radiation is used to treat liver cancer. It’s been tested on animals, during the process they insert an antenna into liver tissue or the hepatoma and they investigate the changes of ultrastructure,the liver pathology,and healing of radiated liver. Results showed that air bubbles were formed in liver tissue and its small veins when the temperature was higher than 80 degrees. The liver divided into three parts and the cancer was greatly reduced.
Microwave radiation is dangerous but, we are exposed to it everyday. And even though it can be lethal it is used to help us in our everyday lives and it can possibly be the cure to a cancer.
Ewald Georg von Kleist is a German scientist who created the capacitor in November of 1745. Regrettably, Kleist did not have the proper paper work to claim in the records that the design of the capacitor was his idea. Many months later, a Dutch professor named Pieter van Musschenbroek created the Leyden jar, the world’s first capacitor (on record). It was a simple jar that was half filled with water and metal above it. A metal wire was connected to it and that wire released charges. Benjamin Franklin created his own version of the Leyden jar, the flat capacitor. This was the same experiment for the more part, but it had a flat piece of glass inside of the jar. Michael Faraday was the first scientist to apply this concept to transport electric power over a large distance. Faraday created the unit of measurement for a capacitor, called Farad.

Millions of people around the world use cell phones on a daily basis and people hardly realize the terminal risks. Cell phones may seem completely harmless, but they actually emit radio waves that can be hazardous towards the human body. Each time someone makes a call or receives a call, a type of cancerous radiation is given off by the cell phone in order for the user to communicate with the person on the other side of the line. Since the amount of cell phone users has rose rapidly, more people are being exposed to this kind of radiation. As cell phones undergo advancements, people are starting to use them more often, leading to an increase in the amount and length of calls each day. Some believe that these radio waves do no such harm to your body due to the radiation wave being weak but in reality, exposure to any kind of radiation is never safe. Radio waves might not affect the human body immediately, but after a long period of time the effects are bound to reveal. Cell phones can increase the risk of cancer because its radiation affects brain cells, causes tumors, and is hazardously absorbed by the tissues in the body.
One of the first inventions but more so of a discovery was the idea of nuclear fusion. It was discovered by a German scientist in february of 1939. This led to the invention of the atomic bomb. Gamma rays can be used for many different applications, they could be of very little importance, or they could be life saving. One very important use for gamma rays is for cancer radiation therapy. Radiation therapy is a high radiation transmitted to the body to shrink tumors and kill cancer cells. The main type of radiation is using gamma rays. There are two other types; x-rays and charged particles. A machine outside of the body delivers the radiation. However in some cases it can be delivered internally through a radioactive material placed near the cancer cells. About half of all cancer patients receive some type of radiation therapy sometime, the course of their treatment.

Throughout time, this field of study has grown and has become one of the most prominent fields of science. Radiation is something that we as a human race will never be able to escape. Pierre and Marie Curie were a husband-wife duo that both studied at the Sorbonne. Heat and x-rays are an example of radiation. A type of non-ionizing radiation is radiofrequency radiation. (Cancer 1) If radiofrequency radiation is engrossed in large amounts of materials containing water and food it can produce heat. This can lead to burns, tissue damage, and harm DNA cells. The history of engineering goes back into the 19th century when Alexander Volta (1745-1827) made a remarkable discover regarding the nature of electricity (Cosgrove 749). He discovered that electrical current could be controlled and could flow from one point to another. By the time the mid-19th century came about the rules for electricity were being established. During this time electromagnetic induction was discovered by Michael Faraday who lived from 1791 to 1867 (749). Also during this time Samuel Morris invented the telegraph in 1837 which relies on the principles of electromagnetic induction (749). Alexander Graham Bell, who lived from 1847 to 1922, created the telephone which also uses electricity in order to operate (749). Through the success of the telephone, Bell Telephone Company was established. In 1878, the light bulb was finally invented by Thomas Edison who lived from 1847 to 1931 (749). Off the principles of Faraday’s electric motor from 1821, Nicholas Tesla invented a more efficient and powerful electric motor in 1888 (749). To make these inventions be more significant, effort was expended to make better motors and transformers and to enhance the power needed to make them function. The microwave is a prime example of technology making us happy. If we were to get rid of the microwave, many people would be angry because it is a very helpful and time saving device. If there was no microwave people would not be able to defrost the ground meat they forgot to leave out, nor would they be able to cook a hot pocket for lunch when they were short on time. Some people believe that items that are efficient make society happy.
