Since its beginning, the Manhattan Project has become synonymous with images and ideas of death, devastation and war. What few people consider though, is that without the United States initial concern in creating weapons of mass destruction, there would be larger changes in society than simply having less bombs. Nuclear energy production was hardly given a thought before scientists saw the awe-inspiring power of nuclear fission. Currently, plants use fission reactions, which is the bombardment of atoms with neutrons to split atoms into new materials, releasing the energy which we have all come to rely on. Fusion is essentially the opposite of fission. Fusion is the combination of atoms to make new elements, what is happening at the core of our sun currently. When atoms are fused, a massive amount of energy is released, making the cost of producing nearly free once fusion is obtained. One other large advantage of fusion energy is the by-products produced by the chain reaction in fusion. The second most abundantly used power source in fission reactors behind uranium is plutonium. During the Second World War, the Nazis were very powerful. Due to the fear of the Nazis, Americans started a project called “The Manhattan Project" in order to build a very deadly weapon that could even blow cities apart. The allied powers were so concerned with Nazi domination, that they never considered the outcomes of creating an atomic bomb which are also positive and negative. The development of the atomic bomb boosted the level of understanding in terms of physics and chemistry of that particular time period.
The atomic bomb created under the Manhattan Project set a new level of psychological panic. It influence media, government, and daily lives of those all around the world. The media was covering stories about protection from a nuclear attack and the government was right next to the reporters helping to further the creation of fear with their messages about preparation.
In The Manhattan project, Jeff Hughes claims that the development of atomic weapons in World War II did not create “Big Science,” but simply accelerated trends in scientific research and development that had already taken place. Hughes was able to support his argument by introducing the Big science and the atomic bomb which was a main factor of World War II. Primarily, the research done to create an atomic bomb led to the discovery of how to harness nuclear power which affects our lives to this day. However, the Manhattan Project also led to the creation of two more atomic bombs which would be used in WWII, radiation poisoning resulting in the death of many , fear of nuclear weapons during the Cold War, the end of the Second World War which was still taking place in Japan, and the threat of nuclear weapons around the world that still exists.

The Manhattan Project totaled to a cost of two billion dollars. They were able to create fission bombs that changed the look and destruction of war (Stimson). With Japan’s surrender, World War II was coming to an end. The emperor was looked down by a small groups but was later subdued. With this great power comes a great responsibility. An all out nuclear warfare could destroy humanity. To make sure a nuclear warfare doesn’t happen, treaties were made so no country would fire a nuclear weapon unless they wanted to strike first which would result in the start of a nuclear warfare. Now that most countries possess nuclear weapons, everyone must watch each other before another World War starts.
Compared to fossil fuels, nuclear fission produces around a million times more energy per unit weight, making it much more attractive as an alternative source of energy. However, there are some disadvantages with this process, the main disadvantage is the large amount of high level radioactive waste that is generated; on average a nuclear reactor has 20 tonnes of nuclear waste a year. As well as this, there is also alot of low level radioactive waste produced, this is made up of pieces of equipment and parts from the reactor that have become radioactive. All of the nuclear waste must be stored deep in the ground in large concrete blocks. This is a very expensive process and must be monitored as the radioactive waste takes thousands of years to decay to a safe level.
Hiroshima served as an example of the kind of destruction that can potentially be produced by science, but it also showed the hope for a newer, more efficient source of energy. The Atoms for Peace Initiative has attempted to convince countries from using nuclear power as a destructive force, and will hopefully succeed, as it has so far, in keeping atomic bombs from being used. Nuclear energy is a renewable source of energy that has been found to be incredibly efficient, and is continuing to be developed. The lasting effects of Hiroshima should be enough to convince countries from deciding to use nuclear weapons, but the future of nuclear energy is continuing to be observed and developed.
