Raphael was born, Rafaello Sanzio da Urbino in Urbino Italy on April 6th 1483. In 1504 he became Perugino’s apprentice, he’s most famous for his series of Madonna paintings he did in 1509 to 1511. He was so well liked that Pope Julius II hired him as his Chief Architect in 1514. He also painted the “Room of Heliodorus” or the Stanza della Segnature in the Palace of the Vatican, unfortunately he passed away on April 6th 1520 in Rome. His father soon realized that he wanted no part in traditional school and saw the talent that his soon had and at the age of 13 he offered to apprentice his son then soon moved to Florence where he learned the Fresco technique. After only a year at his apprenticeship he got the extraodinary opportunity to move into the palace of Lorenzo the Magnificent, while living with the Medici family he got access to many more wonderful opportunity’s and important people. Bertoldo di Giovanni (who was a respected sculptor himself) was one who inspired him the most, exposing him to poets and scholars, he even got permission for the Catholic Church to study cadavers to learn more about human anatomy, and to think this all happened when he was only around 16 years old.

Christie's London announced on May 21, 2007 that Lorenzo de' Medici (1518), a portrait of sound provenance by renowned Italian Renaissance master Raffaello Sanzio, called Raphael (1483-1520), will be available for purchase as part of its Important Old Master and British Pictures auction on Thursday, July 5, 2007. On display at the esteemed auction house's King Street salerooms, beginning June 30, will be Raphael's painting, one of a handful by the artist still privately held. Owned by Ira Spanierman since 1968, issues of the work's attribution to Raphael were tackled by Sir Charles Robinson (1824-1913) and firmly resolved in 1971 by the prolific Konrad Oberhuber, former director of Vienna's Albertina Museum. The masterpiece is expected to garner up to £15 million at auction. Lorenzo de' Medici was last exhibited publicly more than 40 years ago.
