I underestimated him. That's exactly what the teachers and coaches of Michael oher were thinking because they all underestimated his set of skills at one point in Michael's life. The theme of the blind side is don't underestimate anyone. Michael was underestimated in sports and his teachers underestimated his ability to learn.
The first place Michael is underestimated is when the teachers see his transcripts. “Michael there are a lot of people in this school waiting to see you fail.”(p.58), also “At the end of the first semester he'd come home from the briarcrest christian school with four A’s,two B’s, and a C.”(p.178). This shows how people underestimated Michael by expecting him to fail his classes at briarcrest, but after the first semester he was passing every one of his classes
Michael was also underestimated when it came to discus. “Because with the discus it’s not how big you are it’s about the technique you use. The discus is not physiologically suited for the football lineman type.”(p.77), and “Michael oher would break the west tennessee sectional record in the discus” (p.79). Because of Michaels body type he was underestimated in the discus. But in the end he broke
the tennessee record in discus.

Some may argue that the better theme of the blind side is that it doesn't matter where you start out, it only matters where you end because Michael started out living with his mom who was a crack addict who lived in a very bad neighborhood and ended up going to colleges and living in a rich white neighborhood, but the theme that best fits the blind side is do not underestimate people, because they don't just show Michael being underestimated they also show other people who got underestimated like joe montana.
“Walsh replaced Deberg in 1980 with a quarterback drafted in the third round who everyone said was too small and to weak an arm to play in
the NFL: Joe Montana”. Michael Oher and Joe Montana show that the theme is don't underestimate anyone we see this when Michael's teachers see his transcripts and, when Michael tries out for discus, and this is also shown when Joe Montana is first drafted to the san francisco 49’rs and people say he is too small to play. Michael lewis shows just how many times people are underestimated while trying to make something of their lives.
Michael was loyal and dedicated when he shocked Clyde, the guy that was trying to rob his mother. in that scene he was showing loyalty to his mother by Shocking Clyde, his mom became safe from hid gun.
However, the other Wes Moore did not get a good education. The author describes, “In spite of myself, I was impressed. I had never seen anything like that before. I had never seen a man, a peer, demand that much respect from his people. I had seen Shea demand respect in the neighborhood, but this was different. This was real respect, the kind you can’t beat out of people. That’s when I started to understand that I was in a different environment. It was a different psychological environment, where my normal expectations were inverted, where leadership was honored and class clowns ostracized” (96). As we see, the Wes distinguished real respect between Shea and the man. Actually, the Wes had never seen this respect before, but he could see it now in this school. It means that the Wes could learn more and more different things in the place. Therefore, it can let him know what he need and how to achieve his goal. Overall, the training in military school helped him choose the successful life. For another Wes Moore, he went back to school after he got out of jail. However, it did not last long that he gave up the education. The author writes, “Not surprisingly, without a high school diploma or job training and with a criminal record-Wes found it almost impossible to find a job to support his growing family” (110). As we see, the Wes wanted earn money to support his growing family. In this way, he should continue to go to school to
George Ohr was a mysterious and odd man. He was born in Bolixi, Mississippi July 12, 1857. His origins are from German. Meaning his parents were German immigrants who came to the United States. George Ohr was interested in various many other trades before finally learning about ceramics. He then became interested. He was an educated clay maker learning in New Orleans from a man named Joseph Meyer (“Wikipedia Contributors, George E. Ohr”).
doubted him. There were low expectations set for Mike as well as his peers. He just wanted to
The narrator is biased against the blind from the beginning. For instance, he stereotypes all blind people thinking they ...
They give him what he believes to be victories-the opportunity for a speech, the chance to prove his worth in the battle royal, the college scholarship-all of it, to keep him running. He finally realizes it. By studying this fascinating character which , I think, represents all blacks of that time I discovered that the prejudice is one problem that we as a society have to become more aware of. We have to get past the cover, and open up the book and read it before we judge. If people would do this it
This movie has a lot of credibility in my eyes because it is based of a true story. The course material that we have is accurately depicted in the film because it shows real life examples that are often seen in lower income families. By showing how Michael Oher came from a broken household that was constantly berated with negative influence, The Blind Side shows how important class, poverty, and the nurturing love of a family is for somebody’s
This is where he fell in love with the game of football and he knows that to play in the pro league, he had to improve his education. He received educational support and it was critical since he did not develop education prior to living the the Tuohy’s. Moreover, when having a conversation with Leigh Anne Tuohy, his adopted mother, about his football decision, she replies: “It’s your life, Michael, it’s your life” (Hancock, Netter, Smith,..., 2010). Michael comes to the understanding that his identity as a Tuohy, a black male, and a football player, does not have to come with any pressures or expectations (Kim, 2017). He realizes that he is able to decide for himself who he wants to be, and chooses to attend University of Mississippi and accept his football scholarship . This is essential on his development because his choice to focus on athletics, improve his GPA, and choosing a school to attend and play football allows Michael to develop a sense of identity and
By then Michael was kicking chairs and almost breaking into tears, he was extremely depressed. This meant he could never play football again, he loved it too much to give it up but he might have to. Michael couldn’t stop thinking about how he couldn’t play football. He just wanted to get back on the field and catch the ball and forget about everything, he wanted to play the game, forget about everything, and stay in that intense moment when the balls hurtling towards you and you could be the one to score for your team. He also thought that they might not be able to pay for the surgery(Concussion Legacy Foundation)
Both Sebastian Junger and Jacqueline Adams along with Ken Kostel write about natural disasters and their causes and effects. Although both texts have the same topic they use different strategies to present the topic.
The Blind Side is a film that follows the life of Michael Oher, an underprivileged high school football player that is supported by an upper class family, the Tuohys, and taken into their home. They provide him with shelter and a bed that he says he has never had. As the Tuohys are driving down the street one night, they see Michael walking alone in the cold. Mrs. Tuohy tells her husband to stop the car and she lets Michael inside. The couple discusses later that night about whether it was a good idea or not to allow Michael into their home. They ultimately decide that they are doing what is best for him and they can sacrifice a little bit of their life to help Michael. They support him in school, on the football field, and when he is
However, in my opinion, I believe that the two main themes in the movie are overcoming extreme adversity and acceptance. An example of overcoming extreme adversity is that Michael Oher grew up homeless and he was surrounded by drugs, violence, and crime. But he did not let that crush his dream of playing pro football. His determination kept him above wave after wave of difficulty, and eventually those difficulties helped carry him forward to his destination. According to an article from Lifeway, Michael Oher said, "If people hear my story, they will know that if you give somebody a chance, there is hope for that person"(Parker). What Oher means by this is that you never know how talented or how special someone can be until you give them a chance at what they want, and what he did is he took that shot and ran with it. In addition to overcoming extreme adversity, The Blind Side also teaches us about being accepting of everyone. Michael Oher was a struggling street kid until the Tuohy family brought him into their home and accepted him as part of their own family. Many people probably would not have the courtesy to take a random kid off the streets and bring them into their home. According to imbd.com, in the movie, character Beth states, "I think what you are doing is so great. Opening up your home to him... honey, you are changing that boy's life" followed by the response of Mrs.
Michael was feeling negative to neutral most of the time. Sometimes things would happen that pleased him, such as a serene day, or a new discovery, but these were far and few. He carried a weak, sensitive, and tired mind, conditioned from the trauma of a rough childhood and bullying. This ultimately made him depressed; his depression gave birth to the malaise.
When Michael realized that his reputation was not the hottest on the press, he totally gave up on his self image, caring less on what he looked like, and began foolish rumors about himself. He use to tell reporters when they would ask him on his “transformation to being white” that “his dad beat him
Michael grew up in the slums of Memphis TN. His dad gone, mom in and out of jail. He lived in a foster care home for most of his young years. He had very little schooling in fact he failed 1st and 2nd grade. This is before he met the Tuohy family. He had no place to call home until one cold rainy night when the Tuohy family saw Michael walking down the street walking to the high school because “it was warm in there” they then took him home. After living with the family for a couple months he was then adopted into the family. Shortly after he joined the school football team and he showed his skills for the first time, amazing everyone. Oher blossomed he attended Ole Miss on a full ride scholarship for football. Oher was chosen for the NFL draft on the 14 January 2008 but he declined because he wanted to play out his senior year. He was then signed to the baltimore ravens
