The Other Wes Moore One Name, Two Fates Analysis

How Family and Education Influence Children’s Decision Education, environment and family factors can determined a person’s future life is success or failure. The other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates talks about two people with a same name and the environments they grew up were similar. However, the decisions they made let they ended up with a different life. The author Wes Moore became a successful political, and the other Wes Moore became a criminal in the end. The reason is the author Wes Moore made a correct choice to enrich his future life. The other Wes failed his life because he made a wrong choice. Overall, the author Wes Moore was more successful than the other Wes Moore because of the supporting family, and strong education.

However, the other Wes Moore did not get a good education. The author describes, “In spite of myself, I was impressed. I had never seen anything like that before. I had never seen a man, a peer, demand that much respect from his people. I had seen Shea demand respect in the neighborhood, but this was different. This was real respect, the kind you can’t beat out of people. That’s when I started to understand that I was in a different environment. It was a different psychological environment, where my normal expectations were inverted, where leadership was honored and class clowns ostracized” (96). As we see, the Wes distinguished real respect between Shea and the man. Actually, the Wes had never seen this respect before, but he could see it now in this school. It means that the Wes could learn more and more different things in the place. Therefore, it can let him know what he need and how to achieve his goal. Overall, the training in military school helped him choose the successful life. For another Wes Moore, he went back to school after he got out of jail. However, it did not last long that he gave up the education. The author writes, “Not surprisingly, without a high school diploma or job training and with a criminal record-Wes found it almost impossible to find a job to support his growing family” (110). The other Wes’s father was not a good father because he was a drunk, and cannot guide his son better. The author Wes’s father gave positive influence to him, although they lived together just a short amount of time. The author Wes writes “I tried to copy his walk, his expression. I was his main man. He was my protector” (11). After the Wes did not know why his mother mad at him, his father patiently explained that Wes could not hit people especially women and you should defend them rather than fight them. Later, his father also led the Wes apologize to his sister and mother. As a matter of fact, the series of behaviors have deeply affected the Wes.
