Intro Mercy Corps has responded to nearly every global emergency in the last 20 years. Their mission is to alleviate suffering, poverty, and oppression by helping people build secure, productive, and just communities. Mercy Corps is a non-governmental organization similar to the Peace Corps. They work in more than 40 countries and work with local communities to find a way to build a stronger, safer community. History Mercy Corps was created in 1979 as the Save the Refugees Fund by Dan O’Neill. The fund was to support refugees fleeing war and famine. Dan met Ellsworth Culver in 1980 and find that they each have an interest in helping others. They committed to providing more innovative, sustainable aid and development to fragile communities. …show more content…
The two co-founded Mercy Corps in 1981 with the mission to alleviate suffering, poverty, and oppression. Projects & Activities Mercy Corps has volunteers and workers from all over the world who come to help their countries succeed.
Mercy Corps doesn’t normally send field workers to a foreign place. 85% of field workers work in the countries where they are from. They understand the language, the struggles, and how life works around there. Also others tend to open up more to people who know what they are going through. Mercy Corps works in over 40 different countries and works for 14 different causes including education, health, and economic opportunity. The picture next to this paragraph represents Mercy Corps’ vision for change and how they work. “In crisis, we believe in the power of human potential. In struggle, we believe in the ability of communities to grow stronger.” Get Involved There are many ways someone can get involved. You can volunteer as long as you have a high school diploma or the equivalent. You can hold fundraisers for Mercy Corps and send the earned money to Mercy Corps Headquarters in Portland, Oregon. You can also send in a donation(s) or attend events they hold such as lectures and fundraisers.Ways that teens can get involved are very limited. The only way I can find that a teen can get involved is if they hold fundraisers and send in donations. This is the reason I chose my challenge for the Million Dollar Challenge. Million Dollar
Challenge If I had a million dollars and gave it to Mercy Corps, I would like them to use that money to establish a program for high schoolers and students currently in college to help them get involved. Mercy Corps would tell them about what Mercy Corps does and about the opportunities they could have. They could also help the students organize local events and fundraisers for Mercy Corps. Also, Mercy Corps could build or buy at least one building for Mercy Corps in each state so that everyone gets equal opportunities. Conclusion Mercy Corps is a non-governmental, non-profit organization dedicated to the well-being and helping of others. They believe in the power of human potential and the ability of communities to grow stronger. They work in more than 40 different countries and for over 14 causes. The proliferation of crises around the world has led to a prominent increase in the amount of humanitarian aid needed. Humanitarian aid work represents not only compassion, but commitment to support innocent populations that have experienced sudden or on-going tragedies. Some of these tragedies include: malnutrition, genocide, diseases, torture, poverty, war, natural disasters, government negligence, and unfortunately much more. There is no doubt that these tragedies are some of the world’s toughest problems to solve as they are often complex, multifaceted and require diligence and patience. For this reason, being a humanitarian aid worker is more than a profession, it is a lifestyle that requires a sharp distinction between one’s work and
The American Red Cross, a non-profit organization is implementing a new industry standard system called BioArch to track and process its blood products. The new infrastructure will improve the quality of its blood products since employees will be able utilize products based on inventory and age. The system also improves the product tracking process currently in place and it promises to improve customer relations since most competitors are already using the BioArch system. Currently, systems regionally are different and therefore inventory is kept separate. This creates challenges in meeting customer demands and it increases manufacturing manual processes.
What were your goals for this project? Our goals for this project is to raise at least $100 for Saint Jude Children’s Research Hospital, but also to earn a good grade. We decide to choose St. Jude because Manuela personally has a one year old boy and she had commented that she saw a television commercial were a young boy was suffering from this horrible disease, but unfortunately lost his battle against cancer. We want create consciousness that with just donating 63 cents a day and $19 a month we can make a big difference, which you can help save a life of one of these children. Families who kids are receiving treatment, they never receive a bill charging them transportation and other services for example St. Jude pays for the children who
It is important to know how the Red Cross began. It was in June 1859 when Henry Dunant went to Solferino, north of Italy. He was a spectator of a small but bloody war. French and Italians had a battle against Austrians. There were more or less 40,000 victims. He was completely horrified with the scene. He interrupted his trip to help the hurt and organized volunteers to save lives.

North Carolina Laws for Imprisoned People In the United States, one in twenty-five people on death row are innocent (Ferner). This is true because people are wrongly convicted of crimes they did not commit. Our judicial system is not as perfect as it seems. There are many factors that tie into this, sometimes information is withheld, or racism between citizens and the police becomes a conflict, and much more. In the book Just Mercy, a story of justice and redemption, written by Bryan Stevenson, it has many different stories about wrongly imprisoned people and their stories.
From that perspective, I will highlight the following programs that Save the Children does here in the United States alone. This organization have four main programs. First is health and nutrition, second is education, third is emergencies, and fourth is hunger and livelihoods. For health and nutrition, Save the Children is visiting schools, and other institutions giving lessons about balanced food and healthy food choices. In addition, education contributes 22% of their main programs. They have school-based literacy programs for disadvantaged students from kindergarten through 6th grade, specifically in reading, math, and science. They also provide tools and support schools in this advocacy. Another, in times of emergencies like natural disasters, Save the Children is visible. During the floods in the Gulf Coast region, they were there to give emergency assistance. The organization provide child-focused emergency plans, trainings, and emergency resources in preparation for coming disasters. Moreover, on the hunger and livelihoods aspect, the organization believes in not just giving fish, they also teach families how to fish. This in my opinion, is commendable. Not all organization have this advocacy. It promotes families to stand and support their families and not just depend on aids from private and public sectors.
...e school, such as; Pelotonia, Light the Night for leukemia and lymphoma, Franklin County Board of Developmental Disabilities, etc… For many of these organizations I have volunteered more than once. Volunteering at Light the Night has a story. For my 16th Birthday party, I wanted to have my friends and I volunteer in the day while having fun at night. So I had 7 boys and girls, along with me, volunteer for Light the Night, organized by me. The party was a huge success and a lot of fun. I look forward to organizing more volunteer opportunities for my friends and I.
Mercy Drops is a local nonprofit organization, whose vision is to reach into the chaos of life and bring the good out of every person, family, and community it encounters. This vision is practiced through a variety of outreach efforts throughout the Portsmouth area. The oldest outreach, established in 2014, is the care package ministry. The care package ministry consists of handing out care packages, every Monday (regardless of the weather conditions or holidays) at two locations in Portsmouth to the homeless population and elderly community. Mercy Drops currently distributes 100 packages each week, totaling 5200 packages annually. Our desire to further grow this ministry to impact more people and we are asking for your help to do so.
What really sets this organization from the rest is how it is structured around their Christian faith, going into a rather historically culture where most of the population was devoted to the Roman Catholic Church. Being a Christian organization, it is rather obvious that they are not just there just to provide disaster risk reduction through aid, but as well spread the word of God with the attempt to “convert” over some people. The President of World Vision in 1987, Ted Engstrom, stated, “We analyze every project, every program we undertake, to make sure that within the [program] evangelism is a significant component. We cannot feed individuals and then let them go to hell” (qtd. in Hancock 9). This paper serves as an analysis of the fundamentals of the Christian humanitarian organization, World Vision International. As a humanitarian support, their service was of a great necessity in rebuilding Honduras that helped satisfy the voids other types of aid organizations were not able to provide or did not provide adequately by supplying disaster risk reduction to furthermore
I visited the House of Compassion which is facility in Marshalltown, IA. House of Compassion is a non-profit organization that opened twenty years ago. They are a place of hospitality for those that our hungry, homeless, or in need of medical assistance. The services they have include a supply closet, soup kitchen, emergency shelter, and a Medical Assistance Program. The supply closet enables them to supply personal hygiene products for families in need, diapers is a common need that is often forgotten by the public. The soup kitchen provides food for those that our hungry, and recently the House of Compassion as started a Garden of Compassion which they use to grow food to continue to feed and inform those that our in need. The Emergency Shelter is available for those that have no where to go. They have many beds for people to sleep in, and they are encouraged and supported while they are staying there. This is a common place for people to come in transition, in refuge, and most that come of a sense of hopelessness. Reversing this hopelessness is what the House of Compassion is hoping to do. They want to provide basic needs and help people back on their feet and experience again the hope that we have in Christ.
I will be graduating with my Associate Degree in Liberal Arts specializing in Health Science and will be continuing on the with my education in a Nursing program at Harrisburg Area Community College. Many of the morals and ethics that I have towards my field of study and the career path I have chosen correlate well with the College’s Core Values of Mercy. The College’s Core Values of Mercy are Mercy, Service, Hospitality, and Justice. In the healthcare field all these core values are at the fore front of our careers and are used every day with every patient and their families. Even now I incorporate these core values into my life because I work as an Emergency Medical Technician back home and I use these values to make all my decisions
The Red Brigades were an Italian terrorist organization with a strong emphasis on Marxism. Founded in 1969 by radical left-leaning students Renato Curcio and his wife Mara Cagol, the Red Brigades’ objective was “to destabilize the country” and “to overthrow capitalism” with tactics that “included robberies, kidnappings, assassinations, and arson”. In order to fully assess the impact of the Red Brigades in Italy, it is necessary to answer the question: why were the Red Brigades so violent? The answer is not as black and white as solely a pure pursuit of communism – as the above source suggests – although that is undeniably a reason. Since the violence of the Red Brigades is closely linked to the history of Italy and the events leading up
The non-charitable organisations objective embedded within its mission statement is to work with all its partners towards the attainment of the sustainable human development goals adopted by the world community and the realisation of the vision of peace and social progress enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations. UNICEF was created with the purpose of working with others to overcome the obstacles that poverty, violence, disease and discrimination place in a child’s path, thus advancing the cause of humanity.
It is a big question that most people often struggle with to decide when it is consider appropriate to assist an individual with mercy killing. In 1993, Robert Latimer a Saskatchewan farmer took the life of his twelve-year old daughter Tracy in an act of mercy killing. Latimer’s daughter suffered from the most dreadful form of cerebral palsy. She was severely disabled and had a mind of a four month old baby. Tracy was confined to a wheelchair and had endured multiple operations. She couldn’t walk, talk, or feed herself and she was in constant pain. After Robert Latimer learned that his daughter needed to go through another round of surgery, he knew he had to do something to save her from going through more pain. Therefore, Mr. Latimer decided
