Mercedes Pacheco is the youngest member of a group of family-oriented athletes. Athletics are nothing rare in the Pacheco family; from her father who swam for the Lobos, to her brother, Nathanael, who played soccer at Gonzaga. Mercedes herself entered into the athletic world at a young age, however, her first sport wasn’t the sport that she stuck with. At a young age, she started as a dancer and gymnast without giving any attention to other sports. It was in 8th grade though that she had the opportunity to try out for sports and so she gave volleyball a chance. She fell in love with the game, quit dance and gymnastics and “from then on, it’s just been volleyball.” Pacheco’s love for the game comes from so many aspects. Whether it’s the adrenaline rush of each play, the team aspect of the game, working together and adapting to each other’s personality, or the challenge of keeping her mental game strong. Volleyball has given more to …show more content…
It’s her family who is her number one priority. Pacheco had her family in mind when she made her decision to attend the University of New Mexico. Being able to stay close to family was very important when it came to choosing where she would pursue her academic and collegiate athletic career. Therefore, it was no surprise when the UNM was a contender. Regardless of the distance, it was the athletic atmosphere that finalized her decision. The environment stood out from other universities that she visited and the genuine relationships between the team and coaches were something that made a significant impact on Pacheco. Not to mention, attending UNM would achieve her dream of playing in front of a hometown crowd. Representing Lobo Athletics, UNM, and the state of New Mexico has been an experience unlike any other. “[Being a Lobo is] a lot more prideful for those of us who are in state than those who come out of state... to be able to represent our entire state is something that is super
Francisco Pizarro was a famous Spanish explorer. On September 13, 1524, Francisco Pizarro set sail from Panama to a conquest of Peru. He brought about eighty men and forty horses with him. Volleyball is a game which consists of teams of six which rally a ball over a net. Although anyone can play volleyball, sociologists have used a tool which displays how an individual decides to participate by exploring socio-cultural factors that can influence equity and access within sport. This tool is known as Figueroa’s Framework which was constructed by Peter Figueroa. “Figueroa developed a tool to investigate the issues surrounding access, equity and equality in sport and physical activity.” (12peboard.weebly.com). This framework consists of five levels they are Cultural, Structural, Institutional, Interpersonal and Individual; each level contributes to one another. Equity derived from the word equality looks at the equal opportunity/chance for everyone within any sport, whereas access focuses on the accessibility to equipment, a court, coaches etc. Both these elements have major impacts on whether the individual can easily participate and feel welcome in the sport. Figueroa’s Framework will be used to observe the Individual and Interpersonal level to self-evaluate my own participation and success in the sport Volleyball. These two levels will be discussed to demonstrate how the sport volleyball can be selected and what impact and effects are taken into consideration of this process and how they respond and develop. Problems in the equity of the sport will be looked and ideas will be discussed which could increase equity in the sport.
Most student-athletes grow up as very innocent lads bedecked with tremendous talents and become very promising in sports. Thus, they become rays of hope for their families, neighborhoods, and schools yet to be determined. Like the lamb in William Blake’s poem The Lamb, they are fed “by the stream & o’er the mead; gave…clothing of delight, softest clothing, wooly, bright…making all the vales rejoice.” (Smith 24) Then they are exposed to the life of hard work in which only the fittest survives. This makes them ready for the different challenges in the sports scene.
...ennis, basketball, soccer, and martial arts—have come from the days of cheerleading and synchronized swimming when she was growing up in the ’70s.” Disparities in media coverage and over-sexualized female athletes on magazine covers is something that needs to come to an end because of its effects on both male and female viewers, young and old, athletes and non-athletes. Both female and male athletics influence young people and shape their personality and morals as they mature. Retired WNBA player, Lisa Leslie credits her participation in basketball with shaping her character, as well as her career. “Sports can also help teenagers during an awkward time in their development.” (“Women’s Athletics: A Battle For Respect”). The solution is to come together as a society and identify how to balance the respect for female and male athletes in the media.
As Miller and Wilson revealed, athleticism is not always analogous with success. Willy regarded Biff highly because he observed Biff’s presence and athleticism, and he believed these qualities would result in immediate success. Today many parents associate sports with success and therefore pressure their children to excel in sports. In today’s society it is very rare that fears of discrimination would cause children to not pursue a lucrative career in sports. Both Miller and Wilson knew the impact of sports on family dynamics, and how sports have evolved from a leisure time activity to a full-time commitment. Clearly, many of the qualitative aspects of sports--competition, teamwork and physical dexterity can contribute to being a success in almost any career.
The history of sports goes back since ancient times. It has been a useful way for people to explore nature and their environment. Sports include different activities and games such as football, soccer, basketball, and etc. to express their skills and talents. Also, sports are a way to relax and have fun; but are sports all our African Americans rely on? The dream to become future sports stars. The reason why Gates begins his essay with an anecdote is to show and compare how many african-american athletes were at work today and how little the chances of African-Americans becoming athletes are compared to being a lawyer, dentist, or even a doctor. African-Americans assume that they are born athletes and it’s because the school system doesn’t teach them reality and educate them to undertake more realistic goals for careers.
I can watch volleyball all day because of how much precision, aggression, and mental toughness is needed. Spectators may not always see that side of the sport, but as a player, I know that it takes more than just a powerful hit or serve to be successful. Slamming the ball down other teams’ throats or hitting someone in the face so hard that they fall over (my personal favorite) are great, but, unfortunately, they’re not always the smartest choice. It’s the technique and the years of acquired intelligence of the game that keep me engaged and coming back for more.
Coakley (2009) starts off the chapter by introducing how participation in organized sports came about and how gender roles played a major role early on. He describes how most programs were for young boys with the hope that being involved would groom them to become productive in the economy. Girls were usually disregarded and ended up sitting in the stands watching their sibling’s ga...
She states, “Of the three sports I play, basketball is my favorite.” She became a member of the junior team her seventh grade year of school. Samone described how she became involved in basketball by saying, “After I was asked to try-out several times and declined each, I decided to be the manager so I could learn more about the game. When I was asked to try-out the next year, I did and quickly realized what I had been missing out on.” Samone, since then, has been playing the sport six years for the lady dawgs; she has fallen completely in love with the idea basketball.
Every since Tenleigh could run, she was involved with sports. Throughout her life Tenleigh did track, cross country, soccer as well as basketball. Her love for being active started at age 5. Chantz Smith, her dad, made Tenleigh run a mile twice a week for about 5 years but after about a month it turned into a hobby. Meanwhile, Tenleigh also played soccer. Courtnie Smith, her mom, coached a city league team, which Tenleigh played on until 4th grade. Tenleigh’s team usually scored over 20 points. They never lost a game. When Tenleigh quit soccer she started up basketball. She played for a competitive traveling AAU team called South East Idaho Hoops Academy called The HoopGurlz. The HoopGurlz played in meager local tournaments. They won most of them.
It has used factors of change such as: voyeurism, hegemony, symbolic glorification, commodification, socialisation and the agents of socialisation to promote a larger audience and excel its status amongst the sporting community. The intent of this essay was to examine the sport of beach volleyball and explain why the individuals, and the sport itself, have evolved throughout the years. This essay has successfully outlined how and why volleyball has undergone a dramatic change into beach volleyball and its positive step forward in the sporting hierarchy. It has overthrown the male hegemonic dominance seen in most sports, gained a much larger media attention and has climbed the ranks in the sporting community; and it's only itself to thank.
Once upon a time there was a girl who was only worried about soccer and her boyfriend. This girl’s name was Adamaris, and she had very supported people in her life that supported her so very much. Such as her parents, Ericka and Jose Garcia, her sister and brother, Claire and Neymar. Adamaris best friend Jayna, and also her handsome boyfriend Ivan. Adamaris main goal was to get a soccer scholarship. She didn’t care about nothing else but getting that scholarship. She practice each day and night at the park playing just soccer and practicing on her kicks. Adamaris had so many cool tricks she could do. For example, The Roll and Cut Reverse, and The Lunge. She was the only one in the girls soccer travel team that could do all those tricks. Her

Volleyball has been a passion of mine for a long time. I started playing volleyball in the sixth grade and every since then I have had an undying love for it. Choosing a sport was a little difficult because there were so many options, but all of the options did not fit for me. One reason I choose volleyball is because of the bond that I saw that all the girls had and I felt like creating bonds were important. Volleyball is all I have wanted every since then, and this is why I choose this picture to depict my society.
