Confidence, patience, and respect -- these are qualities often found in successful leaders. As a tutor for young children and teens at Kumon Tutoring Center, I demonstrate these skills on a daily basis. I display self-assurance when asked questioned by students and guardians alike, remain collected even when a fussy child does not, and understand that every child is trying their best no matter what pace they are progressing at. Even so, I was flustered when my manager asked me to supervise the facility for two weeks. She would be out of town for a business trip, and needed someone familiar with all aspects of Kumon to be a temporary manager, she said. For the next two weeks, my responsibilities increased tenfold. In addition to grading and tutoring, I recorded data, collected fees, supervised staff, and filed over 100 folders per day. My body was constantly moving, traveling from one area of the building to another to fulfill my duties. I worked overtime, staying after closing time for nearly an hour each day to ensure everything was prepared for the next class session. Although I never underestimated the abilities of my manager, I did not understand the full extent of her responsibilities until I experienced them firsthand. Sometimes, I was asked questions I did not know the solution to, and I had to politely respond: “The manager will …show more content…
“Video Producer” was the topic I chose for my project, for it is my dream job. I know it is not a plausible choice for many, and that it is unlikely I will actually pursue the job in the future. As a result, I was hesitant to explore its details, afraid to become attached to something I could not have. But, because of the Career Project, I was given an incentive to seek the information I was always curious to
The role of a leader is often inaccurately defined as an individual who is in a position to give orders. However, there are enormous differences in the attributes of an outstanding leader, and one of mediocrity. An outstanding leader, above all else, is a role model for their peers. In doing so, a leader of the highest caliber is trustworthy in both their peer’s trust for the leader as well as the leader’s trust of their peers. A leader must also display exceptional skill in communication which transcends speaking and, more importantly, includes listening and consideration to the ideas presented to them. Furthermore, a leader must be supportive of and willing to help their peers build their own strengths. The attributes listed above represent only a small subset of what makes an outstanding leader. Yet,
The intention of this written essay is to demonstrate an understanding of my views on reflection and the issues surrounding reflective practice. It is based on nursing skills that I used during my practice placement, most importantly reflecting on the professional value of privacy and dignity.
I chose to interview Regina Geis, who holds the administrative role as acting supervisor for the County Mental Health adult day program, which provides services for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Ms. Geis has held this position for 15 months. This is her first managerial position within a human service agency. Her style of management has changed over this short period of time. She feels that she is now more direct with her direction with staff. She stated, “Maybe now I come across as a little bit cold. But I have learned that I now have to use the least amount of words to get my point across.”
My first lessons on leadership were taken during my childhood days. I grew up observing my best friend’s mother effortlessly multi task her role of a CEO, a wife, a daughter-in-law and a mother - with a smile that ceased to leave her face and a personality that earned respect. I looked for nuances that set her apart and in the process, I learned many valuable lessons.
I then asked him if the youth center has ever considered asking for donations to go towards their funding, and if so what came as a result? He responded by stating that the youth center has indeed received donations in the past from various individuals, none of which though are large enough to have a lasting impact on the organization. Although “they did help ease some of the problems at the time being.”
The term reflection means the examination of personal thoughts and actions. For nurses this means focusing on how they interact with their colleagues and with the environment to obtain a clearer picture of their own behaviour. This means it is a process in which a nurse can better understand themselves in order to be able to build on existing strengths and take appropriate future action (Somerville, 2004). Reflection is a way to bring your own intuition along with empirical knowledge together. Reflective practice in nursing is guided by models of reflection. Reflective practice model serves as a framework within which nursing or other management professions can work. Reflective practice model is also a structural framework or learning model that serves the purposes of a profession and is particularly applicable to health related professions. Reflective practice enables practitioners to learn to value themselves as significant people with values and feelings that are important factors in giving care. Whilst reflective practice allows the nurse to recognise the value of their experiences, they may also need support to work through a difficult situation. This is where reflection aids nurses in dealing with these challenging experiences (Johns, 1995). Reflection on experience offers nurses the opportunity to reflect on caring in practice in ways that its nature can be understood, where the skills necessary for effective caring can be developed and most significantly, where the values of caring for people can be highlighted, both to the individual nurse and the world in general (Johns 1996)
It is important that leaders are competent in their leadership. “Being competent doesn’t mean that a leader knows how to do everything, but rather that they know what to do and how to get it done” (Leadership Now, 2007, para. 2). Subordinates should be able to observe an educational leader’s competence by their actions. Socrates (cited in Leadership Now, 2007, p. 4) asserted that “one who clearly knows best what ought to be done will most easily gain the obedience of the others.” Competent leaders will gain the loyalty and trust of
The patient was noticeably frustrated when she left the room. Dr. Schultz had given her extensive advice and very kindly told her that he would be unable to help with her problem. I was surprised. Not one to shy away from total knee replacement surgery, Dr. Schultz has always been confident, even with patients that are not in the primest physical condition. I realized that Dr. Schultz 's honesty reflected his true care for his patient. Dr. Schultz told me that it was difficult for him to say that he couldn 't operate on her. He said that once I become a physician, I must be able to go through all the training and experiences in my life and still retain the ability to say that I don 't have a good answer, even if it turns me into some sort of
A manager plays a pivotal role in steering the success and failure of the organization. As a budding manager, I wanted to get an insight about the daily activities of a manager and learn about their ‘typical day’. Therefore, an interview was scheduled, where the manager shared her views and gave invaluable advice on becoming an effective manager. This helped me in integrating the management concepts taught in the class and its implications in the real world.
. Prioritizing my daily activities based on importance has provided me with an starting point to increase my daily productivity.
"A leader is an individual (or, rarely, a set of individuals) who significantly affects the thoughts, feelings, and/or behaviors of a significant number of individuals” (Gardner, Howard 2012). An essential part of a leader lies in their ability to motivate and influence people to follow their lead. Leaders are both men and women who have the ability to influence others in a community, control situations, connect with others and persuade others to follow them or the goals they define. To be a good leader one must set a good example and make correct decisions for difficult choices. I myself am implementing leadership skills into my every day life. Leadership skills are all around us. They can be applied to any situation where one may be required to take the lead. This can be
An internship is a formal program to provide practical experience for beginners in an occupation or profession. By this point in my internship I am more than half way through it and taking on more and more responsibilities and positions as I go along.
For my assignment I have decided to choose a group which I have just finished taking for level 1 Hairdressing and they have progressed on to level 2 Hairdressing. This is within my current role as a hairdressing lecturer at Hugh Baird College which I have done since October. Within this group there are a couple of people who have support workers. There is one student within the group who has severe learning difficulties and is a more mature student. She also has many health problems which results in her having to carry an oxygen tank around for when she has any problems with her breathing due to her having problems with her heart. There is also another student in the class who has learning difficulties, she is very clever but just needs someone there for when she needs something explaining. She also has a support worker that comes in to give her support. This student has also been going through personal problems at home and has attendance issues. There is another student within this group who has severe dyslexia. She doesn’t have a support worker but the support people who are in there do give her help as she can have a tendency to give up, not to listen and just needs to be kept on track so by sitting next to a person that does have a support worker she gets the help from them. These three students have all had their level 1 qualification extended for a year were the rest of the group have progressed on to level 2 Hairdressing. Two of these students may progress on to level 2 but one doesn’t have the ability to be able to do this as the requirements are too high for her. The reason the course was extended for them was because they were struggling with the work that was required for this qualification, but as the col...
It has been a while since I started at the internship and I am really glad I decided to work here. I think the experience in this area is a good preview of my career and future. I am learning some important skills and finding out some things about myself and the tough skin I will need in order to stay in the area of juvenile support.
Education is a very important aspect in the life of a child. The level of success a student has in the classroom is greatly influenced by their teachers. Students, as well as their parents, depend on the teachers to guide them through their education. But who guides a teacher to perform successfully in the classroom? Principals and teachers play an important role in schools. A good relationship among school leaders and teachers is necessary and play an important role in making improvements in the school. Leadership refers to the “process in which one person successfully exerts influence over others to reach desired objectives”. (Okoji, 2015) Good leadership involves honesty, vision, confidence and commitment. It is the ability to inspire a
