While there have been several experiences that will stay with me, from feedback given to me by my mentor I think what I will need to work on the most is balancing multiple tasks at once. I was appointed SBLC Chairperson and the lead on our new teacher mentoring program that is working with about twelve new teachers. I was not aware I would be lead on the mentoring program until I received an email from our company explaining the duties. He has brought it to my attention that I am not keeping up with the mentors that should be working with new teachers, but aren’t, and I feel like this is due to the number of tasks I am trying to accomplish in addition to my regular duties as an academic specialist. I feel that I must improve my ability to multitask
and lead groups or professionals who are not driven to complete tasks that they have been assigned. In addition to this, I have been attending retention meetings and will attend more in the future. This is the first time my school is retaining any students so it is a learning process for me. It has been very interesting so far. The dean I am working with has explained to me the need to give parents irrefutable data that shows how much their student is struggling, including data and graphs that are parent-friendly, and to be very clear in the grade level expectations for the next grade level, including bringing textbooks from the next grade level to show parents. This is important in order for parents to understand the seriousness of the situation.
The intention of this written essay is to demonstrate an understanding of my views on reflection and the issues surrounding reflective practice. It is based on nursing skills that I used during my practice placement, most importantly reflecting on the professional value of privacy and dignity.
A paraprofessional job can at times be stressful and complicating. The job duties vary from day to day activities, as I can relate to it, because I am a paraprofessional at a school. As a result of this high energy burnout rate from daily activities that needs to be smoothly completed in a timely manner. It is essential to have a structured system of order. Therefore, a paraprofessional will always pair up with another paraprofessional, and will be directed by a special education teacher. Volunteering at a children’s crisis treatment facility, volunteering with Special Olympics, coaching children’s sports teams for 10 years and working as a substitute education assistant has increased my understanding of childhood development. Grandmound Elementary School provides me with opportunities to strengthen my leadership and collaboration skills, through teaching art (as a volunteer) to the 3rd, 4th and 5th grade and serving as PTA president. I was able to implement many enriching opportunities for students in areas of art, science, and reading. I learned to work as a team, set targets, achieve goals, give and receive guidance. Participating in these activities has confirmed that working with families and particularly children are my purpose.
For me competency 2 is the ability for us as social workers recognizing the characteristics and factors that help shape an individual’s identity and help define what an individual believes in and what they stand for. These characteristics and factors include things such as gender, ethnicity, culture, religion, age, etc. Its these characteristics and factors that affect an individual’s human experience and it’s what makes each of us incredibly unique. I then asked him if the youth center has ever considered asking for donations to go towards their funding, and if so what came as a result? The term reflection means the examination of personal thoughts and actions. For nurses this means focusing on how they interact with their colleagues and with the environment to obtain a clearer picture of their own behaviour. This means it is a process in which a nurse can better understand themselves in order to be able to build on existing strengths and take appropriate future action (Somerville, 2004). Reflection is a way to bring your own intuition along with empirical knowledge together. Reflective practice in nursing is guided by models of reflection. Reflective practice model serves as a framework within which nursing or other management professions can work. Reflective practice model is also a structural framework or learning model that serves the purposes of a profession and is particularly applicable to health related professions. Reflective practice enables practitioners to learn to value themselves as significant people with values and feelings that are important factors in giving care. Whilst reflective practice allows the nurse to recognise the value of their experiences, they may also need support to work through a difficult situation. This is where reflection aids nurses in dealing with these challenging experiences (Johns, 1995). Reflection on experience offers nurses the opportunity to reflect on caring in practice in ways that its nature can be understood, where the skills necessary for effective caring can be developed and most significantly, where the values of caring for people can be highlighted, both to the individual nurse and the world in general (Johns 1996)

In the professional realm I am well-tempered, reliable and an effective communicator. A good example of a time when I exhibited all three qualities would be during the summer when I served as a Tutor Counselor for Upward Bound at Mercer University. One morning, I woke up to two of my students knocking on the door because water was running through their ceiling. First, I found the source of the problem (a toilet overflowed from the third floor and poured all the way down to the first floor). During supervision, my supervisor immediately pointed out that the issues that I was having with this client was not anything personal. She explained how detrimental it can be to compare relationships and the different dynamics that influence a relationship. Southern (2007) illuminated how impactful it can be to work through countertransference and intersubjectivity during supervision and how imperative it is that the supervisor provide meaningful support and education for their supervisee. An internship is a formal program to provide practical experience for beginners in an occupation or profession. By this point in my internship I am more than half way through it and taking on more and more responsibilities and positions as I go along.
For my assignment I have decided to choose a group which I have just finished taking for level 1 Hairdressing and they have progressed on to level 2 Hairdressing. This is within my current role as a hairdressing lecturer at Hugh Baird College which I have done since October. Within this group there are a couple of people who have support workers. There is one student within the group who has severe learning difficulties and is a more mature student. She also has many health problems which results in her having to carry an oxygen tank around for when she has any problems with her breathing due to her having problems with her heart. There is also another student in the class who has learning difficulties, she is very clever but just needs someone there for when she needs something explaining. She also has a support worker that comes in to give her support. This student has also been going through personal problems at home and has attendance issues. There is another student within this group who has severe dyslexia. She doesn’t have a support worker but the support people who are in there do give her help as she can have a tendency to give up, not to listen and just needs to be kept on track so by sitting next to a person that does have a support worker she gets the help from them. These three students have all had their level 1 qualification extended for a year were the rest of the group have progressed on to level 2 Hairdressing. Two of these students may progress on to level 2 but one doesn’t have the ability to be able to do this as the requirements are too high for her. It has been a while since I started at the internship and I am really glad I decided to work here. I think the experience in this area is a good preview of my career and future. I am learning some important skills and finding out some things about myself and the tough skin I will need in order to stay in the area of juvenile support.
My ethical and moral views, beliefs, attitudes and values have been fashioned by an up bringing that centred on Christian beliefs. Even though religion was not forced upon me as a child, my mother raised us all with a strong sense of right and wrong. Along with the influence of my family, the Navy has had a big influence on the person I am. The Navy has a strong ethos of what is expected of the personnel that serve; this is made up of the following: Leadership, High Professional Standards, and Courage in Adversity, Determination, Loyalty, Mutual Respect, Discipline, A Sense of Humour, Teamwork, and A Can Do Attitude. Most recently of all though, the biggest thing that has influenced me as a person and a parent has been my experiences of working with young people. This includes acting as a Youth Advisor for Portsmouth City Council, a Mentor for Barnardos and a Youth Advisor for East Sussex County Council. I am currently working in two secondary schools as part of my resettlement from the Navy. This has given me the experience of working with young people living in virtual poverty, in constant trouble with the Police and education services and some young people with varying levels of disabilities. This work has given me a good ability to stay impartial, to be non judgemental and has given me a capacity to treat people a lot more emphatically than I was ever able to. This is because I have been exposed to a greater range of problems and personalities than I have been used to in the Navy. These are qualities that I will hopefully be able to transfer into my coaching practice.
On Tuesday, September first I met with my academic advisor, Dr. Ana Londono for the first time. We met in her office on the first floor of Young Hall. She informed me that it was only her third week as an advisor at Lindenwold University. I was a bit nervous after hearing that because my major is Pre-Nursing and I had a lot of questions to ask. One of my main reason of making an appointment with my advisor was to ask when I would be able to apply for nursing school. I took a lot of college credit classes in high school.
