Memory is a powerful tool required for one to grow as an individual and gain knowledge. Memory is defined as “the power or process of reproducing or recalling what has been learned and retained especially through associative mechanisms” (Webster). One’s memory can be compared to a computer 's information processing system. When we need to remember an event, we gather the information into our brain, which is known as encoding, and then we store the information and are be able to retrieve it. There are many ways for one to improve their memory. This memory aid technique comes in many forms that can be fun and easily memorized for some people. Mnemonic devices can vary from songs, pictures, symbols, words, phrases and even faces of other individuals (Terry W.S). They can also be used for everything, ranging from school related information to everyday task/information. For instance, the music mnemonics is commonly used amongst little children because they remember it better and faster. Like the ABC song or the fifty nifty song. Another example is acronyms, which are commonly used in math and science classes. Like in math class the acronym to remember the order of operations is PEMDAS (Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally). Likewise with Anatomy and Physiology, the phrase used to remember the eight small bones in the wrist is Never Lick Tilly’s Popsicle, Mother, May Come Home. Another example is the popular acronym to remember the seven coordinating conjunction for English, which are For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So (FANBOYS). Mechanical or rote repetition of the information is a great way to remember this information. The more time you spend rehearsing the information the longer the information will be remembered. This is actually a poor way of remembering things because it doesn’t make the information meaningful; “surface processing”. Elaborative Rehearsal is a more effective way of remembering information through “deep processing”, which is relating the information to information you already know. This technique is used in more in the education system than maintenance rehearsal. Even with these two ways to store things we still run into filling errors. Filling errors are where your brain has filed information incorrectly. The final step in the memory process is retrieval. Retrieval is the locating of stored information and returning it into your conscious thoughts. There are a few cues that help us retrieve them, such as priming, context, and state. Priming is the nonconscious identification or words and objects, by referring in to particular representations or associations in the memory just before carrying out the action or task. The memories that come back to your conscious mind when you are in a certain place or area are called context, dependent memories. Mnemonics uses techniques of rhymes, acronyms, diagrams, which help people to remember names, dates, facts, figures, and more. In this paper I plan to use the Mnemonics system to tell if this system actually works. Your memory is stored in the hippocampus, which is the area that they call the sea horse area of your brain, which is in the middle of your brain. When you think about a memory, different parts of your brain become more stimulated to recreate the scene. Some ways that the brain remembers things are using some of your five senses and more, such as color, smell, taste, touch, feelings, and shapes.

Dewhurst and Robinson (2004) conducted a study where 5, 8 and 11 year old children were tested on memory illusion. One of the procedures used to test false memories is the DRM paradigm. Memory is vital to the functioning and even the survival of humans. Without memory, we could never learn from our experience and we would operate meaninglessly, without plans or goals. Motor skills and language ability would be lost and even the sense of personal identity we all have would be absent. There are many different factors that contribute to memory failures but there are also ways to improve it.
Effective Instructions on Recall Abstract A study was conducted involving fifty students, randomly selected, that learned three lists of ten nouns. It was expected that the group receiving narrative instructions would score higher than the group receiving the repetition instructions. Two minutes was allowed for each list. The control group was assigned to learn the list of words by repeating them.

I am one of those common people, a student who is constantly learning and making the most of my memory. Since enrolling in The Psychology of Learning and Memory class I have come to the realization that I encounter situations in my life that exemplify the very concepts I have studied. I have also learned that it is beneficial to apply the lessons learned in class to my everyday life.
