Introduction Over the past decade, debates regarding the fast food industry occur frequently. Its substantial impact on the world has changed a way of life, specifically in the United States. The concept of the fast food industry was to create a method that would allow people to purchase cooked food at a faster rate than preparing a meal at home. This method was first introduced to deliver options to those who needed to chow down for lunch but did not have the availability to sit at a restaurant. Although this concept increasingly became famous for its low price and its aspects of social dining, most people are dependent on this method of eating for most of its meals. Most people are aware of its dangers it can have on someone’s health; however, fast foods’ marketing strategies allow companies to maintain it corporate power in the global economy. McDonald’s cost of food is the most important element of their business. If the price of the restaurants meals were to increase then the price sensitive customers would no longer gravitate to purchase McDonalds’ products. The restaurants inexpensive prices allow the company to beat out the competition. In the year 2013, a Big Mac would cost $3.60, whereas, a Baconator from Wendy’s would be $6.29 (Fast Food Menu Prices 2013). McDonald's offered only a nine-item menu with burgers, French fries, shakes, and pies. They also eliminated seating, and used paper and plastic utensils instead of glass and porcelain. McDonald’s has been around since 1940 and has taken off all over the world since then. McDonald’s is around almost everywhere people go and has changed the world in many different ways. Some ways are good, and some are of course bad. The main ways McDonald’s has made an impact on the world is the food causing obesity, Ronald Mcdonald Charity, and the convenience of the restaurant. Because of the McDonald brothers opening this restaurant, it has definitely changed America and the world we live in forever.
The purpose of this paper is to introduce you to the fast food industry, how it is everywhere in the United States and increasingly spreading globally. The majority of the fast food restaurants in the United States are dominated by hamburger fast food restaurants. Amongst the burger segment, McDonald’s is the number one leader in the burger industry, followed by Burger King, and Wendy’s respectively (Oches, 2011).
"Every responsible person understands what is in products such as hamburgers and fries, as well as the consequence to one's waistline, and potentially to one's health, of excessively eating those foods over a prolonged period of time” (Wald, 2003). This was a statement made by McDonald’s lawyers in 2003 during a court case in which McDonald’s was being sued for their failure to inform people of the nutritional value of their food. The vast majority of overweight or obese people in the United States have gotten that way due to a lack of care when it comes to the foods they eat, specifically fast food. The negative effects of fast food on health is widespread knowledge in the United States, but most people choose to ignore it and doing so has resulted in America being labelled as the ‘fattest country’ in the world. Some of these negative effects include a recent surge in obesity in both children and adults, food addiction that people are not aware that they have, and life-altering weight related sicknesses and diseases. A major player in these and many other negative things has been the fast food industry as a whole.
In terms of competition the three closest competitors together only control approximately 6% of the market (2% each) while McDonald’s holds about 19% of the fast food burger market. Whereas, Jack in the Box and Burger King have remained cyclical in terms of their menus outward growth (both companies menus are comprised of mainly burgers and fried items, with little to no healthy alternatives). On the other Hand, Wendy’s and McDonald’s have embraced the value of healthier menu items whether out of necessity or to avoid potential litigation in the future.
The main problem that McDonald’s faced was the fact that the food it served was mostly unhealthy. With the change in consumer mindset, people started looking for healthy alternatives and government imposed regulations on unhealthy foods. To deal with this the company should introduce healthier items in the menu while maintaining its USP of stellar service, low prices and low waiting times. This will help the company in retaining its customers and dealing with the change.
This research aims to determine customers’ perception on the nutrition labels of McDonalds food products and the influence of their digital innovations, advertisement, and cooperation on customers. To study how companies like McDonalds is reacting and giving their own decisions to this change in consumer behaviour and environment. This is an interesting topic to investigate as the company has a long history, considering the high debate about obesity, healthy eating, and new healthy style of life.

Although people may think they have delicious food, they do not know what they are actually consuming. McDonald's attracts their customers with cheap prices and convenience, creating easy access for people to buy food. McDonald's should offer healthier options because their food contains unhealthy chemicals, causes obesity, and risks disease.
