These are some of the barriers that I am facing now and have personally seen other women face as they grow in their careers. I have been tasked with many responsibilities, not all pleasant or things I would have asked for but my position forces me to take a position. I have heard, through the rumor mill, that I am only asked because I am liked by the CEO. And I will never be a good manager because I am “too nice”, and because I do not self-promote but instead praise group efforts. Most recently, considered to be a “bitch” or shown “betrayal” because I did not disclose confidential information to a friend/coworker, at times it feels that walking the line between each of those traits is thinner than a tightrope.

The average time off for maternity leave is 6 weeks, some take longer as allowed through FMLA and some take even less time. Many women feel that if they take longer under FMLA guidelines, the will be viewed as less serious about their career. However, if a person goes out on short term disability for any other reason for a duration similar to maternity leave, they come back to the same job with well wishes for a speedy recovery. The same time off does not equate to the same treatment upon return. Maternity leave in the business world is often interpreted as a shift in priorities and will then be overlooked for future considerations. As discussed earlier, women need to act neutral when it comes to gender roles and shouldn’t admit to their “mommy” role. Hiding this from coworkers spirals itself into a belief that women can not do both and not admitting to struggles continues the barrier for women staying in these top positions. Admitting to your full life and struggles that go along with it can show leaders and followers that you can have a family and still be committed to your career, we need to admit
