In 1943, Abraham Maslow stated that people are motivated to achieve certain needs. When Maslow was a child he was bullied by his own parents, this might have influenced his theory in the Hierarchy of Needs. His theory was the Hierarchy of Needs which explains how a person goes through different levels of needs. His theory is important and it is still used today. There are many examples seen every day that can prove this theory correct and some examples prove this theory wrong. Not everyone agrees with this theory in our world today.

His theory is a pyramid of all the needs a person will have in a certain order. For example a person has food, water, clothes, and shelter, this person will start looking for safety in their area or they will start looking for stability. The hierarchy of needs has made changes throughout the years but they still refer back to the original hierarchy of needs. Physiological needs are usually met for most people around the world. Safety needs are still trying to be met in foreign countries, for example, war. For people who reached love and belonging, they might be struggling to form strong relationships. People that are at esteem needs are probably still there, it is hard for most people to finish this need and reach self-actualization. It is rare for people to reach self-actualization before they pass on.
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is represents part of an important shift in phsycology. Most people who study phsycology look at people who have psychological problems. Maslow studied on people who are psychologically healthy. In a study published in 2011, researchers the University of Phoenix tested the hierarchy of needs. These researchers discovered that even though the fulfillment of these needs is important to happiness, people with different cultures reached self-actualization with some needs unfulfilled.
