Behind a Mask is a book that demonstrates the power a woman possesses. During a time in which those who are not rich are considered mere human beings, Louisa May Alcott creates a character by the name of Jean Muir who surpasses the society she lives in. Muir is a woman who seeks to have a prestigious title that will give her the recognition she desires. As governess to the Coventry family Muir puts in play a plan to marry Sir John, the old uncle in the family, whose title she wants. In the process of getting sir John’s tittle Jean causes controversy in between the family which results as a positive thing for the family as a whole. While stepping over the boundaries set by her society, Muir takes a journey which she must face with intelligence and courage.
Victor not being able to read made him dread going to school because his teacher would require students to read out loud. Victor states how having to read out loud was not his only fear but many other things as well. He was also extremely fearful of facing the world without his mother. That is another reason victor also hated staying at school because his mother could not stay with him. After a while, Victor learned soon enough to adapt to being without his mother, realizing that everything would be Ok. He also began to make friends at school, which helped him be a bit more comfortable at school. One of the boys he hung out with the most was his friend Ramón. This boy Ramon inspired and motivated Victor to become brave like him. In Chapter four we see an example of this where Victor states “I quit crying, just like that. My God, I couldn’t believe it, this boy Ramon had to be the bravest boy I had ever seen” (Villaseñor 64).Victor makes it clear about how he admires Ramon for his bravery and also refers to Ramon’s personality as his motivation for courage. I learned how Victor in this book changes from a young fearful boy to a brave gritty young man proud of his Mexican roots. Fear is a great motivator.
Young adult fiction is a unique area in its own way, and one that incorporates forms of lives not common in society. The book, Maze Runner is a typical example of adult fiction in which the author presents scenarios involving various forms of life, which readers can learn from and apply to their own, as well. To begin with, by reading this book in class, students will not only learn about magic and terror, but also about sorrow, bravery, friendship as well as suffering in attempts to find redemption. Everything about this book is fictional but subsequent events from previous ones make things even more real. In the essay “In Defense of Masks,” by Kenneth Gergen, he states how people do not “normally develop a coherent sense of identity” (Gergen 2). Gergen talks about how we as people may “experience severe emotional distress,” (Gergen 2) instead of having a set identity. The difference between the idea of multiple identities that are represented by masks and having a coherent sense of identity of one’s true self, is that having a coherent sense of identity means that a person stays the same in every situation and never changes. When George Eliot’s gothic story The Lifted Veil appeared in Blackwood’s in 1859, her partner George Henry Lewes was busy publishing his study of human anatomy, The Physiology of Common Life (1859). Intriguingly, this work of Lewes’s contains a brief tale which is as strikingly morbid as Eliot’s own. Unlike her story, his is not fictional — it is a scientific anecdote prefacing a detailed discussion of the respiratory system — but like The Lifted Veil its dark melodrama recommends it as “not a jeu d’esprit, but a jeu de melancolie.”[1] It concerns the case of a suicidal Frenchman, M. Déal, who, disillusioned by an unremarkable life and lack of reputation, resolves to exit the world in such a way as to remedy his perceived failings. To do so, he determines to asphyxiate himself on the poisonous fumes of burning charcoal while recording in a narrative the experience of his rapid demise. This testimony, he thinks, will be of much use to science, and so confer on him posthumously the intellectual dignity hitherto lacking in his life. Accordingly, he plans his suicide with the orderliness of an experimental scientist, as Lewes explains:

The colors, texture and shape of a costume can create a feeling of the character that the actor may not be able to portray. There is not any definite information on what exactly the Greeks used for costumes because so much time has elapsed since the original records were taken. Most information is based on the different artifacts that were found, such as paintings and pottery. Sometimes hints of what was worn could be found in the plays themselves.

Trying to fit in with the crowd, a mask is used to obtain the things we cannot reach on our own. Masks are especially common today because of the pressures to belong to the 'in'; group, or the pressures to succeed. Books, using masks, commonly show the many connotations of masks. They are used to find out what people are for real, on the inside of the mask. The imagery of masks is used throughout the book of Twelfth Night. Shakespeare uses the imagery of masks to reveal characters true emotions and to express the power of raw beauty. Shakespeare uses this imagery through all of his characters in the play, but especially the two characters of Viola and Feste.
