The Mars Pathfinder
Topic Sentence/Thesis Statement: The Mars Pathfinder was created to conduct specific experiments on Mars, but to also test a new atmospheric entrance method. It sent back more than 2.3 billion bits of data, which have shaped our understanding of Mars and its history.
Body Paragraphs
The Mars Pathfinder consisted of a lander and a lightweight robotic rover named Sojourner, in honor of Sojourner Truth, an African-American abolitionist and women’s rights activist.
It pioneered the Space age as the first mobile robot ever sent to another planetary body.
The Mars Pathfinder was developed by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, or NASA, which is an independent agency of the US Government.
It was developed at the

A warm and wet Mars could have sustained water. In current conditions, liquid water would either freeze or evaporate almost immediately due to the temperature and pressure on Mars.
It was originally designed to last from one week to one month.

The Mars Pathfinder tested a new atmospheric entry technique.
The spacecraft shed the heat shield during entry of Mars atmosphere, and then dropped, deploying a parachute. Air bags deployed 8 seconds before “landing”, and moments before landing rocket engines fired in an attempt to smooth the landing jolt.
The Pathfinder bounced at least 16 times before coming to a complete stop.
Miraculously, the spacecraft landed right side up, and fully functional.
“The Rover unstowed and exited the Lander petal via the rear ramp on the Second Martian day (sol).” (9)
The Mars Pathfinder had three main instruments. They are the Imager for the Mars Pathfinder, the Alpha Proton X-ray Spectrometer, and the Atmospheric Structure Instrument/Meteorology Package.
The Imager took images of the Martian surface, including
Tracy K. Smith’s “Life on Mars” is a collection of poetry dealing mainly in the search for a sense of purpose and the nature of people. The books is something of an elegy as a whole with many poems pertaining to death and the author’s struggle with the loss of her father. The poems are at once poignant and gentle in tone and leave questions than can only be answered in multiple readings. The book is segmented in four parts that travel through different topics and types of poetry. The mood ranges from passionate accounts of Orwellian politics to soft recollections of a lovers embrace; throughout the book Smith brings in references to pop culture, science, and technology that incorporate seamlessly with her words.
"One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind," said by Neil Armstrong as he took his first steps on the moon during the NASA Apollo 11 expedition to the moon. No man has ever been to the moon before and NASA, The National Aeronautics and Space Administration, was the first to get someone to land on the moon. NASA has had many great accomplishments in exploring the "new frontier" that have affected the United States ever since it was first created in July 1958. The idea for NASA first started when the Soviet Union launched the first satellite on October 4, 1957. United States started up its own space travel program and started to work on its own projects that would be better in than the Soviet Union's. This all started the great space race. It was a big race between the Soviet Union and the United States to see who could learn and discover the most. The United States and Soviet Union started building and sending satellites and space ships. Then they tried to see who could make a suit and ship that would be able to allow a living thing to go up in space. They tested out all of the equipment with monkeys and dogs, seeing what would work. Many animals did die in the process but by the results of their testing they were able to build suits and ships that allow human beings to go up in space. Even though they were able to create these machines, that doesn't mean that they didn't have their difficulties and dangers. Two space shuttles were crashed or blown up. There were many key factors that they had learned to fix that resulted in the crashing of those ships. They have made many discoveries and accomplishments like having the first astronauts walk on the moon.
In the story, "The View of Me From Mars," Lee K. Abott writes a story about a father and son relationship. In this story the father realizes that he isn't perfect and tries to have his son cover up his own mistake. Lee K. Abott, though being subtle, makes it known, through the characters he uses, that a person can't believe everything he sees. The author successfully enlightens the reader with his use of point of view, characterization, and theme to make the reader feel sympathy and to give the story credibility.
The spacecraft structure greatly influenced the impact of this mission on science history. The spacecraft itself weighed 503 kilograms, or 1,108 pounds. The fuel weighed twenty-nine kilograms, or sixty-four pounds. The adapter weighed thirty kilograms, or sixty-six pounds (Hamilton 1). Measuring the spacecraft diagonally resulted in 1.39 meters, or 4.56 feet. The depth measurements came out to .457 meters, or 1.5 feet (Hamilton 1). Two solar panels were strategically placed on top, both 2.7 meters, otherwise known as 8.86 feet, in perimeter measurements (Hamilton 1). This eight-sided spacecraft was also equipped wi...
Being human means having empathy and love for those, even when they may not like you back. In Gris Grimly's Frankenstein, Victor Frankenstein creates a being who tries to navigate life whilst making mistakes after he’d been abandoned by his creator. The creature experiences being rejected by many people and figures out how to live as an outcast even though he feels he belongs with others, making many mistakes as he goes. Victor Frankenstein’s creation is human, because throughout the book, he expresses his wants to be loved, and how he is able to understand human emotions and their language, which are human traits. The creature is undeniably human because he has a desire for someone to care for.
It was the beginning of the Space Race in 1958. The USSR, also known as the Soviet Union, had recently launched the first ever satellite, Sputnik 1. The Americans had already been planning the launch of a satellite, but this event accelerated the timeline. Immediately following the launch, the United States of America leaped into action with the creation of NASA on July 29, 1958. It would be a peaceful organization that would be responsible for and science and technology regarding space. Moreover, NASA then went on to create new technology that influenced everyday life, such as artificial limbs and CAT (computerized axial tomography) scans. In the past and present, NASA impacted the world by putting a man on the moon and now plans to
The ship needed water to cool systems, as well as the astronauts needed water to drink and hydrate the food they would eat. A lot of the food was deemed. They stretched the supply that they already had witch was supposed to last 45 hours but they made it last 90 . This is one of the compromises the astronauts had to give in order to survive the grueling trip to space and back. Another major issue was removing carbon dioxide from carbon dioxide from the capsule that the men would use to return to earth.
NASA New Frontiers is a program that is dedicated to deep observation of the solar system (discoverynewfrontiers.nasa.gov). Lockheed Martin is an advanced technology development company that built Juno for NASA (lockheedmartin.com). Though Lockheed Martin did build the spacecraft, Juno’s parts were gathered from all over the world (missionjuno.swri.edu). Juno was also tested in designated rooms to see if Juno could withstand the possible conditions of its trip and if it would need to be adjusted.
There is, however, rising speculation that Mars currently holds ice and possibly flowing water in certain areas on and under the surface. Because of the surface conditions, the water would evaporate very quickly and not be directly visible from space, along with the possible exception of the polar caps, which will be discussed later. Almost all researchers and scientists believe that there is ice on Mars, but the trick is to find it and use it to our benefit.
INTRODUCTION In the year 1999, NASA lost its two major missions to Mars. Mars Climate Orbiter (MCO) and Mars Polar Lander (MPL) were part of a bigger project Mars Surveyor Program (MSP) that began in 1994. Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) was the first part of this project, launched in 1996 and ended in January 2007. This report discusses the Mars Polar Lander with two Deep Space 2 probes, on board with MPL, and the most probable causes that may have led to MPL failure.
Orion spacecraft was launched successfully. According to NASA.gov, the space craft flew 3,600 miles above the earth and circled two times around the planet. During it’s trip, Orion travelled 15 times higher than the International Space Station, which is orbiting the earth 260 miles into space. While it was up there, Orion took some pictures of our planet. After a 4 and a half hour journey, it splashed down in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Baja California.
In 1958 a group known as The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) was founded. The first probe to escape Earth's gravity was the Soviet LUNA 1, launched on Jan. 2, 1959. It passed the Moon and continued into interplanetary space. The U.S. probe Pioneer 4, launched two months later, followed the same path. Later Soviet probes either hit the Moon or passed it and took photographs of the hidden far side, relaying them back to Earth.
Rover was founded when Lord Austin founded the Austin Motor Company which merged with Morris and Rover in 1952 to create British Motor Corporation. Rover has faced a series of mishandled rescue attempts, frequent ownership changes and ever declining performance but never secured long-term viability. In 1968, Harold Wilson engineered the merger of Leyland, Rover’s parent company with British Motor Corporation to create a giant national champion in the industry but the merged giant was forced into a rights issue in 1972 and collapsed in after the oil price shock of 1974.
In Aphra Behn's “The Rover,” characters define relationships as a type of economy where value and use are key. This time period commodified love and sexuality, valuing financial success over meaningful relationships. The dowry system made rich women with a high status most desirable for marriage and their value was increased by their honor. Typical of seventeenth century literature, Behn plays with this ideology as “the language of love in Restoration comedies frequently draws on the language of commerce.”1 She expresses her beliefs on the “'interest,' 'credit,' and 'value'”2 associated with love and sexuality through the different prices placed on her characters. Where Behn differs from other seventeenth century writers is that she does not give in to the “world dominated by male writers working in specifically misogynistic forms.”3 She gives women the authority within this economy. Instead of having very little power in their relationships with men, Behn allows women to be dominant. They can create their own value and control the amount of access men have to them. Characters such as Moretta and Angellica Bianca are not forced into submission by their desire for marriage, they “ignore[s] patriarchal structure and exhibit[s] no remorse.”4 They force men into submission through their manipulation of the economy of love and sexuality. Aphra Behn's characterization of Moretta and Angellica Bianca using the language of commerce gives them authority that other woman did not have access to.
Using an extraction technique that involves a repetition of evaporation and condensing to produce stored water. We will have plenty of water to use for consumption and growth of food. Over the 1000-year time process, we will have to start changing the atmosphere of Mars to make it breathable for humans. Mars’ atmosphere contains 0.15 percent oxygen, which is not nearly enough.... ... middle of paper ...
