The company, formed when US-based Walgreen Co. bought its European counterpart Alliance Boots. Walgreens employs more than 350,000 people and operates more than 13,200 retail pharmacies (or chemists in some parts of the world) in 11 countries. Additionally, the company has more than 390 pharmaceutical distribution centers, delivering to pharmacies, doctors and hospitals in more than 20 countries. In September 2017, after more than two years of unsuccessful merger attempts, Walgreens completed its purchase of 1,932 Rite Aid stores and three distribution centers. Ownership of the stores will be gradually handed over, with the full transfer expected to be completed by spring 2018. However, since this deal occurred after Walgreen's fiscal 2017 year-end, changes in revenue will likely not be apparent until 2018.

The segment operates more than 4,700 stores across the Boots brand as well as Benavides in Mexico and Ahumada in Chile. Boots stocks over 35,000 products, and offers around 637 in-store and standalone optical services alongside its retail and pharmacy operations. In contrast to Retail Pharmacy USA pharmacy/retail share distribution where the bulk of sales came from pharmacy, most of Retail Pharmacy International’s sales come from their retail division, 65%, with the rest coming from pharmacy. The division’s profitability is impacted by governmental agencies and other 3rd party payers. Governmental agencies provide funding to pharmacies in the UK and that funding varies year to year. For fiscal year 2018 the UK government is looking to reduce costs and one way is to cut funding to pharmacies.
