Most students are now fighting for more freedom in schools, rebelling against rules enforced by the authority. One of the most controversial topics most students fight for is the dress code. Although one may argue that the dress code is a violation of a citizen’s right to freedom of expression, it is a necessary component for the teens in high school because students must learn discipline and concentrate on learning. Nonetheless, the objective of the student’s education and success for future triumphs over the sacrifice a student make with his or her clothing. One of the reason why schools need to enforce dress code is that discipline is essential for future success. This means that a student should know how to dress properly for different …show more content…
The most common and obvious explanation for this reason is the hormones. The desires aroused in teenagers are considered normal, but by allowing both gender to wear clothing that shows excessive skin, such as shorts, spaghetti straps, tank tops, see-through fabrics, it encourages opposite sexes to thing about things other than what they should be thinking about. Even though many argue that shoulders and legs are something everyone is accustomed to already, the dress code should be in place in order to maintain the amount of flesh exposed as little as possible and to discourage such deviations in everyone’s mind. Another explanation for this reason is the comfort of a person and the peer pressure from the environment. Everyone is more or less insecure about their bodies. If a person is wearing a tight clothing for example, it is not going to be comfortable sitting for an hour in a class. Instead of thinking about the lesson the teacher is talking about, the student will think about his or her discomfort. Peer pressure is the most common distraction in schools. Many students worry about fitting in, and some students feel the pressure to wear revealing clothes they believe are immoral for them. The dress code is a more legible reason for them to use rather than being seen as a person who is …show more content…
Students feel that they should be allowed to wear whatever they want, and they believe that clothing is one the most prominent ways of expressing their personalities. One must keep this in mind: school is a place of learning and not fashion. If a person is really ambitious to express his or her feelings and personalities, one is given many chances to do so: essays, art, projects, communication, and problem solving skills. The style of clothing is not the only way a person can express; the style of their facial expression and verbal communication also work the same function. One may also argue that dress code would not allow the student to stand out with their differences and their uniqueness among their peers, making them look like robots. A person does not need a sense of fashion to stand out; a mind blowing essay, a confident personality, a kind spirit, a competitive nature, and an aggressive ambition will make any student stands out. Think of a soccer team: they all wear the same uniform, but how come one player stand out more than the others? It is not because of his or his clothing; it is because of one’s aura that is resulted from his or her ambition and talents. Dress code allows the talents and nature of each student to become more prominent and allows the students to discover and practice their skills to express themselves in more professional
Dress codes will create a positive learning environment for kids. “Many educators believe that a dress code also promotes a positive educational environment.” (Wilder 1) “Dress codes will help to instill student discipline, helping to resist peer pressure, helping students concentrate on academics and aiding in recognition of intruders.” (Wilder 2). “Students reported there was an improved sense of belonging and tolerance when a dress code was implemented.”
However, there are still numerous of students who believe that uniforms should be legitimized. For example, Belinda Luscombe wrote in the article, “How Ugly School Uniforms Will Save Education,” ‘ that nothing says, “this is not all about you,” more than an ugly uniform.’ This shows how much wearing a uniform limits your capability to feel unique and different. On the other hand, Kokemuller proclaimed, “This criticism is particularly valid if a school wants a creative, expressive culture where students are free to think critically. Uniforms encourage and reflect sameness.” So how is it that a uniform can captivate a person 's thoughts and freedom and still be accepted in schools where students are meant to be openminded? As students, like you and me, are told to be diverse when at the same time we are indicated to be the same? For the most part, uniforms, as previously stated, should not be part of our, already diverse,
Dress code enforces the modest dress of students, preventing bullying and distractions.Numerous people believe clothing is a distraction and when eliminated the school environment is more professional and gives a better education to a student. Authority figures consider the school apparel enforcements are constitutionally sound, not affecting the child’s right to freely express, and providing a professional and working setting causing a better learning environment and decreased amount of bullying due to clear differences in appearance. However, opposers disagree with the restrictive code because of its limitations on individuality
America’s school systems seem to have many issues concerning students receiving a quality education without distraction. A current debate argues weather a dress code policy is efficient or takes away from student’s expression. Administrators at schools should regulate a dress code policy because the system improves discipline and student’s attention, reduces social conflict and peer pressure related to appearance, and dress code provides a more serious learning environment.
In School Uniforms confidence is hard to find in an ugly uniforms. A lot of confidence is found in trying to be unique, people wear things they feel comfortable and confident in. Teachers are always saying how important it is to just be ourselves and not worry about what others might (“I believe”). If were going to make kids wear uniforms at least make it to wear its something everyone is comfortable with, it's understandable that it’s suppose to be professional but, its easier to have just a dress code because, then everyone is happy. Why should people stand in the way of a students fashion choices, people shouldn't discriminate against them, people always say it’s what's on the inside that counts not what’s on the outside. Clothing is a major way in which human beings, especially with teens, communicate their personalities to the world without having to speak or perform physical behaviors (Christopher). Students already have so many things ta...
High school is typically a time when kids begin to distinguish themselves from one another. Students begin to develop their own sense of personal style, desperately trying to both fit in and stand out simultaneously. Being self-conscious and often lacking the confidence needed to assert themselves, teens are forced to use clothing and outward appearance as the means to manifest this individuality. Thus, students should not be forced to wear uniforms to school. Standard uniforms are unproven deterrents to student violence; are a "Band-Aid" to cover up the real problems faced by children and teens; and they violate students' right of self-expression, depriving them of their search for identity.
Students should be able to express themselves through clothing at school”(Cates). No matter if the clothes they want to wear are comfortable or dress up clothes, it shouldn’t matter, and kids should not be teased for wearing comfortable clothes. Some families don’t have as much money as others, so they have to go to stores where they can find the cheapest clothes, and sometimes the condition they have to get those clothes in sometimes may not follow dress code. Poor families also may not be able to afford the cost of uniforms. Both dress codes
When students are not wearing uniforms, students are tending to act the way they are dressed for school. Uniforms are to help students to focus and do better in school and outside of school. School outfits are one of several demands factors that influence learning. It allows students to look more formal on their personality and not how they are dress. Students are allowed determined what is expected at school and the freedom they have outside of school in fashion. It also helps learners to be more discipline in their education and keep them from distractions as clothe design competition to each other. The National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) and Asia-Pacific Economics Blog (APECSEC) statistics have shown that uniforms impacted in classroom discipline of 85 percent and 44 percent of attendance ( School Uniforms Pros and Cons 5) and (National Assoclation of Elementary School Principle 1-2). When school system is not demand for students to wear uniforms and represent the school, sometime students are not willing to attend classes. Professor Scott
At the beginning of the 20th century almost no parent or faculty had any concerns with how students dressed to attend school. Nowadays, though, this is a giant concern among students, parents, and school board officials. Many arguments have been made over the matter saying uniforms should be required and enforced in schools. But, uniforms should not be required as they ultimately eliminate freedom of expression, promote conformity over individuality, may have a detrimental effect on students self image, emphasize the socioeconomic divisions they are supposed to eliminate, and lastly, school uniforms in public schools undermine the promise of a free education by adding an extra expense for families.
Worrying more about others, rather than themselves, students pay more attention to the appearance of their peers instead of their academics. To begin, if school uniforms became apart of the school policy, students’ academics would improve phenomenally. Hanley noted that “The reason for the policy [was] to further improve ascending test scores and provide a safe, comfortable learning environment” (A1+). Clearly, school administrators wanted to improve test scores, and they figured if students dressed the same, then they would have no other choice but to focus on their school work. If the students can concentrate on their school work, then they will have high self- esteem. Furthermore, Valdez believes that school uniforms, positively, will change student academics: “… [they] decrease self consciousness and increase self esteem...” (14). Reasonable and realistic, students who feel better about themselves will succeed in school rather than those who have poor self-esteem. Not only do school uniforms encourage students to have a better attitude about themselves, but they also change the environment in which students learn....
By requiring school uniforms in public schools, education will be improved. A dress code will enforce discipline toward learning. Uniforms improve a person’s outlook toward success. Students generally act the way they are dressed. With fewer distractions, students see the school as a workplace for teaching and learning. Students also have less stress in their lives because they are not in a fashion competition. Dress codes also lead to a change in grades. Mainly this happens because the student’s attendance comes up. There is also a change in grades because it is easier to focus when everyone looks alike.
Choosing what to wear for the day. This is what most students are thinking about when they wake up. Students need the latest fashion in order to fit in, but some clothing may not be acceptable to wear in school. School dress codes are denying students their right to dress how they want, but the dress code is important for the students and their learning. Students are beginning to stand up and want to be heard. Some students are taking action and want the dress code to become less strict but some schools are doing the opposite for safety issues and for the students healthy learning environment. Dress codes are important for a strong and healthy learning environment and is also reducing violence in many schools around the country.
Clothing also allows a student to show they pride they have in their body. Regardless if they decide to dress
Some regard that school uniforms influence the way students analyze problems, understand work, and dedicate themselves to situations. However, a simple alteration in clothing does not determine or change the frame of mind, but rather it is the character of that individual that helps to produce the
A dress code enforces discipline toward learning by changing a person’s attitude toward success. Students generally act the way they are dressed. With fewer fashion distractions, school will be seen as a priority for teaching and learning rather than trend competitions. This alteration leads to modification in grades because it’s much easier to focus when everyone is dressed alike. Furthermore, a student’s attendance also improves; with the relief of picking out a new outfit every morning.
