Managing a Crisis Using Public Relations
Handling Public Relations for any organization can be a very difficult
task in any circumstance - even under simple, non-crisis situations.
When a crisis strikes, that's when PR managers really have their work
cut out for them. A PR manager must always be prepared for the
inevitable crisis to happen because that is when their jobs are really
tested by the public and the organization. American Wattage
Corporation was planning to launch 'Greenergy' by Green Energy which
focuses on creating a better solution to energy than electricity by
using wind energy. My job as the PR manager was to formulate
strategies to manage a crisis and make the most effective use of PR
tools to communicate with all the publics. In this paper, I will give
a summary of the simulation and how I handled the different tasks that
were given to me as well as go into detail on how crisis management
should really be handled.
As the PR manager of Green Energy, my first task was to determine how
to allocate my budget of $1 million to formulate a PR plan that would
encompass all relevant aspects of corporate communications. I chose
several ways in which to spend the budget allowed for PR ? I spread
them out in four different categories: research team setup plan, media
relations plan, marketing and PR advertising plan, and crisis
management and communication plan.
My second task was to handle a crisis that injured people because of
our equipment. What message did the company want to communicate about
the crisis to the public? Prior to reading week 4?s text, I chose that
we would say ?No comment? because I thought it would be better to
gather all the facts first then go to the public with the information.
I will explain later in the paper why I should not have chosen that
route. My third task was deciding on whether to come clean about what
really happened on how those people were injured by the equipment. I
decided to use great publicity choosing to do a major communication
exercise and come completely clean which was the correct choice
because that act alone could help restore credibility for the company.
Handling a crisis can be very difficult for a company ? but what
exactly qualifies as a crisis? According to Seitel (2004), a crisis is
a ?situation that has reached a critical phase for which dramatic and

...004). The most effective crisis
communicators are those who provide prompt, frank, and full
information to the media in the ?eye of the storm? (Seitel, 2004).
Silence not only angers the media but also compounds the problem. The
quick rule to effective public relations communication is to ?tell it
all and tell it fast? (Seitel, 2004). When information gets out
quickly, this stops or minimizes rumors and nerves are calmed. The
basic goals of crisis management are: 1) terminate the crisis quickly,
2) limit the damage, and 3) restore credibility. Following these goals
will ensure a successful public relations plan for any organization.
Crisis management definitely needs to be addressed in any organization
? although it is usually not a fun role for the public relations
manager. However, if the appropriate steps are taken on how to handle
crises, this will ensure the public that the organization can still be
trusted no matter the situation. In the end, that really is the
ultimate goal ? to be sure credibility is restored in the
organization.

In the chapter entitled “The Public Presidency Communications and Media,” Matthew Eshbaugh-soha argues that media coverage is extremely essential for presidential governance. However, it is challenging to control and adjust to serve presidential purposes, for it is driven by different motives. A president’s goal is to increase coverage surrounding him to obtain support for his policies, while the media wants to sell the best headlines to increase their profit. Eshbaugh-soha argues that even though presidents have developed different tactics to maximize their media coverage, they often face failures in doing so. In this chapter, Eshbaugh-soha analyzes the different mythologies, through which presidents attempt to increase their communication with the public. He accomplishes that by examining specific examples and statistics from different presidential eras, as well as these mythologies’ successes and limitations overall.
Sahlins in his scholarship “Historical Metaphors and Mythical Realities” attempted to explain culture using past events and that historians should do the same. He also attempted to show that culture is not static but always changing and developing. Sahlins used the culture of Hawaii and shows how interaction with Europe (specifically Britain) changed and helped develop their culture. Shalin’s argued that Hawaiian’s response to Captain Cook’s arrival on their territory, such as treating him as a God and offering their women as sexual objects and other factors leading up to Cook’s murder was part of Hawaiian culture.
As the 10th anniversary of the September 11 attacks approaches, it is surprising and somewhat disconcerting that the United States is still struggling with how to employ strategic communication (SC). Many believe the main reason the US is losing the global war of ideas and the war on terror itself is directly related to its inability to effectively communicate and XX. Making gains in the war on terror will not come from kinetic actions alone. “In order to be successful, it’s important for our messages to be coordinated – quick and credible. They must speak to the conscience of people around the world.” Unfortunately, the U.S. military hasn’t been overly successful in this arena. There is much work to be done to improve SC efforts within the Department of Defense (DoD).
Faith is something a person must have inside them to be able to succeed. Success and failure are two completely different things, but faith is what separates the two. In the short story “A Fable with Slips of White Paper Spilling from the Pockets” by Kevin Brockmeier, the author illustrates the struggles a man must overcome in society and the obstacles he must overcome when his faith is tested to the limit. In the fable, the author uses symbols of faith, magical elements, and realistic struggles to divulge the morals and struggles of life.
One fateful afternoon in 2011, David Daigle, Associate Communication Director, at the Center for Disease Control (CDC), purchased eighty-seven dollars worth of zombie related stock photography – convinced that this would be the key to engaging a young and media savvy audience in a conversation about disaster preparedness. Daigle concluded – based on his personal affinity to zombie culture – that there are a similarities to the items one would need in a disaster kit and to those necessary to survive a zombie attack and that this unique connection would be relevant to a zombie crazed society.
Headaches happen when there is a continuous pain in the cranial area (Huether, 2004). Moreover, headaches happen when the nerve endings in the brain detect pain. Usually the pain can originate from the nerves and muscles of the head and neck and also from the meninges or the covering of the brain. Frequent bouts of headaches can lead to lack of concentration due to the pain which can impede in productivity in the work place and also academically.
ComEd appears to have thoroughly analyzed social media best practices before it embarked on its own social media program. However, it decided to place the responsibility for social media within its own customer operations rather than in its communications or marketing department. Was this is a good decision- why or why not?
In the story “The Monkey’s Paw”, The White family discovers what harms can come from greed and the power to get whatever you wanted. This story highlights the reason’s why it is better to be happy rather than to have power or to be rich, or to try to get loved ones back from the grave, the story also touches on the idea of great power comes great responsibility, as well topic of heeding others advice when matters get rough or bad in your favor.
Twitter has grabbed attention of a variety of professions from sports analysts to business executives. Twitter can be used to share information, provide advice, and promote events. The multiple ways Twitter is used is very similar to the duties of a public relations professional. Although Twitter is used to supplement the tools that are already available for PR professionals, twitter is a great way to accommodate practices exorcised during the proactive stage of the conflict management life cycle. Many PR professional and agencies have started to merge Twitter in everyday practice. In particular, Landis Communication, Simply Zesty, and Bill Stoller have taken advantage of Twitter to further their work in the public relations field. While monitoring the three twitter accounts a distinctive pattern in the information shared presented a direct connection with the three subcategories of the proactive stage.
Food has been a common source of necessity in our everyday lives as humans. It helps gives us nutrition and energy to live throughout our life. Over several decades, the development of making foods has evolved. They have changed from natural to processed foods in recent years. Nowadays natural ingredients are barely used in the making of foods like bread, cheese, or yogurt. The food industry today has replaced natural food making with inorganic ingredients. The cause of this switch is due to processed foods being easier, cheaper and faster to make. Artificial nutrition and processed foods have been proven to last longer in market shelves then natural foods. Also, due to artificial additives in processed foods they help satisfy consumers taste more than natural ingredients. The method of producing processed foods is common in today's food industry and helps make money faster and efficiently for companies. Examples of this can be found in all markets that distribute food. Even though processed foods may be easier and faster to make, they are nowhere near as healthy for consumers compared to natural foods. Natural foods are healthier, wholesome, and beneficial to the human body and planet then processed foods.
What is Public Relations (PR)? PR is difficult to define because it encompasses so many areas and today has developed into a multi-million dollar industry influencing all aspects of our lives (Adams et al, 1999). However, it is important to be able to compare and contrast the various definitions in order to have a complete understanding of what public relations is and how it is used. The public is a large population to consider, making it easier to understand why it is so difficult to define PR. Along with a large population come many perceptions, beliefs, ideas, and opinions, all influences on PR. I define public relations as the act/s used by individuals, corporations, and groups to influence ones opinions and/or decisions about a product, idea, person/s, company/s, etc. and the public. Robert L. Heath defines PR as functions of management/supervisors that foster an organization's ability to strategically listen to, appreciate, and respond to those persons who's mutually beneficial relationships with the organization are necessary if it is to achieve its missions and values (Health, 2007)'.
Social media has become both popular and crucial in crisis and emergency communications. Responders are not only communicating to their public through social media outlets, the public is communicating with each other, and with responders. Individuals are able to provide important information on disaster impacts, including location and imagery, using nothing more than a smartphone equipped with a camera and GPS locator. One particular technology from Ushahidi offers an interesting way for responders and affected individuals to communicate with one another in the course of a disaster response. The Ushahidi BRCK offers an application of technology that, while not originally designed for use in the emergency management field, has an application in the response to a disaster. This and other technologies contribute to the ever changing way responders and individuals communicate.
Different ranges is by all accounts with the new media, including the properties of new media itself, attributes of using new media, mixed media impact, and new media innovation, research on media change and how all these mix together. Social media contribute to significant changes within corporate arenas of citizenship (Whelan, Moon, & Grant, 2013). It has be said that information and communication technologies establishments retain significant capabilities with which to empower individual inhabitants to partake within public arenas of social conscience. Accordingly, our argument is not that social media make citizens, individually and/or collectively, more powerful than corporations and their stakeholders.
Food safety is a scientific concept that describes how to handle, prepare, store in order to avoid from food born and harzard (Richard A. Sprenger, 2012). There is three big reasons for food safety. One is about the money. Illnesses from foods occur billions in each year in average at every USA’s states and also for people who run food related business, the financial damage could be a lot. Secondly, it can preserve the food’s quality at the peak. S...
