Management is black and white and leadership is the gray area. It takes thought and understanding of yourself before you can begin to understand another person or a group people and lead them in the right direction. We must be cognizant that although we may have a clear vision and plan to accomplish the mission it is not the only plan that may work. It is not necessarily the one that always has a different plan that is against you; it just may be that their personality type differs from yours which may seem to be in contradiction to yours. Two things that Marines will never be accused of and that is having a lack of personality and a sense of structure. I find myself managing those personalities on a daily basis being the authoritarian at times and passive aggressive the other but still trying to please the majority. I have found weakness in my personality type. I often come off as too playful because I don’t believe that most work situations should be serious and as a result I may be perceived as not recognizing to some the severity of a problem. The needing to please or fix a problem now has led me to be overly involved and sometime to close to the situation to be able to give objective opinions. As a very senior enlisted Marine I must remain objective in order to render clear guidance to those I serve and serve with. I have often had to remind myself not to take over when I sense that the group is not working in the direction I originally intended for them to go. Step 2 I took the this personality test 5 years ago and I received that same results back then which pleases me because I do appreciate the consistency but I failed to understand what the two main letter in my personality trait (SP) really meant as I interact with other personalities. I believe that if I accomplished the mission, in the time prescribed and I did not violate any order or commit any gross negligence then the team and I are successful. Being a leader is not a small feat. A leader must gather, than motivate a group for a common goal which may pose as a difficult task at times. Various personality types will deal with conflicts within a group in diverse ways. Humans are engrained with the fight or flight reflex. A person’s personality may shape their conflict resolution skills and improve relationships within a group. To be an effective leader an individual must be mindful of their personality; this will enable them to become more comfortable when dealing with conflict within their group. A beneficial tool called the DISC personality assessment which is based on the theory of psychologist William Marston (1928). This theory was established between four different personality traits which include: Dominance, Inducement, Submission, and Compliance. A leader can learn to use their personality to resolve an inevitable conflict within a group.
As an officer in the United States Army, it has been imperative for me to understand every facet of leadership and why it remains important to be an effective leader. During this course, I have learned some valuable lessons about myself as a leader and how I can improve on my leadership ability in the future. The journal entries along with the understanding of available leadership theories have been an integral part of my learning during this course. For all of the journals and assessments that I completed, I feel it has given me a good understanding of my current leadership status and my future potential as a leader. All of the specific assessments looked at several areas in regards to leadership; these assessments covered several separate focus areas and identified my overall strengths and weaknesses as a leader. Over the course of this paper I will briefly discuss each one of these assessments and journal entries as they pertained to me and my leadership.

These five traits have been identified as the most identifiable personality traits, even across cultures and societies. According to McCrae, Costa, and Busch’s (1986) study on personality system comprehensiveness, the big five personality model included the five traits most identified with by individuals asked to describe themselves and others. I found this segment of the class especially intriguing as it helped me not only learn so much about myself, but also take a deeper look into the personality of my family, peers, and even strangers. I am also more conscious of how I self-monitor my personality traits. For example, I am very much so an introverted person but at times I try to be extroverted based off the environment. In highly social environments, I consciously smile and try to talk to people because I want to be perceived in a favorable light, not actually because I feel the need to be sociable. In other words, I don’t want to be perceived as odd. I believe I developed this form of self-monitoring because when I am introverted at social events people will constantly ask me if I’m ok since I’m quiet, which makes me uncomfortable as they make me the focus. Being the center of attention makes me anxious, and therefore to prevent that I have developed being a fake-extrovert to avoid it. This exemplified how I apply self-monitoring to my everyday life. I believe I have the capacity to maintain work stress and stay positive. It is because I am a positive thinker. From my experience, when I was perceiving inequity or facing stresses from work, I tried to restore equity by extra effort and stay focused on my goal. Therefore, these personality traits help me become a team player. Besides, I have high ethical standards which drives me to embody integrity in my actions. Honesty, integrity are very important personality traits to managers because they have responsibility of financial stewardship. Managers who has high ethical standards are likely to establish a code of ethic to guide team members’ behavior and less likely to manipulate shareholders’ assets.
