Magical Realism as a World View
Magical Realism is the way in which a person views the world through a type of art. Magical realism deals with emotions, and it also discovers what is mysterious and meaningful in life. According to Franz Roh, in painting, is the way a person views the world through art (18, 20). Magical Realism has many characteristics that include many other ideas. Magical Realism can be observed in other subject areas, too, such as the logotherapy of Victor Frankl.
Simpkins mentioned that "real life" is the "Real magic" (152). He also said that realism is heightened by magic (148-152). However, Leal felt that Magical Realism focuses on the marvelous in the real (122). Amaryll Chanady feels that Magical Realism is focused more toward reality (131).
In Victor Frankl's novel Man's Search for Meaning, Frankl discusses finding this magic in life in what he calls will-to-meaning. Frankl, a twentieth century psychiatrist, states that "life ultimately means taking responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual" (122). This concept is what he called will-to-meaning. Some forms of will-to-meaning are hunger, humiliation, fear, and deep anger at injustice (8). Some importance of will-to-meaning is that he had to find a sense of responsibility in his existence (9).
One of the characteristics from will-to-meaning was finding responsibility. In the story Like Water for Chocolate, a magical realist story, a girl named Tita found her circumstances so awful that she found the meaning in her cooking and gave responsibility for life. She was always getting her heart broken because she loved a man named Pedro and could not be with him. Therefore, she learned to have a responsibility for cooking. She could have rebelled and left, but she knew that she had a responsibility to cook for her family and the man whom she loved. Tita found magic in her circumstances and viewed the mundane as beautiful helping her to live successfully in these terrible circumstances.

Magical realism happens to be one of the rarer yet more intriguing genres of film. In order to be classified as magical realism, the movie in question must have fantastical elements interwoven in the overarching plot which takes place in a realistic setting. A movie which masterfully encapsulates the essence of magical realism is del Toro's 2006 film Pan's Labyrinth (or El Laberinto del Fauno, as it was originally intended.) It perfectly incorporated moments of fiction amongst the real hardships faced by the young protagonist Ofelia.

This writer has learned that the author of this book never explains the logic of the time travel, which fits within the magical realist journey. Instead, what matters are the lessons he learns through his transformations. The book works almost like a fairy-tale, in that a mystical or supernatural situation occurs in order to teach the character something. It is important to note, however, that there is evidence that the transformations were more than simply hallucinations. One could argue that Zits, an imaginative and troubled narrator, might have tricked himself into believing his own stories, except that his disappearance from the tape remains unexplained.
Marquez's "A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings" fulfills every characteristic of Magical Realism. His short story contains magic that exists in a realistic background. One can easily see why Marquez is such a forerunner in the field of Magical Realism.
In order to see how Magical Realism is found in this treatment, one must first consider at least one of the identifying marks of Magical Realism. Among the characteristics that identify Magical Realism is the feeling of transcendence that the reader has while reading a Magical Realist text (Simpkins 150). During transcendence, a reader senses something that is beyond the real world. At the same time, however, the reader still feels as if he or she were rooted in the world (Sandner 52). After the reader undergoes transcendence, then he or she should have a different outlook on life.

Magical realism is clearly present throughout Gabriel-Garcia Marquez's novel Chronicle of a Death Foretold. Magical realism is the juxtaposition of realism with fantastic, mythic, and magical elements. A secondary trait was the characteristic attitude of narrators toward the subject matter: they frequently appeared to accept events contrary to the usual operating laws of the universe as natural, even unremarkable. Though the tellers of astonishing tales, they themselves expressed little or no surprise.
The story “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez is an example of magic realism. Magic realism is defined as “a fiction often associated with Latin America that interweaves realistic and fantastic details, juxtaposing the marvelous with the ordinary” (1741). It involves fantastic elements combined in a realistic setting making it hard to differentiate both. “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” contains non-rational elements such as a very old man with enormous wings (also known as the angel), a tarantula the size of ram and with the head of a sad maiden, an acrobat whose wings are of the sidereal bat, a blind man grew three new teeth and a leper whose sores sprouted sunflowers.
