Magical realism happens to be one of the rarer yet more intriguing genres of film. In order to be classified as magical realism, the movie in question must have fantastical elements interwoven in the overarching plot which takes place in a realistic setting. A movie which masterfully encapsulates the essence of magical realism is del Toro's 2006 film Pan's Labyrinth (or El Laberinto del Fauno, as it was originally intended.) It perfectly incorporated moments of fiction amongst the real hardships faced by the young protagonist Ofelia.
