Lynda Barry’s “The Sanctuary of School”, discusses how the education system can be an escape for children with troubled home lives. Barry experienced this in her childhood and found herself sneaking out of her home one night because of an urgent feeling that she needed to be at school. Luckily for Barry her school was close to home and had a wonderful staff that didn’t question why she was there. Barry found comfort in her school it was somewhere she was safe and listened too. She could paint, or draw in art class which is usually a class overlooked in school budgets. Barry’s purpose is to express that school is vital to some children’s lives and gives them a sanctuary that they do not have at home.
I really enjoyed this essay because Barry was able to express her feelings about school systems because of her own experiences. She relied on the structure of her school because that wasn’t something she had at home. I think that it ultimately gets her point across in a very effective way. We read her experience and it

A line in the essay that really spoke to me because of its raw, and unnerving honesty is,” We all know that a good education system saves lives, but the people of this country are still told that cutting the budget for public school is necessary, that poor salaries for teachers are all we can manage and that art, music and all creative activities must be the first to go when times are lean.” (859). I agree highly with the ideas in this essay.
Barry feels that school systems should be given more financing for the overall benefit of the students. Society now a day tends to neglect school systems because of technology and family lives. Barry wants us to understand that not all children get to learn at home. Home isn’t always a peaceful place for some children it can be hell. For those kid’s school is a sanctuary and a place that always has structure and someone to listen to you. Barry feels that one of the best ways for troubled children to let out their feelings is through a form of art and unfortunately art, and music classes tend to be the first to get cut out of school budgets. I highly agree that school is a hide away for some kids and they should be allowed to express themselves there in many ways. School is a place for them to learn and grow and school systems need money to allow the children to have opportunities to do
so. This essay spoke to me in so many ways. Growing up in a small town you tend to see how budget cuts do more than just affect the school the affect the children. I watched so many of my peers who had bad home lived blossom and come alive in school, especially in art classes. It’s really a way for them to escape and forget what’s going on at home. Luckily my school had an amazing boys and girls club for after school and many of my friends went to it. They didn’t have to go home and be alone or listen to parents fighting. They could do their homework, draw, and play with their friends. I think that watching how much school helped my friends always made me wish that my school had more funding to support all of its students. It’s just very difficult to get the help from the county or state that we truly need. This essay couldn’t have rung more truthful to me when it said, “We are told in a thousand ways that not only are public schools not important, but that the children who attend them, the children who need them most, are not important either.” (860). When truthfully our education system is teaching our children how to become our future.
Pashtana said she would rather die than not go to school and acted on her words. Her education is limited and she doesn’t have all the recourses to make school easier, yet she still loves and wants all the knowledge she can get. While I sit in my three story private school, a clean uniform free of holes or loose seams, my macbook air in my lap, the smell of cookies rising up from the cafeteria, wishing to be anywhere else but there. No one has beat me because I want to go to school, no one has forced me into a marriage, I’ve never put my life in jeopardy for the sake of education. Pashtana’s life and choices made me take a moment to stop and reflect on my own life and how fortunate I am to have what I have.
Parental involvement often acts as a buffer for poor education as it leads to higher elementary school achievement, lower high school dropout rates, and more time time spent on homework (Morris, class lecture, May 3, 2016). While it is true that MacDonald’s mother Helen allowed her children to boycott school for a period of time, she was quite involved in her children’s education and lives as a whole. From the time they were young, Helen MacDonald instilled the importance of education upon her many children. When Michael Patrick MacDonald was five years old, his mother began to take classes at Suffolk University where she was studying with the help of financial aid from the government (MacDonald, 41). Helen MacDonald did not have a babysitter but continued to attend class despite this challenge, bringing Michael along with her. In doing so, Helen MacDonald not only furthered her own education but also demonstrated to her young children that school is important. In the speech, “America’s Schoolchildren”, President Barack Obama uses Ethos, Pathos, and Logos in an effective manner to support his claim that every student should have an active role in the responsibility of their education. At first I thought this was an essay trying to inform us on the issue of college students. As I have read deeper into it I have thought it out to be more of a persuasive essay. The whole essay examples are given in which students and parents whine for better grades. There were five or ten situations brought up where someone would get a B but thought they worked hard enough. By repeatedly giving us visualizations of this she is trying to get a point across. She makes this the main argument in the essay. She is trying to get the point across that kids are ridiculous to ask for a better grade. If the teacher gives them a grade of a B, she clearly means it. As American’s we place a high level of importance on attending school and receiving a certain level of education. Across the world, the recommendations for attending school vastly differ based on the culture of the society. In America, we require our children to attend school until they are almost of legal age, push high school graduates to attend college and we constantly emphasize structured learning. Many children in today’s world lack many skills that would allow them to “teach” themselves outside of school leading to an increased interest in televisions, computers, and phones. Technology has taken away society’s attention away from independent learning such as reading, writing, and outside experiences. Residential schools were institutions funded by the government for young indigenous peoples. The idea was to kill the Indian in the children, and to create Westernized youth. Many children revolted the idea, while others accepted it. Crucial development occurs in a child's mind between the ages of five and eight. In the novel Three Day Road by Joseph Boyden, a story is told of three Cree people who have experienced Residential Schools and who have been forever changed because of it. I do not agree with this essay due to the fact that no matter which school you attend there will always be different types of students there with different types of literacy because we are not all the same. I feel he did not have extensive enough research on this for me to be sold on the topic.
Schools are where we spend half of our lives at, our kids are spending time and energy in these places to become better people in the future. There is absolutely no reason why budget cuts should ever happen in a school. If the country is taking taxes from all of the citizens than they should be conscious to spend that money on things that matter like our children. Making budget cuts takes away programs for kids to excel in and makes a child harder to express himself. Arts are usually the first programs to be cut.
Even when low-income schools manage to find adequate funding, the money doesn’t solve all the school’s problems. Most importantly, money cannot influence student, parent, teacher, and administrator perceptions of class and race. Nor can money improve test scores and make education relevant and practical in the lives of minority students. School funding is systemically unequal, partially because the majority of school funding comes from the school district’s local property taxes, positioning the poorest communities at the bottom rung of the education playing field. A student’s socioeconomic status often defines her success in a classroom for a number of reasons.

The Girl with the Brown Crayon tells a simple, yet deeply connected personal story of a teacher and a student, as well as other students that embrace themes of race, identity, gender, and the essential human needs to create, and to belong. Writing this evaluative essay is both beneficial to the teacher and the TCC English Department. The professor because she had given us a chance to critique her and tell her, her strengths and weakness of her teaching; it favored the English department because they now know how effective the textbook is and how effective this class is to the students actually taking it. Because I had a teacher who was willing to help when in need, English 111 wasn’t as hard as others portrayed it to be. I had a good professor, peers, and the writing center to help me with this class. I hope to continue to be successful in the second part of the course. Although I do not enjoy writing essays this is an essay I enjoyed writing.
“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.” -Pablo Picasso. This quote is pretty straightforward. It says how all children are artists and how they grow older are not an artist anymore. A child’s drawing can tell so much about what they are thinking and feeling about their surroundings. They see things differently from adults and teens because when they are drawing or doing some sort of art they are not told that it is a “bad picture” or what ever they are doing is “not right.” They don’t have a limit upon their thoughts and ideas, but when they grow up, they do. Starting from the first day of school they are taught about the wrong things and the right thing. As we grow older there are more classes that have right and wrong answers to a question like for example math. We learn to follow the steps, use the formula, and get the right answer but because of these classes we forget about the arts. If the arts are forgotten then student’s way of expressing what they feel is taken away. Which brings more pressure to students in classes like math, physics, geography, and etc. That is why schools should make arts classes mandatory because arts classes help students build their artistic and creative skills, makes them better learners, and encourages them to find other ways of expressing their thoughts.
A time approaches in every person’s life when they must come to learn new things. Speaking on behalf of all those who have attended school at some point in their life, I must say that most do not like it for its educational significance. Today’s youth undervalue the worth of America’s public school system to the point of shame. Hard-working, underpaid teachers and professors prepare to educate these ingrates as their living, and it’s exasperating for the students to not even care. I must be fair though and call attention to the fact that not everyone shares this loathe for education and schooling.
