In Flaubert’s ‘Madame Bovary’, and Sartre’s ‘No Exit’ lust is a major theme. It is expressed by theprotagonist Emma Bovary, in ‘Madame Bovary’, and is conveyed through all three characters, Inez, Estelle and Garcin, in ‘No Exit’. Emma’s life is observed intricately through an omniscient narrator who engages in realistic descriptions of her life. She is a tragic and unfulfilled dreamer. She aspires to have an aristocratic life, although she is clearly from the bourgeois class. She continuously seeks ways to initiate the romantic fantasies and illusions that she has gained from romantic novels, into her everyday life, one of the major factors that have led to her ruin. Garcin could be viewed by the audiences as is a womanizing misogynist. His words imply that he uses women merely for their sexuality and dominates his wife in any possible way. He hates that his wife wants him so much and abuses her leading to her suicide. He and Emma share the idea that they did not appreciate their partners’ love, leading to them either regretting this in Emma’s case, when Charles’ true love is finally revealed ‘And he looked at her with tenderness in his eyes that she had never seen before’ (Flaubert Pg215) or hell, in Garcin’s case. Similarly, their partners both pass away; Garcin pushes his wife to suicide, and Charles Emma’s husband dying in grief over her death and betrayal. Therefore, directly or indirectly, they are both causes of the death of their partners. She uses her power of manipulation and seduction to get her way, forgetting about the crucial consequences. This backfires immensely leading to her downfall, both in life and in hell. She was in love with her cousin’s wife, seduces her, and manipulates her to the point that they kill him to be together. Emma also utilizes manipulation when she deceives Leon, seeking his passion and love. When Emma starts to need help to repay her debts, she attempts to seduce León into stealing money from his employer to cover her debts. He finally becomes afraid and quickly escapes from her life. Inez lusts for Estelle. She attempts to seduce her. However it becomes clear to her that Estelle desires Garcin, building pure hatred for Garcin from within. We discover later in the play that she is not only interested in her sexuality but also in controlling her and having power over her, as she believes that control in sex is power ‘You’ve been sheltering in my heart for ages…I’ll keep looking at you… and you’ll live in my gaze like a mote in a sunbeam’ (Flaubert Pg 34). In contrast Emma purely desires passion and sexuality. Estelle shows the same vulnerability as Emma, whilst Garcin is do not acknowledge their partners’ love for them, whereas Inez does. The major difference is however, that she believed Florence loved her, where in fact she was living in sorrow, eventually leading to her suicide and her killing of Inez.

References to "fate" abound throughout both works. In The Awakening, Chopin uses fate to represent the expectations of Edna Pontellier's aristocratic society. Flaubert uses "fate" to portray his characters' compulsive methods of dealing with their guilt and rejecting of personal accountability. Both authors, however seem to believe that it is fate that oppresses these women; their creators view them subjectively, as if they were products of their respective environments.
The central characters, setting, and tone of the story help create the central idea of the psychological and internal desires of a woman. Through the view of the central characters it is established that the lawyer’s wife wants more than her average day and is searching for more to life than the daily routine of a house wife. Jean Varin is believed to be the desire she is looking for; however, she is not fulfilled or happy with the outcome of her choices. The setting and the tone reveal the psychological need for the wife to have an adventurous, lavish, and opulent lifestyle that she feels can only be achieved in Paris.

Enticed by Esmeralda's dancing to the depths of his being, Frollo outwardly denounced her as a sacrilegious sorceress, but his body raged for her out of lust, accounting for his repeated attempts at having her prohibited from dancing near the cathedral, or stolen away. Esmeralda, furiously in love with Phoebus, nearly sacrificed her virtue to gain his heart, before Frollo gravely wounded him. Tortured into confessing witchcraft and condemned to die by a court with church officials, the gypsy enchantress obtained sanctuary in Notre Dame cathedral, rescued from the hangman's noose by Quasimodo. At this point, Frollo attempted to claim Esmeralda's merciful and virtuous heartfelt forgiveness for his passion, failing miserably because his efforts appeared feeble and lascivious. Frollo and Esmeralda perished, however, after a storming of the cathedral and gruesome battle, dying sacrifices on the altar of human emotion.
The protagonists, The Marquise de Merteuil and the Vicomte de Valmont, consider it their life’s ambition to sadistically control and dominate those around them through sexual intrigue. These two villains are indeed locked in psychological combat to see who can actually ‘out-do’ the other in stalking, capturing and destroying the souls of others. “No Exit,” by Jean-Paul Sartre, is a play that illustrates three people’s transitions from wanting to be alone in Hell to needing the omnipresent “other” constantly by their sides. As the story progresses, the characters’ identities become more and more permanent and unchangeable. Soon Inez, Garcin, and Estelle live in the hope that they will obtain the other’s acceptance. These three characters cannot accept their existentialist condition: they are alone in their emotions, thoughts and fears. Consequently, they look to other people to give their past lives and present deaths meaning. Forever trapped in Hell, they are condemned to seek the other for meaning in their lives; even when given the chance to exit the room, the characters choose to stay with each other instead of facing uncertainty and the possibility of being detached from the stability of their relationships with the others. Without other people, the characters would have no reason to exist. Each characters’ significance depends on the other’s opinion of them; Garcin needs someone to deny his cowardliness, Inez yearns for Estelle’s love, and Estelle just wants passion with no commitment. This triangle of unending want, anguish and continual disillusionment because of the other is precisely Sartre’s definition of pure Hell.
