Graduate Student Personal Statement for Loyola University I truly hope that you will take my application into consideration for the Loyola University Maryland School of Education. Teaching and education is a passion of mine and I feel that this graduate program will help me hone my skills to become a well-rounded and effective educator. I bring to the table experience in academic research and applied experience as an employee of the Harford County Public Schools. Just this month, I graduated from Washington College with a Bachelor of Arts in American Studies. During my time attending this institution, I was involved in an extensive academic research project. As a graduation requirement at Washington College, I had to complete a capstone thesis. My study was titled, Standing in the Schoolhouse Door: The Desegregation of Public Schools in Cecil County, Maryland, 1954-1965. This project, involving extensive academic research, was completed in a six month period. Hours were spent diving through collections at the Enoch Pratt Free Library, Maryland Archives, the Historical Society of Cecil County, Cecil County Public Schools, and the Morris W. Rannels collection at the McDaniel College Library. From my research, which relied heavily on media accounts and meeting minutes from the Board of Education of Cecil County, it was determined that two factors triggered the way the county school system handled the issue: Influence from community members who relocated to Cecil County due to the Bainbridge United States Naval Training Center and the lawsuit which resulted from an incident involving the African-American community of the military base and school system officials. Cecil County’s schools would not become fully integrated... ... middle of paper ... ... skills that will be imperative to help them learn and burgeon in school. That being said, transition services for students between the ages of sixteen and twenty-one are useful for students in this age group who still need support and can provide them with skills that will help a person with a disability get by in the adult world. Whether I end up teaching social studies, special education, or a combination of the two, I will be content. I also believe that Loyola University Maryland’s School of Education will help me achieve this goal. Having attended information sessions for graduate education, I am very impressed with Loyola’s program and I believe that this program is in alignment with my beliefs and will best meet my needs. It is my hope that you will take my application into serious consideration. If you decide to accept me, you will not regret it.
In 1954, The Brown vs. The Board of Education decision made segregation in schools illegal. New York City’s attempt to integrate the schools was unsuccessful, leaving them more segregated than before.(Podair 30) By 1966, New York City’s black communities were unhappy with the Board of Education’s control of their school districts because of its repeated unsuccessful attempts at integration. Many white groups, like the Parents and Taxpayers Organization, were also frustrated with the current system and called for “The Neighborhood School.” It was their discontent that motivated the community control of the Ocean Hill Brownsville school district. Because of the city’s civil rights movement and their support from many influential people and groups, the district was granted control .(Podair 82)

I have always set big goals, and had even bigger dreams. However, these dreams aren’t like those of some of my classmates such as becoming a movie star or a famous soccer player, but ones of curing cancer and providing the world with answers to scientific phenomena. Should the Gatton Academy provide me the chance to take the next step toward fulfilling these dreams, very little would prevent me from attending.
Students with disabilities can have a smooth transition from school to post school activities. The transitional services and regulations provided by the government guarantee that students will be provided with the education, social skills and community support needed for the transition to be flawless and successful. There are many parts involved in the education, implementation and transition of students with disabilities. The parents, teachers, resource teachers, outside agencies and community partners all are involved to help transition the student into the post school world.
Fayetteville Public High School was the first Arkansas High School to publicly announce it would be integrated. On May 22, within a week following Brown vs Board of Education, Fayetteville announced its intention to desegregate, and, three months later, white and black students were attending the same local high school together.(Deaf) The decision to integrate saved the district five-thousand dollars a year, funds that were normally spent on bussing, board and tuition at distant high schools for its black students. Fayetteville and Charleston were both facing financial situations and made their decision based on these facts and not their moral desire to integrate.(Johnson124) Although many black students were subjected to cases of verbal harassment and dismissive treatment from their teachers, they were also able to form positive relationships with...
I plan to never stop learning. I feel I have a thrust for knowledge that can never be quenched. I plan to graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education. Upon completing that degree I plan to share the wealth of knowledge I have attained. I plan to start teaching in or around the Appalachian area. I would like to stay in West Virginia, but for reason unknown I would be prepared to move to western Virginia, eastern Kentucky, or northern North Carolina. I then plan to enroll in graduate school to receive my masters, and then I wish to complete my education with a doctoral degree. I wish that one-day to help inspire the future teachers of America or the world.
...cts in these areas were unusually well-maintained. Another curious observation is the fact that laundry hanging on the line and other signs of occupancy were apparent, yet there were no children outside playing on a stunningly beautiful Saturday at noontime. On this particular day, there was an event at the University which brought a great deal of alumni and families to the campus. Interestingly, there were little to no minorities present beyond college age students when the public school system in the area is 90 percent minority children. The residents are nowhere to be seen. The entire scenario is enough to offer some serious concern about the politics of the area. More research is needed to fully interpret the information, and I will look forward to learning more about the educational system in rural Clarke County, urban Fulton County, and suburban Cobb County.

I believe I have many characteristics and interests that would make me a great candidate at University of Maryland, Baltimore County. I am a very introspective person; I put a lot of thought into what I do and why I do it. I constantly evaluate myself and my progress in making and reaching goals. My deep interest in attending stems from your excellent faculty, reputation, and your research facilities, which are among the best in the country. Hopefully, my dream will become a reality.
Hagner, Kurtz, Cloustier, Arakelian, Brucker, and May (2012) start the article by reviewing the requirements for transition planning passed in 1990 through the Individuals With Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). IDEA was amended in 2004 and requires students 16 and older, with disabilities, to receive transition planning to improve their progression to post-school activities. The authors reviewed previous research and found that disabled students have a much worse outcome in their post-school lives then their non-disabled peers, including in the areas
I am confident and enthusiastic about my proposed interest areas and I believe I have the necessary skills and competence to become an asset to Stanford University. With my ability to self-learn, persevere and work hard, I am sure that I can face the university’s highly challenging environment. I am aware that to excel in the program, I would have to meet the high standards set by the university. I am confident that I can foster a symbiotic relationship with the university and its students. With this, I humbly ask for the golden opportunity to be admitted to Stanford University.
...e special students. The expected outcome of transitional programs for student with special needs is that they are able to enter into adult life beyond the doors of an academic institution. These transitional programs offer the students a future and an entrance into the real world whereby they can do things on their own. The students should be able to leave these institutions with skills that could help them earn a lining and live independently. For the student to achieve these goals, they need their parents, educators as well as themselves to work collaboratively for their better future.
