Low Brass Ensemble For my last and final concert review of the semester I went to the Low Brass Ensemble on November 7th in White Concert Hall. I am not a very big music concert fan in general, but this performance was pretty good. There were only a few instruments and 10 students playing those instruments. After each piece, the performers moved different seats and I was never able to figure out why they did that. The first performance that took place this night was called Serenade Eine Kleine Tuba Musik written by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. During this performance the instruments that were played were a trombone, tuba, and euphonium. The Euphonium was a new instrument to me. I had never heard of it, nor heard the sound that it plays. It plays a deep sound and was featured in every piece throughout the night. At the beginning of the performance, I had trouble distinguishing the tone color because there was an instrument I was not familiar with and didn’t know the sound it would put out. As the night went on, I was able to distinguish it easier as I was getting more familiar with the sounds the instruments were playing. Throughout the piece, the music gradually gets louder throughout the whole song. The tempo of this piece was slow which is referred to as largo. The third piece was where I was really able to distinguish the tone color as the euphonium was the instrument that was playing at the beginning by itself and I was really able to gather a better understanding of the type of sound that comes out of this instrument. Poise and Policy was what we consider a strophic form which means the music is repeating for every stanza of the music. The piece also had a medium pace to it which we call
