Love and Sex in the Medieval World
Have you ever thought, where did the concept of love and sex develop and evolve from? It is from the time of the Neanderthals that sexual status came into play. In the later world though it is very much different. Love and sex are more emotional and physical bonding of two people than it ever was before. At the same time however sex is just as much pleasure as it always was but the concept of love had arisen and made it more than just pleasure with multiple partners. Sexual intercourse had developed into something more. There was a whirlwind of emotions. For every culture, religion and part of the world though it was different. Even social class came into play as those in high societies believes and ways were much different than those in the lower classes. Europe, India and Japan during their medieval times had all developed their own sense and believes of what love and sex represented to them and their cultures. They all had their own preferences when it came to sex as well as having different ideas on how sex and love related to marriage within their culture and their society. Love and sex in these three areas was vastly different because of these cultural, spiritual, and social differences; each one of these three societies helped develop the concept of what love and sex are seen as in today’s world.
In medieval Europe the basics of love and sex were very different from the other regions, as it was based more on the concept of love than it was on the physical interactions of sexual intercourse. Each one contributing a small piece of their values and teachers whether it be spiritual or physical, about love or sex, they have all helped us shape our concept of sex and love today. Love and sex today are looked at as a bonding of two people and are intertwined with one another, there is no love without sex and no sex without love. These three cultures have showed us though how they can be separated though. They showed us how love and sex are connected but completely different. In the end they helped play a large part in developing our ideas of love and sex in our world today because of the different religious and social ideas that were brought into play.
In conclusion, what I learned from this article is that sex is much more complicated then I could have believed it to be. This article made me aware of many conflicts, issues, and disagreements that go along with what is or isn’t sex, and how there is no clear way to say, it’s really just a matter of opinion. For lesbians the simple use of a finger is enough, for gay men its anal sex. For some sex is innate and instinctive, while others believe it is learned. For some it’s based on love and pleasure, while for others it’s about domination. I highly doubt that there is anyone in this world that could come up with a universal meaning to sex which would please all parties. It is my conclusion that there is no right or wrong definition of sex; it is whatever
Marie de France’s “Lanval” is a Breton lai dominated by themes common to 12th century literature, which through its exploration of love, erotic desire, wealth, gender and community, tells the story of a young knight who finds himself caught between two worlds: his lover’s and his own. Forced to separate these societies by a warning in which his lover states, “do not let any man know about this…you would lose me for good if this love were known” (Lines 145-148), Lanval must keep his love a secret and exist apart from the Arthurian world into which he was born. Consequently, romantic love between Lanval and his fairie queen exists conditionally, that is upon Lanval’s physical and emotional isolation. This restriction suggests that romantic love, as described in terms of erotic desire and physical/emotional devotion throughout “Lanval,” is unsuited for existence in the mundanity of Arthurian society. Therefore, Lanval’s solitude is necessary for his maintaining his relationship with the fairie queen, a fact that suggests the incompatibility of romantic love with Arthurian society, as Marie depicts it.

The relationship of courtly love was very much like the feudal relationship between a knight and his liege. The lover serves his beloved, in the manner a servant would. He owes his devotion and allegiance to her, and she inspires him to perform noble acts of valor (Schwartz). Capellanus writes, in The Art of Courtly Love, “A true lover considers nothing good except what he thinks will please his beloved”. The stories of Marie de France and Chrétien de Troyes illustrate the conventions of courtly love.
“The Wife of Bath’s Tale” is written in an entertaining and adventurous spirit, but serves a higher purpose by illustrating the century’s view of courtly love. Hundreds, if not thousands, of other pieces of literature written in the same century prevail to commemorate the coupling of breathtaking princesses with lionhearted knights after going through unimaginable adventures, but only a slight few examine the viability of such courtly love and the related dilemmas that always succeed. “The Wife of Bath’s Tale” shows that women desire most their husband’s love, Overall, “The Wife of Bath’s Tale” shows that the meaning of true love does not stay consistent, whether between singular or separate communities and remains timeless as the depictions of love from this 14th century tale still hold true today.

In my opinion sex and love are closely related but not one and the same. They do share some values such as mutual attraction, trust, pleasure, enjoyment, but sex is individually realized as even people in love may not have sex and still continue being in love and people who are in love might have sex with their loved one just to satisfy their own needs while the partner would agree to sex even though he or she might not enjoy it as much, but out of love, would do it anyway.
The tales of King Arthur and many of their numerous characters are well known in literature. The Arthurian world is one of the great myths of modern times. Those great pieces of literature have many common themes, one of them being courtly love “L’amour Courtois”. This paper talks of courtly love as seen in King Arthur’s world especially examining “Yvain or the Knight with the Lion” and “Lancelot: or the Knight of the Cart”. Furthermore, one of the goals is to show how that courtly love could be seen in today in our world.
