Today on average women are paid 79 for every dollar earned by men. Women complete equal amounts of work but still continue to get paid less than men, laws and bills are in the process of being passed to equal out the pay of both men and women to decrease the wage gap. The equal pay act was passed in 1963 and was aimed to get ride of wage disparity based on sex. Therefore, according to 2014 statistics it took 44 years for the wage gap to go from 59 cents of every mans dollar to 79 cents. A Woman may work in the same career as a man and work equal time but in the end the woman is still getting paid less. The statistics are even worse for women of color. Some of the most know are the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, Presidential Memorandum, and the Paycheck Fairness Act. The Lilly Ledbetter Fair pay act was the first act Obama signed into law 7 years ago. Lilly discovered she had been “Paid less than her male counter parts for 20 years, she filed a lawsuit against the company but was told her case was invalid” (Equal Pay for Equal Work). The reason her case was invalid was because at the time you were only aloud to sue for pay discrimination when you received your first paycheck. Equal employment opportunity commission and department of labor are publishing a proposal to annually collect summary pay data that would cover over 63 million people. Obama also supports the Paycheck Fairness Act, which is a bill that updates and strengthens the equal pay act. By strengthening equal pay laws we can shrink the wage gap.
