Alfonso Arau’s film version of his ex-wife’s novel is like a loving painting of what she was thinking when she wrote the novel. A general criticism of the film version is that it is dark and hard to view. I would argue that this was done deliberately by the director and his cinematographers (Emmanuel Lubezki and Steve Bernstien) to enhance certain scenes. As you progress through the film you notice that emotionally dark moments are dimly lit and fantasy scenes filmed through warm fuzzy filters. The use of light and darkness enriches the story by emphasizing the characters and setting.
In the opening scenes you notice that the only light coming into the dark room is from the window. It highlights the onions that are being chopped, emphasizing the importance that food will take in this journey we are about to embark on. The next scene of the men discussing Gertrudis birth, is one of the darkest in the movie. This scene, coming right after Tita’s delivery, gives us not only a feeling of impending doom, but of dark secrets held. The only light comes from a tiny window which tells us that the home we are viewing is dark and cold. This juxtaposition of light and darkness occurs throughout the movie, especially in scenes including Mama Elena. When Arau then takes the viewer outside the house, we are treated to colors that are pastel like and shot through filters giving a feeling of relief from confined atmosphere of the house. The scene in the film when Pedro declares his love for Tita is entirely lit by candlelight, not only giving us a romantic image, but also foreshadowing the importance that fire will play in the story, particularly in the ending.

Alfonso Arau has bathed his film in a mixture of a visual glow and a darkness not only to show us the differences in setting and characters, but to show us passions and repressions. Strong passions produce sparks and fire, despair is bathed in darkness. Arau also uses lighting to just enhance the beauty of the film. The night scenes are candlelit and have a certain glow. The day scenes are inside the houses have natural light pouring in through windows and cracks giving the film a beautiful look almost as if we were looking through the windows of the character’s souls.

Through the use of complementary colors, she achieves great contrast. Contrasting hues develop a theme of light vs. dark, or in Liu’s case, expectations vs. reality. The lighting was also very effectively used to show the coming and going of cars on the set. The reflection of lights on the front door of the house were used resemble those of an automobile. Even the final scene had just enough absence of light that the shadows of the characters could be seen sitting around the dinner table and praying by candlelight. At the very end of the performance the candles were extinguished consuming the set in blackness in turn signifying the end of the production.

Thus, the audience can see every wrinkle on the old man’s face and the distorted expression on Francis’s face when Jane comes into view. Even lighting allows the audience to study the nuances of the characters’ expressions. Whereas low-key lighting would call attention to the darkness of the scene, high-key lighting works in tandem with the subtlety of the rest of the scene. It is also unclear what time of day the scene takes place. This is yet another unnatural element in the setting that makes the audience uneasy.
It is impossible to talk about a Wes Anderson movie without acknowledging its stunning color palettes and quirky storytelling style. In one of his most exemplary works, Moonrise Kingdom, Anderson uses a warm color scheme that blends bright and desaturated colors that ranges from golden yellow, vermillion red, creamy beige, light brown, to even a hint of teal. His color scheme, which is reflected throughout the film’s props, sets, costumes, title design, and camera filters, effectively evokes nostalgia, establishes the summer-like, dreamy mood of the film, and creates a distinct contrast between the different moral values of his characters. However, in the chaotic stormy escape scene and in the costume of Social Services, the visual design deviates greatly from the film’s primarily warm color palette and instead, immerse their visual elements in a deep, dark blue color to show the contrasts in the mood of the story as well as the attitudes of the characters. The producer was aiming to create mystery and fear. The dark of the night and the description of the house as feeling dead in the protagonist’s narration sets a suspenseful scene filled with fear and tension. The young girl is followed by the camera as she explores the mansion. When entering the room suspected to be that of her aunts the camera leaves her side to pan around the room. The darkness doesn’t reveal everything but one becomes aware of a search. The revelation of little secrets leaves the viewer with many questions. The room is familiar to the protagonist as she finds items symbolic to her and familiar photographs. This familiarity however does not retract from suspicions that something sinister has been hidden. The producer has successfully captivated the viewer. The protagonist is being followed throughout the scene and has thus allowed for the viewer to bond with them. They are engaging with the audience through narration and have in return enticed the viewer to follow them along their journey. One feels nervous for the young girl however through tension in the scene one does not want them to discontinue the journey as too many questions have been left unanswered.
