Neoclassical art period: It is a period can be said to be centered in Rome. It is said to be the period that gave attention to unemotional art which can be traced from the ancient Greece and Rome. Architects during this period are Robert Smirke, Robert Adam and Ingres. Having been a primary influence in the 19th century academic art and art culture puts much focus in the culture of ancient Greece and Rome (Artcyclopedia.com 2015). Its inspiration can be directly linked to the discovery and excavation of classical sites such as Pompeii and Athens, which provided great knowledge of ancient art (Essential-humanities.net 2015). Its shows and represents the downfall of France from Napoleon. In this work, the robust woman in the picture is an allegorical goddess-figure and symbolize liberty as the leader of the people.The painting represents the end of the enlightenment period as it involves politics matters as we can observe here leberty leading the of the people of France. A great deal of violence is depicted in the art as numerous people, lay dead on the ground. The large number of dead and injured people in the picture represents the sacrifice made by those who gave they're lives for freedom. Several social classes are represented in the painting as well as a diversified age group. There are deep, rich colors with visible brush-strokes which can tell clearly that this is a romantic art. Another indication that this is a romantic art is the stormy expression of emotion and the depiction of radical nationalism as the french revolution flag takes center stage.
Differences between the two art works: Inasmuch as it can be observed there are several diffeferences that can be noted between the two works of art.
In the Neoclassical work the background is seen dull and uninteresting as the focus is in the foreground. In the Romantic art the background as well as the foreground is part of the story as we can see the smoke and the city in the background.
The Neoclassical painting is traditional, stoic and orderly. The Romantic painting is modern, agitated and disorganized.
