Since the first prehistoric cave painting, and perhaps much before that, the human race has always used art as a form of expression. With the passing of each historical period came new technologies and techniques and were all influenced by the unique style, characteristics, and social conditions of those periods. Even though, each period discovered new forms and unique styles of art most historical periods were influenced by an earlier period of history. In this essay, I will explore the relationship, style, and influences of the Renaissance and Baroque periods and will also compare and contrast a work of art from both periods to further explain the relationship between the two eras. The Renaissance period started in Italy and took place between the 1400’s and the 1600’s. In French, the term Renaissance means rebirth, which is an accurate way to describe that period since it was then that many people chose to break away from the stagnation, incertitude, and extreme hardships that occurred during the Middle Ages and plagued most of Europe. The Renaissance period is noted for being a time when the population sought educational reform which increased literacy and many were able to master more than one skill set. This led to an intellectual, economic, and artistic revolution that transformed several European nations such as Italy, France, Spain, and several others. During this time, there were several developments within the Catholic Church, such as scandals and controversy. Because of that, many people were driven away from the traditions of the church and sought more freedom of expression and individualism. As economies improved, there was more wealth and a desire for self improvement which greatly influenced the arts. While... ... middle of paper ... ...nce of the many pieces of art, this period raised the bar for detailed artwork. Through its passionate and ornate styles it influenced the Rococo period and other eras to produce even more extravagant and opulent art. Due to its popularity, it was adopted internationally and had many variations of styles. There were many great artists, such as Rubens, Caravaggio, Bernini, Rembrandt, Velazquez, Vermeer, Bach, Vivaldi and many others that used their art as a way of raising social consciousness, exploited, and delighted the senses. The impact that the Baroque period had on architecture can be admired today by visiting the Elector's Palace in Trier, Germany, the Santa Susanna in Rome, Italy, the Saints Peter and Paul Church in Krakow, Poland, and St. Peter and St. Paul’s Church in Vilnius, Lithuania, the Trevi Fountain in Rome, the Palace of Versailles, in France.
Scientists started to study the earth and it’s positioning in the universe. This was a time when the people started taking more of an interest in astronomy and mathematical equations. During the time of the Catholic Reformation, artists began to challenge all the rules that society has set for artistic design. Artists starting with Parmigianino, Tintoretto, and El Greco began to add a wide variety of colors into their paintings, challenging the way things have been done in the past. These artists also added abnormal figures or altered the proportions in paintings.
During the Renaissance, the way in which art was portrayed changed. Many people became more confident with the human body and weren’t afraid to portray human characteristics as well as flaws. During the Renaissance painters began using perspective to make things appear three dimensional in their works. Also, they began to sculpt and paint average people living day to day lives. Patrons began financially supporting the arts. For example, wealthy families paid artists to create portraits of them and bought many of their works. Over time, Renaissance art drastically changed into the modern art that w...
The renaissance or “rebirth” was a cultural awakening which spanned from the fourteenth to sixteenth century. A growing interest in humanist traits and classical ideas heavily influenced the art during the renaissance. A growing community of artists provided much needed competition for their profession. The renaissance introduced many different and modern ideas but also remained obedient to classical belief. The unique art of the renaissance spread throughout Europe. Northern European art differed tremendously from Italian art.
The Renaissance period of history occurred during the 15th and 16th centuries. Renaissance in its basic definition means rebirth. According to Merriam Webster, renaissance formally means, “a movement or period of vigorous artistic and intellectual activity” (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary). Renaissance is the title given to the period of great change in music and art. The Renaissance period ushered in a culture of music that the public could enjoy. Most importantly it was a period that encouraged musicians and composers to create music and take risks with voices, instruments and notes.
According to Parramón (2005), when the XVI century was finishing in Rome, is when a new style named Baroque art arose. Baroque art developed during the seventeenth century and the first decades of the eighteenth century. Through this time Baroque art spread throughout Europe adopting different characteristics dealing with religion, political views, social situations and, the tradition of the country. The church of the counter, the absolutist states, and the Protestant Bourgeoisie, seized the usage of baroque forms to them as instruments for propagation of its values and as a manifestation of his power. The main features of Baroque art are: movement, sinuosity, exaggeration, theatricality, and pomp. The light sets are established as protagonists of architecture, painting and sculptures are closely articulated in exaggerating the dynamism, drama, and sense of apotheosis of the works. In contrast to the mythological and religious themes that the human figures played a leading role, other genres of art such as portraiture, still life and still life were developed.
The Baroque Period begins with the death of J. S. Bach. This period is also known as the Age of Absolutism. Most composers in this time period found employment in the church, court, and the opera house. As the instruments started to grow so did the Baroque orchestra. String, woodwind, and many others became more important than vocal music at this time. During the Baroque period harmonic complexity grew.
...ic landscapes. The baroque marked the time in which painters considered using subjects other than scenes from the Bible and from classical traditions. The baroque period also was the period in which artists painted portraits, and everyday life scenes. Baroque artist broke away from trying to make the calm balance known to the renaissance artists. Artists from the baroque era were interested in no longer tried in the extreme. They wanted to paint subjects possessing strong emotions; they wanted to capture those emotions and feelings in their work. Instead of just extremes of feeling sometimes, these strong emotions were personal. More often artists tried to portray intense religious emotions. Baroque art attempted to explain how and why their subjects fit as strongly as they did by representing their emotional states as vividly and analytically as possible.
As discussed earlier, there were numerous transformation that took place during the Renaissance. The main developments were Individualism, Secularism and Humanism. In fact without such transformations, the world would not stand as we know it today .As a result of these three trends Art was revolutionized. It is important to bear in mind that Classical art by the Greeks and Romans, which also emphasized individualism and perfection of the human body, were a large influence on the artists of the Renaissance period. However, the artist in this era took to a whole new level. Renaissance placed the highest value on self-expression and self fulfillment and to a large extent contribute immensely to the western Civilization.
As the seventeenth century began the Catholic Church was having a hard time bringing back the people who were swept away by the protestant reformation. The conflict between the protestant had a big influence on art. (Baroque Art) The church decided to appeal to the human emotion and feeling. They did so by introducing a style called Baroque. Baroque was first developed in Rome and it was dedicated to furthering the aims of Counter Reformation. Baroque was first used in Italy than later spread to the north. In this paper I will argue that the Italian Baroque pieces were more detailed and captured the personality of the figure, in contrast and comparison to Northern Baroque pieces that aimed to produce a sense of excitement and to move viewers in an emotional sense leaving them in awe. I will prove this by talking about the different artwork and pieces of Italian Baroque art versus Northern Baroque Art.
The baroque period was during the 1600’s that started in Rome, before spreading quickly throughout Europe. It can be considered a time where a new Art movement flourished as people were expressing themselves in the most creative ways possible. Baroque comes from the Portuguese word Barroco, which means something irregular or strange. At this time, art was being changed. Most of the art of this period is complex, to the point that it evoked feelings towards the “audience”, usually in dramatic ways. Baroque Art wasn’t meant to depict the life style of people at that time, however it is usually noticeable that most of the art have some ties with the catholic religion. While Baroque art is almost its own style, one can compare it to the styles of Renaissance and Neoclassicism. In terms of music, it is believed that Baroque brought about new music styles, including Cantatas, Operas, Canons and Concertos. It is said that the Baroque period end...
Baroque art can be described as a “distinctive new style” in which artists embraced “dynamism, theatricality, and elaborate ornamentation, all used to spectacular effect, often on a grandiose scale”. Baroque art encompasses a vast range of art from the dramatic and theatrical Italian pieces, as the quote suggests, to the more simple and every-day life but still fabulous Dutch pieces. Baroque art can hardly be contained in one description because it describes so many types of art, in great part due to the religious, socio-economic, and political scenes of the time. Religiously, the Catholic Church was responding to the Reformation by creating dramatic pieces to invoke piety and devotion. Politically, monarchies and rulers were using commissioned art to emphasize their authority and their given right to rule. Socio-economically, the middle class was rising and therefore wanting to buy and commission pieces of art to boost their reputation and validate their status in the social scene. These three changes were extremely significant but can by no means generalize the entire historical context of Baroque art. Instead, they stand as specific examples of important reasons for the range and breadth of Baroque art.
The Renaissance was a time of change. It began in Italy during the 14th century, and spread throughout the North. People all over Europe were affected, for the better and for the worse. Some people finally had a chance to control their own fate. Others, like upper class women, lost their social status. The values and purposes of Renaissance education were to improve the society, increase the economy, and restore the religious beliefs.
The French Revolution, indeed, changed the structure of economics and social sphere of the old regime, and also the ideology of that time. In the years that followed the Revolution, the always increasing senses of both freedom and individuality were evident, not only in French society, but also in art. As stated by Dowd, “leaders of the French Revolution consciously employed all forms of art to mobilize public sentiment in favor of the New France and French nationalism.” In between all the artistic areas, the art of painting had a special emphasis. After the Revolution, the French art academies and also schools were now less hierarchical and there was, now, more freedom of engaging into new themes, not being the apprentices so tied up to their masters footsteps, not being so forced to follow them.
