“The word 'leukemia' is a very frightening word. In many instances, it's a killer and it's something that you have to deal with in a very serious and determined way if you're going to beat it” - Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Many people, including tons of children, fight leukemia every day trying to beat this vicious cancer. Without knowing how leukemia is exactly caused, it puts a damper on how to avoid it.
Leukemia, in other words cancer of the blood, is a disease that takes hold on to, not only adults, but children as well. This body system disease interest me in many ways. The first time I heard about Leukemia is from the movie The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. One of the main characters named Tibby ends up working at at a grocery store for the summer where she meets Bailey Graffman. Fascinated by Tibby's movie, Bailey becomes Tibby's self-appointed assistant. Tibby is annoyed by this at first, but gradually grows to accept Bailey. She later learns from Bailey's neighbor that Bailey has leukemia. Bailey eventually goes to the hospital with a bad infection. Tibby avoids the hospital for a while, but eventually visits Bailey, bringing the Traveling Pants. She offers them to Bailey and pleads with her to take them so that they can help her. Bailey responds by saying that the pants have already worked their magic on Bailey by bringing her and Tibby together. Tibby spends a lot of time with Bailey in the hospital after that. A couple of days later, Tibby receives a phone call in the morning from Mrs. Graffman, Bailey's mother, saying that Bailey died in the night. Since watching the movie I have wondered exactly what happened to Bailey, since she was so young hence the reason why I choose this disease for my honors paper!

You can take the following precautions just in case; such as do not smoke, and stay away from radiation and situations that would expose you to radiation.
Since discovering more about Leukemia, it seems that I could be at risk for developing it. However, I am not worried. You see most symptoms early on and no one in my family has a history of this disease. Scientist are still doing tests and research to discover the exact cause, but until then I will take the precautions like anyone else. In the end, Leukemia is not something to joke about or taken lightly. It is just as serious as any other cancer, and since its also found in kids, people and new parents should be aware of the disease and its risks.
A few months ago, she was diagnosed with leukemia and has been receiving Chemotherapy. The doctors have confessed that the Chemo has not had any impact, and found a donor match for a bone marrow transplant.

This paper explores the changes in the life of children dealing with cancer, families that have been affected by these diseases (also known as pediatric cancer) and a small part of the journey they experience. Cancer does not discriminate and affects all members of the family unit. This paper investigates the challenges that a family will experience from the first diagnoses through palliative care. It examines research and statistic about childhood cancer from organization as the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), the National Cancer Institute's (NCI), Children’s Cancer Research Fund (CCRF), and other cancer research organization. Although there are 12 major types of cancers that affect children, the main focus in this paper will be acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL). It will also include an interview, the personal experiences of a family, real life emotions, and the effect on the parents and sibling of the (Ashtyn) child presently facing acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL). Life is no longer what formerly was known as being normal. Life with cancer becomes a new journey, the new normal family life that, unfortunately is not normal, but a life that includes cancer.
Over one million Americans in the United States are living with or have been diagnosed with leukemia. That’s a big amount of people. I chose to do my research paper on leukemia because two years ago I lost my grandma to the cancer. I wanted to know more about the disease and what was happening to her. I researched the different types, risk factors, symptoms, treatment, and what kind of research is being done to help cure leukemia. Leukemia is a cancer of the blood cells that start in the bone marrow. During leukemia the bone marrow starts to make a lot of abnormal white blood cells or “leukemia cells”.

Leukemia like any other cancer is devastating especially when it affects children and especially when they are too young to understand most of what is happening to their bodies. Facts like these are what should be used to motivate researchers and caregivers to help to make the process of treatment and care for patient dealing with disease one that is pleasant and supportive. The research should be taken seriously and it is hoped that in the future a cure can be found and the cause of the disease can be explained. It is also hoped that achievements like those can give families who are coping with disease or who have lost loved ones to the disease can find closure and solace in knowing that other may not have to go through what they have.
The term neutropenia describes the situation where the numbers of neutrophils in the blood are decreased to an abnormally low level. Neutrophils are a type of white blood cell also known as polymorphonuclear leukocytes or (PMNs). Neutropenia reduces the body's capability to fight off bacterial infections and fungi (such as yeast) that invade the body. Neutropenia can occur for different reasons. Some degree of neutropenia occurs in about half of all cancer patients who are receiving chemotherapy, and it’s one of the most common side effects in people with leukemia. Patients who have cancer may become neutropenic because of the chemotherapy they have received, sometimes neutropenia occurs after a viral infection. People may also be born with neutropenia, and in some cases the reasons are just not known. People with neutropenia may lower the likelihood of developing an infection by paying close attention to ones hygiene, such as hand washing can help.

Sickle cell anemia is a disease that reforms the patient’s red blood cells, which makes the red blood cells has an abnormal shape like a sickle. Sickled red blood cells can result to severe anemia; decrease causes numerous painful symptoms in patients. A defective protein called hemoglobin is what cause the abnormal shape of the red blood cells in the sickle cell patients.
No matter who it happens to, any type of cancer is heart-breaking. However, one’s heart seems to crack a little bit deeper when you hear a child has been diagnosed. A child with leukemia will not have the same physical development as a healthy child. Around the ages from 6-8, children begin to slowly gain height and weight. It’s very strange how the appearance of such an illness can appear but they have been able to come up with a few theories to how. One of the theories they have come up with is that there may have been some type of exposure to radiation when the mother was pregnant with the child or even at any point of their early life. It has been showed that too much exposure to ionizing radiation can damage DNA which can later on lead to leukemia. A second theory is that the child inherited a gene mutation which can cause the cells to grown uncontrolled which in the end turns into cancer. It can develop as early as when the child is in the womb. Children that are born with conditions such as Down syndrome have a higher chance of getting leukemia than a child without that condition.
The Phase I trial will be discussed here as it pertains to the topic at hand. The typical treatment for cervical cancer if surgery is not a viable option – like if the cancer has spread, then called locally advanced cervical cancer – is chemotherapy and radiation treatment at the same time. Bone cancer is classified into primary bone cancer & secondary bone cancer. Basically, Primary bone cancer starts in the bone; then the cancer initially forms in the cells of the bone; while the secondary cancer starts elsewhere in the body and gets spread to the bone.
