The purpose of this paper is to describe the attributes and competencies of my leader of influence, MSG Anthony Good, and what type of leader legacy I would like to leave behind. I define an Army leader as someone who inspires and influences others to accomplish goals. MSG Good has played a pivotal role in the development of other Soldiers and my own leadership philosophy. He has demonstrated, through actions and words, his values and wisdom. I want to emulate those values and attain that wisdom in my military career. He exemplifies the leader attributes and competencies: character, presence, intellect, leads, develops, and achieves (Headquarters, Department of the Army, 2012). A leader’s character, at its root, will encompass the Army Values and Warrior Ethos. Headquarters (2012) says, “integrity is a key mark of a leader’s character” (p. 6). Integrity is doing what is right, legally and morally, even when no one is looking. MSG Good embodies this moral code in everything he does.
MSG Good displays great character during his daily duties or when solving ethical problems. He ensures that those around him are adhering to the standards without taking shortcuts. He leads by and sets the example through his actions. This builds trust with his peers and subordinates. This can create a stronger unity between the Soldiers and their leaders.
Integrity is an important value in my personal leadership philosophy. It keeps me honest and helps with dealing with my own ethical dilemmas. John Goodwin was his resilience to overcome all the horrific parts of this deployment and still stayed with it and worked his hardest with no breaks until he was forced to go on that leave to rest and then as soon as he heard something bad had happened, he stopped everything he was doing and got back to his men as quickly as he could it showed how much he cared, he also listened to his men and what they needed and tried helping them all the time. One thing he did not do a good job of was letting Kunk get to him and knock his confidence down and taking care of his own health so he could be awake and alert as company commander each and every day. In deed on June 6, 1944, the little town of Bedford, VA, suffered a tragedy that would never be forgotten. But through the pain and hardship some of officers who leaded the Bedford boys displayed remarkable leadership’s principles. On a warm San Diego night in May of 1988, not smart enough to know whether I should be scared or excited, I embarked on my military career standing atop yellow footprints neatly painted on the asphalt. As an eighteen year-old kid entering recruit training, the finer points of leadership, at any level, had not yet piqued my curiosity. The question of “What makes a leader great?” is without one solitary answer. Effective leaders in the corporate and political arenas are deserving of praise, but because of the nature of their work, military leaders are arguably more complex and intriguing.
As our forefathers before us stated, ‘‘No one is more professional than I. I am a Noncommissioned Officer, a leader of soldiers. As a Noncommissioned Officer, I realize that I am a member of a time honored corps, which is known as “The Backbone of the Army (“The NCO Creed writing by SFC Earle Brigham and Jimmie Jakes Sr”). These words to Noncommissioned Officer should inspire us to the fullest with pride, honor, and integrity. The NCO creed should mean much more than just words whenever we attend a NCO’s school. For most of us this is what our creed has become because we learn to narrate or recite. The military from the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard has an overabundance of NCOs who fall under their pay grade of E-5, E-6 and etc. Yet somehow there still not enough leaders. I believe that the largest problem afflicting the military today is our lack of competent leaders, ineffective leader development, and how we influence our subordinates under us who are becoming leaders.
Donald Menzel states that building an organization with integrity requires leading with integrity. One should be able to perform a duty without fear and without favors. Integrity, as Menzel explains, is defined by sound moral character, being respectful, and wholesome. Menzel describes not only what guides integrity, but how to build an organization with integrity over the course of chapter 3 and 4. Menzel begins by defining integrity, how to show integrity, and what integrity looks like among employees, organizations, and professionals. He then discusses the 8 principles of ethical conduct and how managers must act in this manner to demonstrate and lead by example. After defining these terms, Menzel discusses different types of leadership and how to build on each type. Menzel continues, in chapter 4, to discuss tools that organizations can use to in order to build and maintain organizations that display integrity. As Menzel moves into chapter 5, he describes management across different cities and counties and discusses ethical issues that have presented and how each was managed. Menzel continues to use life experiences in these chapters to help demonstrate not only what can happen, but what can happen if the wrong choice is made.

Regardless of the career you choose in your life, whether it be an accountant or a Soldier in the United States Army, someone, somewhere most likely had an influence to bring you to that decision. The Army defines leadership as the process of influencing people by providing purpose, direction, and motivation while operating to accomplish the mission and improve the organization (JP, p. 1). Now imagine you are a young Private, in one of the most dangerous places in Iraq and you have constant leadership changes, and not much support from your direct leadership. I am sure at this point you can imagine, it is not the best scenario to be in. HBO’s series “Band Of Brothers” involves analysis of effective leadership and what qualities make for an effective leader. Despite having several similarities including serving in the same unit, holding leadership roles and suffering from some sort of trauma several of these leaders serve as foils for each other. By analyzing the differences between Captain Winters, Sergeant Lipton and Lieutenant Dike an argument can be made to decide what qualities make the most effective and ineffective leader. By looking at what the leader does, what the leader says and what others say about the leader the series determines what does and does not make a good leader in a military setting.

As an officer in the United States Army, it has been imperative for me to understand every facet of leadership and why it remains important to be an effective leader. During this course, I have learned some valuable lessons about myself as a leader and how I can improve on my leadership ability in the future. The journal entries along with the understanding of available leadership theories have been an integral part of my learning during this course. For all of the journals and assessments that I completed, I feel it has given me a good understanding of my current leadership status and my future potential as a leader. All of the specific assessments looked at several areas in regards to leadership; these assessments covered several separate focus areas and identified my overall strengths and weaknesses as a leader. Over the course of this paper I will briefly discuss each one of these assessments and journal entries as they pertained to me and my leadership.
They can be applied to anyone that serves in a leadership capacity. One such leader is U.S. Senator, Bernie Sanders. Senator Sanders embodies many of the same attributes and competencies as leaders in the U.S. Army. This paper will examine the impact Senator Sanders has made in community and United States and how these impacts contributed to my personal growth and development. Additionally, this paper will articulate how my leadership philosophy is based on that growth and development and the legacy I hope to leave on the US Army.
Being a good soldiers also required you to, follow the rules, follow orders, obey the code of conducts, look out for your fellow comrades, fulfill your duty requirement, being honest and fight for your country. In other words, a soldier must be committed. Committed to their work, the nation, the mission, their fellow servicemen and their unit. With these characteristics, a soldier can become successful.
My top five virtues that I strive to have are patience, compassion, honesty, self-discipline, and loyalty. I believe these traits make me a better leader and ultimately a better person. I try to set an example of a good person for my children and the Soldiers that I lead. I understand that we are not perfect but we should always aim to improve upon ourselves every day. Patience is not a virtue of mine and I struggle to control my emotions when my plans have gone awry. Compassion is a very important trait for leaders because everyone’s situation is different and holding everyone to the same standard is not fair to those individuals. As a commander we are given latitude when administering Uniform Code of Military (UCMJ) actions to subordinates. With this authority we need to consider all relevant issues and show compassion towards those
