BERNIE SANDERS, LEGACY LEADER
Opening Thesis and statement of purpose
There are many defining qualities of a great leader. ADP 6-22(2012) specifies these qualities in two the forms. The first is attributes, which encompass character, presence, and intellect (p. 6). The second is competencies, which are leads, develops, and achieves (p. 7). The applicability of these attributes and competencies are not exclusive to members of the Army, or the military. They can be applied to anyone that serves in a leadership capacity. One such leader is U.S. Senator, Bernie Sanders. Senator Sanders embodies many of the same attributes and competencies as leaders in the U.S. Army. This paper will examine the impact Senator Sanders has made in community and United States and how these impacts contributed to my personal growth and development. Additionally, this paper will articulate how my leadership philosophy is based on that growth and development and the legacy I hope to leave on the US Army.

Like Sanders, I also challenge the perceived norms of Army culture, questioning the ethics and processes while attempting to introduce new ideas and innovative methods to improve the organization. He however has been constituently challenged back from those who oppose his objectives. This couldn’t be any more apparent than his loss at the 2016 Democrat National Convention for the presidential nomination. Despite the challenges and failures, Sanders is extraordinarily resilient and never seems to give up on an issue. Achieving that same level of resiliency is something I am aspiring
In order to better understand my leadership philosophy, you must first understand who I am. I spent 8 years active duty in the Marine Corps. Afterwards, I did a multitude of different civilian jobs while pursuing my Bachelor of Science Degree in Organizational Management and Leadership from Friends University. I have been married for almost 20 years and have two awesome boys, ages 1 and 5. I think family is imperative in keeping Soldiers grounded and in a good state of mental health.
In deed on June 6, 1944, the little town of Bedford, VA, suffered a tragedy that would never be forgotten. But through the pain and hardship some of officers who leaded the Bedford boys displayed remarkable leadership’s principles. One of the basic functions of leadership is to unite people: bring people together to achieve common objectives. There is truth in the statement, where there is unity there is strength. This essay will offer a working definition of effective leadership principles and discuss the function of leadership as it relates to followers, motivation and power.
Colin Luther Powell was born in Harlem during the spring of 1937. Following a childhood and adolescence that was not particularly remarkable, Powell entered City College, in New York, where he found a niche in the Reserve Officers Training Corps. Then, after ascending to Cadet Colonel, the highest rank achievable in the corps, Powell graduated at the top of his class. His background as an underprivileged African-American makes him an intriguing military leader as he had to work hard, remain patient, and stare racism in the eyes on a daily basis. The beginning of Powell’s career was quite commonplace as he was not set up for success like some great leaders....
Bernie Sanders is running for President of the United States of America as a democratic candidate. His competition for the primary elections is Hillary Clinton, a well-known politician with plenty of experience under her belt. Bernie is running as a non-traditional candidate, which is a main factor of why his campaign is extremely successful and popular with the American people. A recent political ad released by Sander’s campaign team called “Real Change” emphasizes his family values and dedication to the working class, fighting for the votes of the average American. The ad implies Bernie is the right man for the job due to his long history of experience and commitment to the issues he believes in. This political ad illustrates how Bernie
Despite the tendency to treat West Point as if it is a world apart from the Army, the choices I make here and now form who I will be when it matters even more. Just as leadership lessons can be learned in a History of the Military Art class in an interdisciplinary manner, I need to focus on pulling as many lessons from my time at West Point so I can apply them when the stakes are potentially much higher. Simon Sinek’s idea and concepts of leadership are very similar to ones used by the Marine Corps. The Marines are one of the most successful military organizations around the world. They have achieved success by accomplishing missions and winning battles. Battles fought in difficult terrains, climates and circumstances. They have thrived in times when other military branches are better funded and equipped and never lost sight of their purpose and goal. Marines always seem to defy assumptions. They appear to have something special and different when compared to the other military branches. Extract young man and woman from a broad society filled with different cultural backgrounds and make them a Marine. Furthermore, they prepare these young individuals to fight for this country and give their life if necessary defending it. Marines have no problem standing out. The Marine Corps and Simon Sinek’s ideas and concepts for successful leadership are related because both know “why” they do what they do,
All soldiers, especially leaders, are highly recommended to keep a certain set of values that radiate throughout the entire U.S. Army. They are challenged to keep them near and dear to their hearts and to define and live them every day. A leader is one who takes these challenges serious and abides by
Donald Trump is a successful businessman who has accomplished more than most people could ever dream of. He started in the real estate business and has his own university, appeared on a T.V. show, is a billionaire, has many golf resorts, and is the president of the United States. He is criticized for many of his comments and political views. Some of these views are him wanting to build a wall to protect the United States from illegal immigrants and drugs, wanting to replace The Affordable Care Act, and banning people from Muslim countries to keep out terrorists. Although Donald Trump is often viewed as a controversial figure, he benefitted the United States of America by improving and creating jobs, proving that non-establishment politicians can still win the presidency, and by making America safer.

Leaders can have a powerful impact on the futures of many, and the way in which one approaches leadership is paramount to the type of impact one will have. In the following paper I will talk about leadership in our ever-changing world, explore my leadership practices, values and strengths as well as elaborate on the goals I have made to challenge myself as a leader.
To be a great orator, a visionary and a strategic thinker all make up a good leader, but by having all these traits doesn 't make up for the loss of the other things that a leader should have, like the ability to listen to his people 's need and the ability to think for the better of the nation instead of the power hungry attitude that ambition can led you
Some people were born to be great leaders and some were born to be great learners. I ask myself this question, “How was I created?” Was I born a leader or was I molded to lead. October 27th 2004 I raise my right hand in order to serve and protect the United State against all enemies, foreign and domestic. At this moment in my young personal leadership journey, I get my first glimpse of a leadership style, “shut up and listen.”
